SPEEDWEEKS TIME CAPSULE: Throughout New Smyrna Speedweeks, Speed51 will take a look back at some of the history of this event with our partner site, 51’s Third Turn (thethirdturn.com). Some of short track racing’s best have been able to claim the title of World Series champions while others yet really broke into the national scene thanks to this event.

Tonight we recognize the career of the great Richie Evans. The “Rapid Roman” from upstate New York defined the Tour-Type Modified division at the World Series, not only helping bringing it to the speedway in 1976 but being one of the fan favorites that drew the crowd to New Smyrna and earning the Modifieds their permanent place on the Smyrna schedule. Evans was as equally powerful on the track, capturing 6 World Series titles (1977, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1983 and 1984) in his distinctive off-orange #61 DeWitt machine. Evans’ 39 wins on the Tour-Type Modified win list here is just second behind Ted Christopher despite racing in half of the World Series Christopher has.

Evans, who became the first Modified driver inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame, earned plenty of accolades all across the country during his racing career. His nine career NASCAR Modified championships, including eight consecutive, remain the gold standard of NASCAR history. He won the prestigious Race of Champions three times at three different tracks (Trenton, Pocono, and Pocono’s infield track), tacked on victories in the Yankee All-Star League and championships in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series. All in all, some historians have calculated Evans won 479 feature races before his tragic death in a practice accident at Martinsville Speedway in 1985. You can view all of Evans’ accomplishments by visiting his driver profile on 51’s Third Turn:  http://www.thethirdturn.com/wiki/Richie_Evans

Rob Fuller has an honorary crew member along for the ride with him today at New Smyrna. Joshua Bell was a senior in college when he was diagnosed with Stage II leukemia. Through the next two years, he went through several rounds of chemotherapy, several minor procedures, one surgery and many warming and caring thoughts from everyone in his life.

To honor Josh and share his story, Rob Fuller has named Josh an honorary crew member both here at New Smyrna and at this past Tuesday’s UNOH Battle at the Beach at Daytona.

“This is an important cause for me and I want to do all that I can to spread the message about early detection of cancer,” said Fuller. “I met Josh last year at the New Hampshire race and wanted to tell his story to help others potentially identify cancer symptoms. I really want to moti-vate our race fans and my industry friends to share Josh’s story during the Daytona races — someone in their life may need to see it.”

Rob Fuller Motorsports and 15-40 Connection will team up to illustrate cancer symptoms through young adult cancer survivor stories throughout the 2014 RFM race season which will include races on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, Modified Racing Series and more. For more, visit www.15-40.org
