Mike Marlar resembled a little more of Evel Knievel at Richmond Raceway in Kentucky this past weekend then the Dirt Late Model star he is.
Marlar put his infamous number-157 up on two wheels in qualifying on Friday and then dominated the Butterball Memorial to score his fourth win in the event and a big $20,059 payday.
Entering turn three before taking the green for his run, Marlar hit a rut in the cushion and got up on two wheels. Yes, he “biked it” as the young kids would say.
Amazingly, he was able to save his car from flipping or taking any damage, even after spending time completely on his side in the process.
“I’ve flipped over a few times and when you flip, imagine somebody put you in a cage and rolled you down a hill. You see ground sky, ground sky until it stops,” explained Marlar on Monday during “The Bullring” on Speed51.TV. “I saw sky and ground and then the next thing I know I was headed toward the flagstand and everything was working and I was about to take the green. I was like I can’t believe it came down from that, but it did.”
Marlar would avenge his near disaster and win the Butterball Memorial, but when he returned to the pits after qualifying, his crew was joking about the incident.
“They were giving me a hard time about that and the Joie Chitwood Thrill Show. These things are really fast and right-side stuck all the time. I hit that cushion just a little raw and on the gas a little too hard and up she came. It was a scary millisecond there.”
Even as he sat in his office Monday morning, he still was left amazed with his save.
“I’ve seen some pictures, I haven’t actually seen the video yet. I don’t know if I have a whole lot to say about it other than you did a good job saving this. You cut right, steer into it and hope for the best. It came down but I honestly don’t know how much I had to do with helping it.”
