Cody Coughlin entered Winchester Speedway with a win at the fast half-mile already under his belt. That win came in 2014, and he started first and led every single lap on his way to the win.
On Monday, Coughlin left Winchester Speedway as a two-time winner, but this one was much harder for the ARCA/CRA Super Series points leader.
Coughlin set fast time on Saturday, but started sixth after the invert. He quickly moved into the top three, but stayed put in third for much of the race. There were even a few occasions when Coughlin found himself in fourth after losing a spot on the restart. But even when Coughlin would lose a spot, he was never out of contention.
After a couple of big wrecks and solo spins for some of the other drivers, Coughlin restarted in second with 32 laps to go. Dalton Sargeant, who had led almost every lap prior to that point, had control of the restart.
Sargeant, seeking his first Super Late Model win, took the outside lane for the restart, which is normally the preferred groove. That put Coughlin on the inside, where he had been much of the race.
On previous restarts, Coughlin would drop a spot when restart on the bottom. On this restart that didn’t happen. Not only did Coughlin not lose a spot, but he was able to get a good enough jump to hang right with Sargeant into turn one.
The two drivers made a bit of contact in turn two, but both kept control of their machines and drove away, now with Coughlin in the lead.
After that, it was all Coughlin for the fourth time this year in ARCA/CRA Super Series competition. Coughlin had one more restart to deal with, but he drove away from the field with ease to win by close to a straightaway.
“I came in here just wanting to win,” Coughlin said after the race. “I didn’t care about the points situation. I just wanted to win. This was a lot tougher than the first time I won here when we started first, finished first and led every lap, but we got the job done again and it’s awesome.”
Coughlin entered Monday’s race with a 13-point lead over Dalton Armstrong who rallied from a spin to finish fourth behind Coughlin.
Now just two races remain for the ARCA/CRA Super Series, and Coughlin is closing in even closer on the championship. One of those final two races will come right here at Winchester again, but with 300 more laps.
“I know we’ll be good at the 400,” Coughlin said. “I really want to win that one. That would probably mean more than the championship because that’s such a special race. But I’m feeling really good about the championship because I know we can win the Winchester 400 and I know we’ll run well at Lucas Oil Raceway as well. We just need to keep doing what we’ve been doing.”
