In recent years, the NASCAR Cup Series’ Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway (SC) has added to its fan allure by becoming a signature throwback race. The ULTIMATE Super Late Model Series hopes to bring that same excitement to Lake View Motor Speedway (SC) with a throwback race, Dirt Late Model style.
The ULTIMATE Southeast’s date at Lake View Motor Speedway on Thursday, September 3 will now be a throwback race in conjunction with the Southern 500 Cup race. It will be an opportunity for Dirt Late Model racers to celebrate auto racing history in their own way in front of fans already in the area for the NASCAR weekend.
“We’re doing it in conjunction with the Darlington throwback weekend,” said Kelley Carlton, ULTIMATE Southeast Race Director. “The NASCAR track being just down the road from Lake View. It’s on a Thursday night, so we’re hoping we can pull in those folks who are pulling into Darlington for the NASCAR race.”
Racers will be encouraged to show up with throwback schemes, which could represent either NASCAR stars of days gone by or Dirt Late Model legends.
“We decided we would do a throwback deal, do the same thing they are doing. We’re going to offer our competitors the opportunity to decide if they want to do a throwback to an old NASCAR scheme or an old Dirt Late Model scheme. We’re working on putting together a prize for Best Appearing or Fan Favorite car. It may be a Best Appearing award decided by fan vote.”
Carlton is excited for the event to take place at Lake View, which joined the ULTIMATE schedule in 2019 as part of the venue’s rejuvenation under Scott Tripp.
“I think it’s going to be pretty neat. Scott has always been a great guy to work with. He’s excited about it. They did some PR for the event all the way back at the last Darlington race. Not so much the throwback aspect, but the announcement of the race was made back then. We’re just growing some things, adding to it and trying to make it a really big event. This will give drivers plenty of time to think about it, get with their wrap people and come up with some really good ideas.
“Scott and his whole staff were on fire for the program when we came this year. When we talk about this, you can hear the excitement in his voice. We learned some stuff from going this year, track prep and such, and we really think we’ll have a jam-up event.”
