ULTIMATE Northeast Rookie Rolls to Second Straight Win

Earlier this month, ULTIMATE Northeast Super Late Model Series rookie Dan Angelicchio scored his first win with the series at Roaring Knob Motorsports Park (PA).  Angelicchio doubled down on Saturday night, dominating the Summer Sizzler 30 at Greater Cumberland Raceway (MD) for a second straight win in ULTIMATE Northeast.

Angelicchio jumped out to an early lead in the 30-lap feature event, setting a blistering pace while other contenders battled behind him.  The pace only slowed once, as Darras Deneen slowed to a stop in turn four just shy of the halfway mark.

Despite that, Angelicchio quickly re-established his advantage, pulling away to a convincing victory.  It was the Pennsylvania racer’s first trip to Greater Cumberland, but he proved to be a quick study.

“The car is just phenomenal right now,” said Angelicchio.  “We started the night pretty bad, but I just kept telling the guys it was me.  I had to find my line around this place.  Once I did, we were alright.

“I just had to get comfortable with this car and figure out how to drive this place.  It’s different from most places. I never saw the place, so I didn’t know what to expect.  We left the car the same after we left Roaring Knob, because we were pretty good that night.  We’re on a roll right now, so hopefully we can keep it going.”

Two-time series champion Jared Miley finished second in the event, outdueling Max Blair in the closing laps to secure a runner-up finish and maintain a two-point advantage over Angelicchio in this year’s title hunt.

“Our car was good.  It was just missing, the carburetor would flutter real bad,” Miley said.  “One lap it almost shut off in the corner.  On that restart, it went well.  I just wish it had ran right.  I think we’d be having our picture taken.  He did a good job, too, so we’re happy with a second.”

Blair wondered if he could have chased down Angelicchio if the race had gone 30 laps caution free, but ultimately settled for a third-place finish.

“I think if that yellow didn’t come out, we were going to be able to make a good race out of it.  It would have been fun, anyways.  Once I got by Jared, I would run him down a little bit.  That’s a couple of nights in a row cautions just killed us.  He checked out at the end of the race, they were real good.”
