Today, South Boston Speedway is known as a hotbed for Late Model Stock Car racing, often playing a role in determining who wins the NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series National Championship each year. However, the track also has a strong history of Modified racing.
Names like Ray Hendrick, Johnny Roberts and Eddie Crouse were frequent winners during South Boston’s formative years in the 50s and 60s. The track was also a stop for the original SMART Modified Tour, with Frank Fleming, Jerry Marquis and Gary Myers winning races.
