Super Late Model racers making their way to Cordele, Georgia on Saturday, June 4 for the Southern Super Series presented by Sunoco event will be racing for a unique trophy.  Crisp Motorsports Park General Manager Scott Sumner recently announced that the winner of the race will take home the Marvin Ragan Memorial Cup.

The Marvin Ragan Memorial Cup, designed by George Bridges at The Trophy Company in Albany, Georgia,  will be solid crystal on a solid black marble base.  The crystal cup is approximately 15” tall with an 11” diameter.  In addition to being a beautiful and unique trophy, the cup will also hold a seedless watermelon grown in Crisp County.

pfc-anim1“This year the winner of the Southern Super Series ‘Four Star Freightliner 125’ will be awarded the Marvin Ragan Memorial Cup as an honor and a reminder of everything this man did for the racing world,” said Sumner.  “It’s going to be an honor for us at Crisp Motorsports Park to present this trophy to this year’s winner. Along with the Marvin Ragan Memorial Cup, we will start the tradition of giving the winner a Watermelon grown right here in Crisp County, the Watermelon Capital of the world.”

This year’s Southern Super Series race at Crisp Motorsports Park will be the inaugural Marvin Ragan Memorial at the track.  Sumner has fond memories of how great a man that the late Ragan was and wanted to honor him by holding a race in his honor.

“Marvin was a great man, well known throughout the world of motorsports,” he said.  “I remember when I was very young and my family owned the facility, Marvin and Ken would send their wrecker from the dealership to provide wrecker service for the speedway. Marvin would show up every Saturday and drive it himself, just because he wanted to be at the racetrack.

“He loved racing and anything to do with it, especially seeing the up and coming drivers develop and move up in the ranks. He took great pride in that. Marvin took over the speedway several years before he passed just because he did not want to see it closed and to give the youth in the area an outlet or an activity that could have a positive impact on their lives.”

A stout list of Super Late Model competitors from the Southeast are expected to enter the Marvin Ragan Memorial.  Many of those racers will be chasing the recently announced “Tri-State Bonus Bucks,” a program that will award one driver an extra $1,000.  The winner of the bonus will be the driver who records the best average finish in the three Southern Super Series events at Five Flags Speedway (FL), Mobile International Speedway (AL) and Crisp Motorsports Park (GA).

Current points leader Donnie Wilson, Georgia’s Bubba Pollard and North Carolina racer Kyle Grissom are among the drivers expected to enter the event.
