Yung Money Goes Wire-to-Wire for Second Straight Chili Bowl Triumph

Kyle Larson won 46 races on the dirt last year, including his breakthrough Chili Bowl Nationals win to kick off the year.  After a weeklong affair at the River Spirit Expo Center, “Yung Money” picked up where he left off in 2020 with his second consecutive Chili Bowl triumph in the 35th annual running of the event.

Larson led all 55 laps after getting a strong jump on the initial start from the outside front row, but the race was anything but dominant.  He had Friday night prelim winner Justin Grant hounding him for most of the race, and then he had a familiar foe on his tail tank in the final laps – Christopher Bell.

Two costly mistakes by Larson and a late yellow gave Bell an opportunity for a fourth win in the event in the final laps, but the Oklahoma driver made a mistake of his own, hitting the cushion and flipping out of the event.

Another strong restart on a green-white-checkered sealed the deal for Larson.

“I don’t think I’d call that dominating at all.  I had to work way harder for that one than last year’s,” Larson said on the MAVTV broadcast.  “I could feel Grant pressuring me pretty much the whole race.  There at the end it got a massive curb and I was trying to run it hard.  If I ran hard I’d slam it, if I ran it soft I’d get tight against it.  Once I saw Bell get to second I knew I had to try to be smarter and not make massive mistakes and let him by, which I had made massive mistakes there in that race.

“Thankfully, I was able to hold them all off and catch cautions at the right time.  I think if we were in traffic it could’ve been a totally different race but honestly at the same time, I wish we would’ve had traffic.  I felt like I could get through traffic better than if I was running by myself.”

Just like in 2020, Larson and crew chief Paul Silva won the biggest Midget event in the world in a self-owned King Chassis built in New Zealand.  It was a brand new car for the duo after they elected to park last year’s Chili Bowl-winning machine.”

“We would have liked to race this more often, we didn’t get to race it more often.  We had two nights at Merced and then we came here.  I feel like we didn’t come here as strong as we were here in the feature last year.  Last year, we got to race a lot more on the West coast.”

Bell’s late-race tumble gave polesitter Justin Grant another shot at Larson and the Golden Driller.  The first green-white-checkered saw the reigning USAC Silver Crown champion throw a slidejob that just missed, stacking up the field behind him.  He was then caught sleeping on the final restart, dashing his chances at victory.

He would finish runner-up in his first start with RMS Racing, his best career finish in the Chili Bowl.

“In the early going I thought we had a little bit better race car and we were dogging him pretty hard.  I was trying to get the top worked in and hoped I could sneak by him before he moved up,” Grant said.  “He moved up in time and when he got ledgy, he was better on the ledge and he opened it up.

“The curb was getting pretty gnarly and we were struggling with it as well.  I kept getting tight, bicycling, and I tried getting him on one of those restarts and didn’t have enough to clear him, I got alongside of him and when I hit the curb I had a big bike.  We were trying as hard as we could there.”

Tanner Thorson also earned his best career finish in the event with a third-place run.  Monday night prelim winner Cannon McIntosh and former World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series champion Daryn Pittman rounded out the top-five.
