Dan Angelicchio started his rookie season with the ULTIMATE Northeast Super Late Model Series with a top-five finish at Roaring Knob Motorsports Complex (PA) on June 13. Angelicchio and the ULTIMATE Northeast drivers return to Roaring Knob this Sunday, where the Greensburg, Pennsylvania racer hopes to score another strong run.
Angelicchio is optimistic entering the weekend, going back to a track where he finished fifth in the series’ season opener. While the finish was a strong one, Angelicchio found some areas to improve his race car following that event, and is eager to see how much of a difference those changes make.
“I feel good going into the weekend. Last time we were up there for the first race, we were okay, we ran top-five. I found a bunch of things that were not right with the car since then. I’m excited to get back there and see what we have.”
It has been difficult to find track time to work out the bugs or make adjustments during a year where many events have been postponed or cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Angelicchio had only competed in one event prior to the ULTIMATE Northeast opener, a weekly event also at Roaring Knob.
“I went up there the weekend before, just to be honest. That was it. I’ve been out three weekends now. It’s tough not racing as much now.”
Angelicchio also made the trip to Lernerville Speedway last weekend for the World of Outlaws Late Model Series’ Firecracker 100, but struggled against the national touring stars who have been competing more frequently throughout the year.
“We went to the Firecracker 100 last weekend. It’s tough when you don’t have that seat time you’re used to having at this point in the year.”
Still, Angelicchio is confident he can compete for ULTIMATE Northeast’s Rookie of the Year honors. While he has Super Late Model experience, including two ULTIMATE Northeast starts in 2019, he is excited to try his hand at following a Super Late Model tour full-time after experience touring in Pro Late Models in the past.
“As long as we have no major catastrophes, we’re running for Rookie of the Year this year. I ran a lot of the races to begin with. It just fit our schedule this year. It’s changed a little bit since they’ve added some races, but it fits us. I’ve never really run a Super series. I’ve run a lot of the Crate stuff, like FASTRAK and whatnot, but I had never run a Super series and we figured we’d give it a shot.”
This weekend, Angelicchio believes he can compete for a podium finish in the return to Roaring Knob.
“Obviously, we’ll go there to win, but if we can get a top-three, that’s our goal going into it.”
