The stars aligned for Preston Peltier Saturday night at Evergreen Speedway as he dominated the practice charts, topped the board in qualifying and won his 25-lap heat race. The two-time defending winner of the $25,000-to-win Summer Showdown rolled into Monroe, Washington with a bad fast race car, but if you ask him, that’s not what he wants to be known for.
“Really being the fastest car here doesn’t mean anything,” Peltier told Speed51. “Most of the time when we’re the fastest car something happens, so to me I’d rather be quietly in the top five and have a really good race car, and at the end of the deal take the checkered flag. So we’ll just have to se how this goes. We really have a good car. This Rowdy machine is just incredible, so hopefully we’ll be in the kind of position we need to be in (Sunday) night and maybe we’ll get another checkered flag.”
Derek Thorn has also shown impressive speed throughout the weekend, qualifying second earlier in the day and winning his 25-lap heat race to put himself on the outside of the front row to start Sunday’s.
If you ask the Bakersfield, California native, showing speed is one thing but the goal remains the same: continue to test and dial in his No. 43 Super Late Model for Sunday’s race.
“You just put 25 laps on your tires so the goal was to try not to burn our stuff down, but at the same time use it as a test session, and that’s what we were trying to use it for,” Thorn told Speed51 after his heat win. “We made a couple changes before to try to get good feedback for (Crew Chief) Mike (Keen) and hopefully we can get this Campbell Motorsports No. 43 dialed in for tomorrow night.”
