Bakersfield, CA – The February 28th Winter Showdown at Kern County Raceway Park is already one of the nation’s richest short-track events, but today the event’s prize list increased again with the addition of a $2,000 cash award to the event’s fast qualifier and a $2,000 award to the first driver who doesn’t make the cut in the Winter Showdown Last Chance Qualifier.
With ten laps to go in the Winter Showdown Last Chance Qualifier, the yellow flag will be displayed and the top three cars in the transfer positions will leave the track to get ready for the Winter Showdown 250. The cars left on the track will then race for the LCQ win and $2,000.
“We’ve received great support from the Bakersfield community for the Winter Showdown,” stated the SRL’s Larry Collins, who with his SPEARS Southwest Tour Series staff promotes the event. “Bakersfield has a deep history in motorsports, and to bring an event of this size to our community means a lot to Bakersfield and Kern County.”
With the addition of the Fast Time Award and additional cash prize for the first driver that doesn’t make the Winter Showdown 250 field, the total cash payout, including bonuses for the race weekend will exceed a record $180,000 in prize money.
“The big prize list is just a piece of what makes this event so great,” Collins added. “We strive to make it enjoyable for the race teams, many of which will have traveled 2,000 miles or more to be part of the Winter Showdown. The race fans get a chance to see the best short track drivers in North America compete at one of the finest short tracks in America.”
Last year, Bakersfield’s Derek Thorn topped the list of 67 entries to claim the pole for the inaugural Winter Showdown 250, with a time of 17.22 seconds, at 104.5 average MPH. Eventual race winner, Bubba Pollard from Senoia, Georgia, was second fastest in qualifying and Boca Raton, Florida’s Dalton Sargeant was third.
The 2016 Winter Showdown weekend will be headlined by the Sunday, February 28th $30,000 to win “Winter Showdown 250” for Super Late Model stock cars. Sunday will also feature the Last Chance Qualifier. Saturday, February 27th will feature; Super Late Model qualifying and qualifying races, along with a full program of the Lucas Oil Modified Series, featuring an 80 lap main event.
