Parker Retzlaff came into Monday night’s Rowdy Energy Super Select Series race at the Milwaukee Mile second in points, having yet to win in the season. Both of those stats changed after 75 laps, with the Wisconsin driver winning his first race and taking the points lead from Alex McCollum in his home state.
The ARCA Menards Series East regular led 39 of the 75 laps at the famed mile and walked away from the field as several other drivers raced nose-to-tail for second on back. With just one yellow bunching the field up in the duration of the race, Retzlaff was untouchable during the run to the checkered.”
“I could see for a while there it was a bit of a mess from second to sixth and I was just trying to get away from it. I was really hoping we wouldn’t get a yellow and back the pace,” Retzlaff said on the broadcast. “I just got it done, finally.”
“I was trying to get to the lead but my spotter Jacob Heafner was keeping me calm and telling me to back the pace so I would have some tire left. I backed it up a little bit and I was saving, and it worked out really well for us.”
Retzlaff’s win Monday night gave him the points lead going into the Rowdy Series finale after Alex McCollum was hit with a pass-through penalty around lap 50 after contact sent Max Cookson around while racing in the top-five. McCollum would finish 16th after the incident.
After having come close in just about every race so far, Retzlaff picked as good of a time as ever to break through for his first win.
“I’ve had some really bad luck and with so much competition in this league, it’s been really hard to finally get a win. I finally did it tonight.”
Lucas Oil Raceway winner Kaden Honeycutt made a late charge through the top-five to earn the runner-up spot at the end of the race, his best finish since his win at the beginning of April. He admitted passing at the Mile was hard to come by, but he saved just enough to make a run in the final laps.
“I was just saving my tires pretty early, I was trying to be patient,” Honeycutt said. “I got my track position a little bit early and I was just settling in, trying to save tires and knowing it would come into play at some point.”
“It was very tough track to pass on, I’ll be very honest. It was really hard not to divebomb somebody or run into the back of their bumper. You had to be really patient and I was giving and taking throughout the whole race. In that last part of the race it was time to go, so it was all take from there.”
Treyten Lapcevich finished a season-best third, followed by Devon Morgan, who had started the race 31st after a miscue during his heat race. Josh Berry rounded out the top-five, fresh off his Twin-51s sweep at Hickory Motor Speedway over the weekend.
