SPEEDWEEKS TIME CAPSULE: Throughout New Smyrna Speedweeks, Speed51 will take a look back at some of the history of this event with our partner site, 51’s Third Turn (thethirdturn.com). Some of short track racing’s best have been able to claim the title of World Series champions while others yet really broke into the national scene thanks to this event.

Today we recognize the accomplishments of Rocky Hill, Connecticut’s Reggie Ruggiero. “The Reg” and his iconic #44 Mario Fiore modified team won three Tour-Type Modified championships at New Smyrna, taking the crown in 1986, 1987, and 1989, Ruggiero beat the best Modified drivers of his day like Tom Baldwin, Mike Ewanitsko, and Jimmy Spencer. Between 1983 and 1990, Ruggiero racked up an astounding 28 Tour-Type Modified wins, a number that stands third all-time in Smyrna World Series history.

Ruggiero also wound up being a prolific Modified winner in the North. He is easily the greatest driver to never win a NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour championship, recording 44 victories (second on the all-time wins list) and was the series points runner-up an incredible seven times. He was also a multi-time champion at Riverside Park Speedway, one of the most iconic short tracks in all of New England, tacked on with his 1988 victory in the Race of Champions. You can view all of Ruggiero’s career accomplishments by viewing his driver profile on 51’s Third Turn:http://thethirdturn.com/wiki/Reggie_Ruggiero

The track has seen much needed improvements over the last 3 years including new lights, new walls, and a new configuration for 2013. The Mini Outlaw karts put on an amazing show with 2 and 3 wide racing throughout the field. Millbridge Speedway is only open on select Wednesday nights for racing.

Comment From jay

thye gave silk back his points that he lost?

The DQ from Sunday night was a race procedure penalty, not a technical disqualification. Hence, he was awarded last place finisher points for Sunday’s event and not a complete wash.
