Young Gun Beats Two of the Best at Montgomery

Show Me the Money Series Pro Late Models invaded Montgomery Speedway Saturday night for the Mid-Summer Clash 100, the second half of their weekend doubleheader with Five Flags Speedway. After a late-race restart it was young Colby Howard driving the Anthony Campi Racing No. 81 into victory lane ahead of veterans Bubba Pollard and Augie Grill.

“It’s something I’m speechless about,” Howard told Speed51. “I really don’t know what to say about it. I think that’s something everybody wants to do in their career. Especially for me coming up and this is only my fifth Pro Late Model start. To beat Bubba Pollard like that and outdoing him on the restart was pretty amazing.”

To set himself up for the win, Howard had to overcome a late-race incident involving Casey Roderick and Connor Okrzesik, which at one point had Howard’s car parked up against the turn one fence.

“I don’t know, we just went three wide and started spinning,” Howard stated. “I thought the damage was a lot more. I feel like I hit Connor a lot more than what we all thought we did, but we backed it down pit road and we made a few adjustments and I don’t know how they did it but they did it right and made it a rocket.”

Bubba Pollard ended up second on the night, one spot short of his finishing position the night prior at Five Flags Speedway.

“Just got beat,” Pollard said. “That’s what it came down to. We weren’t good there at the end like we should and that’s just part of it you know. It was a good race. Me and Augie had us a good race going there and the 81 (Howard) drove past us like we were sitting still. So yeah, we got beat.”

Following the race, Pollard filed a protest against the ignition box on the Anthony Campi Racing No. 81 Pro Late Model.  Speed51 will have more on that story as it develops.

Augie Grill held his own for the first two-thirds of the race but faded late to come home third.

“I just need to be a little bit better,” Grill said. “I thought we were going to have a little bit more for them there at the end. But I just got the right front a little bit too hot there at the end. It started moving up in the center and then I was loose off. Hats off to them guys, they got their stuff together right now. So, we’ll just have to work at it a little harder. We’re a lot closer than we were last night. So we’ll take that and build on it.”
