SPEEDWEEKS TIME CAPSULE: Throughout New Smyrna Speedweeks, Speed51 will take a look back at some of the history of this event with our partner site, 51’s Third Turn (thethirdturn.com). Some of short track racing’s best have been able to claim the title of World Series champions while others yet really broke into the national scene thanks to this event.

Mark Martin may be known by many as the greatest NASCAR driver to never win a Cup championship, but he’s a multi-time champion of the short track ranks. That all started in the late 1970s, when the Arkansas driver trekked down to New Smyrna and captured the 1978 World Series Late Model title. Driving his distinctive #2 orange and blue late model, Martin went toe to toe with Mike Eddy, Bob Senneker, and ultimately Dick Trickle to claim the crown that season. Martin prevailed by a scant nine points to claim his only Speedweeks title.

It was only the beginning of a wonderful racing career for Martin. He would go on to win his first ASA Racing Series title in 1978 and then followed up that up with three more ASA crowns (’79, ’80, and ’86) along with victories in the ARTGO Challenge Series, Rockford National Short Track Championships, Slinger Nationals, and ARCA. Even though Martin ultimately decided to focus on big-league NASCAR in 1988 and rarely ran short track events after that, he reads Speed51 and is one of the most enthusiastic people in the garage to talk to about what is happening in the short track ranks. You can view all of his short track stats on 51’s Third Turn:http://www.thethirdturn.com/wiki/Mark_Martin_(AR)

Martin prevailed by a scant nine points to earn his only Speedweeks title.

The track has seen much needed improvements over the last 3 years including new lights, new walls, and a new configuration for 2013. The Mini Outlaw karts put on an amazing show with 2 and 3 wide racing throughout the field. Millbridge Speedway is only open on select Wednesday nights for racing. This enables people who travel or race at other venues on the weekends to race with us and has a good time during the week. Click here for more information.

We spoke to several drivers after the K&N Pro Series East Test Session and this is what they had to say.

Brandon Gdovic: "We are still looking for more. I think the right setup will be a long run car. We have to run the race on four tires so have speed right away might not work. We should be ok."

Brandon Jones: "I think we are really good. I know we could have run a 40 (18.400) without out traffic on our mock run. The car feels really good and I am excited for tomorrow."

Scott Heckert: "I am happy. We had a slight issue with the engine, but it was minor and we are fast. We could run 18.5's and I am really pumped.

Cameron Hayley: Tweeted he was very fast earlier before he got in his Super Late Model.

Kenzie Ruston: "It's a pretty big change to go from one team to another. We were better at the end of the day then when we started. I think we can race well tomorrow."

Gray Gaulding: "If we run well in this car we plan to run in it at Daytona. We didn't run a ton of laps because we tested and we want to keep the mileage down on the motor."

One of the home track favorites at New Smyrna Speedway, Daniel Keene Jr., had an adventurous opening night in the Pro Late Models feature.

It all started by the Weeki Wachi, Florida driver being involved in the first two cautions, the second for which he was later black flagged for as he did not adhere to the track officials' request to go to the rear of the field.

"There was fluid or something on the race track and we were all slipping and sliding," explained the 37-year-old. "The first incident the other car just came up into me because of whatever was on the track. The second one, it was just Brad (May) and I getting together while sliding all over the place."

As for not responding to the track officials wanting him to go to the back of the pack on the ensuing restart and subsequent black flag, Keene offered; "I really didn't know which one of us they were telling to go to the rear, then the black flag came out and it for me! I was a little upset, but that's behind us now and we've got some ground to make up the rest of the week." He ended.
