ULTIMATE Champion Makes it Back-to-Back at Friendship

There was no photo-finish like last weekend at Lancaster Motor Speedway (SC), but the result was the same with the ULTIMATE Super Late Models on Saturday at Friendship Motor Speedway (NC).  Two-time and defending series champion Zack Mitchell picked up his second straight win with the series, dominating at the Elgin, North Carolina facility.

Early in the race, Mitchell held off challenges from fellow Southeastern Dirt Late Model standout Ross Bailes.  However, Mitchell pulled away during a long green-flag run to close out the night to secure the win.

“Everything was flawless tonight,” said Mitchell in victory lane.  “Barry Wright Race Car, Clements (Racing Engines) horsepower, everything was great.  I can’t thank all my help enough.  They stand behind us and I think we’re just getting better and better, the more races we run.”

In the opening laps, Mitchell duked it out with Bailes, leaving the champion to question his lane choice to start the 40-lap feature.

“I really didn’t know after choosing that bottom.  Ross got a heck of a run on me.  We raced side-by-side for a couple of laps. Ross is a hell of a driver.  He races hard, but he’s clean.  I appreciate him racing me clean.”

The turning point of the race came as the two drivers approached backmarkers during the opening stint of the race.  Bailes made contact with Chris Blackwell while attempting to pass him, sending Blackwell spinning and wrinkling a fender on Bailes’ car.

“I was hoping to get another one, but we got to lapped traffic.  That first time I got to a car, it killed me.  I could keep up with him before, but after that I was just hanging on.”

As minimal as the damage appeared to be for Bailes, it was enough to prevent him from keeping pace with Mitchell for the remainder of the evening.

“I feel like I was as good as he was, but after that happened I didn’t have anything for him.  He did a good job, he ran a good race, got through lapped traffic, did what he had to do.”

G.R. Smith, in a backup car after damaging his primary entry last week at Lancaster, finished third.  Cla Knight finished fourth, with Pearson Lee Williams rounding out the top five.
