The opening night of the 53rd Annual Snowball Derby ended in wild fashion with the Pure Stocks taking to the half-mile for their feature event. The 35-lapper saw plenty of comers and goers, as well as its fair share of yellow flags to mix everything even more.
Reigning Pure Stock track champion Daryl McDonald III emerged from the chaos to score to win to cap off the season for the class. Even in victory, the Theodore, AL native had to fight back from mid-race struggles. He fell back on several early restarts before climbing back to second on a green flag run and hitting his marks on the final restart with less than ten to go to run away with the lead.
The triumph also marked his last race in the Pure Stock class.
“Man, this is a dream come true. It’s my last race in Pure Stocks before I move up to Sportsmen,” McDonald said on the Speed51.TV broadcast. “What an awesome race, thanks to all my guys for getting my car ready.”
Caleb Burkett led the most laps during the race, but lost the lead during the final restart and nearly fell victim to the chaos himself before finishing second. The former Pure Stock Snowball Derby winner ultimately took the blame for himself for how the final restart transpired.
“There was a little miscommunication on my part, I take full responsibility on that. I thought I was second, I didn’t know I was the leader,” Burkett said. “I kind of gave it away. It was wild but when you get down to these races with three or four to go, it’s going to get wild.”
There were many heated tempers following the conclusion of Thursday night’s feature. Chance Imel was one of those drivers, expressing his take on an incident that ended his night just after the halfway point of the race.
“We dove off into the corner and I got turned sideways. I gave Michael Moody plenty of room earlier in the race and he just jacked me up,” Imel said. “I don’t know, we’ve been friends for a long time and I didn’t expect that. We’ll talk about it.”
