Cole Anderson prevailed in a battle with his car owner Saturday night to win his fifth Pro Late Model race of the 52nd Annual World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing at New Smyrna Speedway.  Anderson took the lead from Mike Skinner on lap 9 and fended off all challenges to collect the win and the Florida Speedweeks championship.

“It felt good after those 35 laps battling with Mike Skinner there,” Anderson said on the FansChoice.TV broadcast.  “You get a little worked up inside but I can’t think everyone at ATF and Gunslinger enough; this is pretty incredible.  Five wins and a championship at Speedweeks, we’re pretty pumped up.”

Anderson and Skinner swapped paint while battling for the lead early in the race before the youngster pulled away from the veteran.  The Gunslinger kept the No. 97 within his sights but couldn’t make another bid for the lead.

300x250-51-network-2017“I can’t say too much but it was fun racing against him,” Anderson stated.  “We raced each other the hardest, that’s for sure.”

One night after trading a few blows in the Pro Late Model 100, Skinner was still proud of what his driver and team accomplished during the nine-day event.

“Well, he won.  Usually when you interviewed me, I was in victory lane,” Skinner told FansChoice.TV reporter Bob Dillner.  “He’s our young lion, I’m very proud of him with Dustin and the whole race team.  We won first and second with points, you can’t ask for much more than that.

“Cole is a hard-nosed little racer.  He’ll probably get his butt handed to him a couple times racing guys like that, but he got away with it again tonight.  I’m proud of him and he did a great job.  They got the championship and we got second with a 60-year-old fart.”

After seven races in nine days, Skinner plans to relax a little bit after an exciting week of racing.

“I’m going to go to the mountains and drink wine and play golf,” he said.  “(Ron) Hornaday and I used to battle like that and we’d go out and drink beer. I got so fat that I had to start drinking wine.”

Corey Heim, Jackson Boone and David Weaver rounded out the top five Saturday night.
