The beginning of the 2020 winter season for the Speed51 Western Super Series presented by J2Racing.parts brought an exciting 80 laps and a first-time winner at Iowa Speedway on Tuesday night.
Early drama in the event included two winners from the past season. Jake Watson was collected in an accident early, ending his day. Max Cookson who came on strong at the end of the previous season was also involved in an early wreck, putting him several laps down.
With several long green flag runs to follow, tire conservation became a huge factor. In the end, it was Thomas Axsom capturing the win with a rally coming from 10th in his series debut.
“I fell back and was a little discouraged at first, but I just felt really fast and you saw it. It felt good,” Axsom said after the race.
Alex McCollum crossed under the checkered flag in second and was very humble afterwards, giving praise to the winner.
“Congrats to Axsom, he deserves it. With the invert, we started eighth and it was just really hard to pass. I was too tight off of restarts, the car was better on the longer run.”
Steven Mastro started the race from the pole and finished third, but admitted that he used up his stuff early on with the exciting green flag battle.
“It was a killer race battling it out up there. I might’ve burnt my tires up at the beginning of the race trying to hold those fast guys off. It was the hardest third I’ve ever had to work for”
