So what caused Benny Gordon's issue in the closing laps? A broken tie rod. Gordon told 51 after the race that he felt the suspension piece begin to break with 50 laps to go. It slowly worked itself looser and looser until the outer tie rod piece finally gave way with just two laps to go. Gordon was understandably dejected after the race but was also encouraged by the run his team had tonight and it looks as though we'll see Gordon back with the Pro Cup guys soon enough.

Caleb Holman after his second place finish:

"There was nothing else I could do [on that last restart]. My only prayer was to get him in that first corner there. We kicked it into fourth gear and my car [the tires] spun a little. It's hard, but it'll feel a whole let better in the morning finishing second."

10:05
Tonight's victory marks Morgan's first triumph at Motor Mile, a track he counts among his favorites.
10:05
J.P. in Victory Lane:

"In the first run, I just felt him [Gordon] out a little bit. And his car did the same thing [pushing bad late in a run]. I knew that if I just waited my time and waited my time, I could get him. I raced Caleb there a really long time and it was a lot of fun, but I thought we might have missed our chance. But when I got there [to second] and I saw the intervals shrinking, I knew we had a chance."

9:41
We will have our first attempt at a green-white-checkered coming up.
9:39
Looks like the left front tire will be changed on Benny Gordon.
9:38
Gordon kept it out of the wall and will hit the pits.

Your new running order:

1 Morgan
2 Holman
3 Hopkins
4 Craig
5 Rohrbaugh
6 Gordon (pitting)

9:37
YELLOW FLAG - Lap 248: Morgan inherits the lead as Gordon slows to a crawl on the track.
9:37
Lap 248: Gordon sliding up the track. He has had a tire go down.
9:37
Lap 247: Morgan IS going to make this interesting. He is there.
9:36
Lap 245: Five to go. 2008 champ Benny Gordon leads 2012 champ J.P. Morgan. It will come down to those two.
9:36
Lap 243: Morgan is making a late charge at it. We don't think he'll get there in time even at this closing rate, but he's going to make it interesting.
9:34
Lap 240: Ten to go for Benny Gordon.
9:34
Lap 238; And for new second place man Morgan, it seems to be too little too late aas well. Gordon maintains a commanding lead.
9:34
Lap 237: Holman uses the outside line to scoot past Hopkins finally for third. Gordon is long gone though.
9:33
Lap 235: Gordon leads Morgan, Hopkins, Holman, Craig, and Rohrbaugh.
9:33
Lap 233: Now Morgan has found his way under Holman. He in fact will power under and by Hopkins for second.

9:32
Lap 230: Benny Gordon has just twenty laps to go to claim his first Pro Cup victory since winning at Bristol in 2010
9:32
Lap 227: Morgan getting really antsy too. Essentially the second through fourth place cars are converging as they run slightly different grooves. Hopkins runs the highest groove, Holman runs the middle, and Morgan runs the low line.
9:31
Lap 225: Twenty five to go. Holman continues to work the low line as he wants around Hopkins. But Hopkins keeps it wound up and Holman has to settle behind him down the straightaway before trying it again in the next set of turns.
9:30
Lap 223: That high line seems to have worked magic for Gordon. He is now two-tenths of a second faster than his pursuers.
9:30
Lap 220: Gordon now searching for a groove. Give him a lead around one second as second through fourth remain glued together.
9:29
Lap 218: Hopkins coming in a hurry. We have a real dogfight as we approach 30 to go.
9:28
Lap 216: Boswell pits. Top-four are closing up even more.
9:27
Lap 215: Black flag for Boswell.
9:27
Lap 213: In fact, Boswell is now trailing rear end smoke.
9:27
Lap 212: Boswell fading late this run, as Rohrbaugh is by for 6th. Boswell is now the last car on the track in 7th.
9:26
Lap 210 of 250: Gordon leads by a second and a half, but that margin is shrinking and three cars are lined up right behind him - Hopkins, Holman, and Morgan.
9:26
Lap 209: Both Hopkins and Holman, either as they are battling, are closing in on Gordon pretty quickly.
9:25

Lap 205: Hopkins is holding tough on that outside as Holman is beginning to work corner bottom under him looking for a run.
9:23
Lap 200 of 250:

1 Benny Gordon
2 Dalton Hopkins
3 Caleb Holman
4 J.P. Morgan
5 Matt Craig
6 Brady Boswell
7 Codie Rohrbaugh

9:23
Lap 198: Holman looks like he has decided it is go time. He has picked up the pace and he is reeling in Hopkins in a hurry. Morgan not much further back either.
9:21
Lap 194: Benny Gordon is on cruise control. Looking like he may lead well over 200 laps tonight.
9:20
Lap 188: Hopkins really exploring that high line, maybe the highest anyone has run tonight. He's not gaining ground on Gordon with that line, but he's not really losing ground either.
9:19
Lap 187: Now Morgan is by Boswell for fourth.
9:19
Lap 185: Holman dives under Boswell and takes third.
9:18
Lap 184: Boswell has slipped back to Holman and Morgan.
9:18
Lap 180: Hopkins has gotten away from Boswell and in fact has cut off two or three carlengths of Gordon's lead in the last four laps.
9:17
Lap 176: Nice to see the remaining seven cars fairly evenly matched at this point. Rohrbaugh is only half a lap back as he is the caboose on this train.
9:16
Lap 175 of 250: Gordon isn't quite checking out yet, as Hopkins remains ten carlengths back with Boswell closing.
9:15

Lap 169: Benny Gordon is making just his second start since 2010. His return at Memphis was not as glorious as he hoped, struggling to a fifth place finish. But the team came here yesterday and thrashed on the car all day long. It looks like they are back in the ball game here today.
9:13
Lap 162: Hopkins starting to slide back to Boswell now. Boswell has halved that gap in the last five laps.
9:11
Lap 155: Gordon's lead has slowly but surely expanded. Give him eight carlengths now on Hopkins. Another eight back to Boswell and a similar gap back to Holman and Morgan.
9:09
Lap 150: One hundred to go.
9:09
Lap 149: Interesting to note that, like the first run, Gordon has started off as a bottom feeder, running the lowest groove on the track. But as the run wore on last time, he was one of the few cars to really work the high groove. We'll see if that holds true on this run to the checkered.
9:08
Lap 145:

1 Benny Gordon
2 Dalton Hopkins
3 Brady Boswell
4 Caleb Holman
5 J.P. Morgan
6 Matt Craig
7 Codie Rohrbaugh

9:07
Lap 145: Boswell starting to get some breathing room on Holman, who now seems to be really struggling corner exit.

Lap 140 of 250: Hopkins has closed to Gordon's rear decklid as the field is bottlenecked behind them at third.
9:05
Lap 136: The top two have separated themselves from Boswell, who has a mirror full of Holman and Morgan.
9:04
Lap 134: Hopkins keeping Gordon within his crosshairs, as he rides two carlengths back.
9:04
Lap 132: Craig noses ahead for this lap and then clears Rohrbaugh down the backstretch.
9:03
Lap 131: Craig and Rohrbaugh threatening to sychronize spin the way they are leaning on each other.
9:03
Lap 129: Hopkins settles into second. Boswell, Holman, and Morgan the rest of your top-five. Craig and Rohrbaugh going at it hard for sixth.
9:02
Lap 127: Hopkins holding onto second for now but Boswell is not giving up. Holman behind them both trying to pick a line.
9:02
GREEN FLAG: Gordon clears Hopkins easily and leaves Boswell to fight Hopkins for second.

Pro Cup cars rolling out now for their tire scuff.
6:17
One driver who is looking to break a hex he has here at Motor Mile is Caleb Holman. From nearby Abingdon, Holman considers this one of this home tracks. But he has never won here. In fact, his record has been miserable, littered by DNFs at this facility.
8 starts with just one top-ten finish, a 2nd back here in 2011.
His average finish is just 16.5
He told 51 his crew tested here two weeks ago and was very happy with the car. He was fastest in first practice and looks to be one of the cars to beat tonight.
6:13
Next up is the X-1R Pro Cup Series qualifying tire scuff session before they qualify at the bottom of the hour.

One of the cool things about Motor Mile is that there is a long sweeping dragstretch that runs parallel to the back straightaway. Boswell, after testing last night, checked out the drag strip and said he had a good time. In fact, the drag strip is semi-active today as we've seen cars roll down a few times already in the hour and a half we've been at track.

Brady Boswell is getting ready to roll for practice in fifteen minutes. He and his team practiced yesterday and worked primarily on dialing in the car for the lower track temperatures the clouds are offering for tonight. Last year's ROTY, Boswell said the car itself hasn't changed that much from last year in terms of handling, but the American Racer tires the X-1R Pro Cup teams switched to this year have gained three tenths of a second.
