SPEEDWEEKS TIME CAPSULE: Throughout New Smyrna Speedweeks, Speed51 will take a look back at some of the history of this event with our partner site, 51’s Third Turn (thethirdturn.com). Some of short track racing’s best have been able to claim the title of World Series champions while others yet really broke into the national scene thanks to this event.

Today, we recognize the accomplishments of Oakville, Ontario’s Junior Hanley. A respected car builder and racer already back in the 1970s, Hanley began coming down to Florida late in the decade and really made his name in two ways: winning with pure talent and winning with some of the most “unique” cars you’ll ever see. Hanley won three World Series titles in Late Models – 1980, 1981, and 1990 – while he also built and raced Tour-Type Modifieds and Limited Late Models.

Hanley’s career blossomed on the national scene in the 1980s and 1990s. He won championships in the ACT Pro Stock Tour, ARCA/CRA Super Series, and Iceman Series. He also wound up winning in the ASA National Tour, ARTGO Challenge Series, Glass City 200, Oxford 250, and LaCrosse’s Oktoberfest. He was one of the first inductees in the Canadian Motorsports Hall of Fame. To see all of Hanley’s career accomplishments, you can check out his driver profile on 51’s Third Turn –http://www.thethirdturn.com/wiki/Junior_Hanley

Millbridge Speedway is the new breeding ground for future NASCAR stars! In 2011 the Burnett’s took over Millbridge Speedway to convert it to a premier Outlaw Kart Track! The track has seen much needed improvements over the last 3 years including new lights, new walls, and a new configuration for 2013. The Mini Outlaw karts put on an amazing show with 2 and 3 wide racing throughout the field. Millbridge Speedway is only open on select Wednesday nights for racing. This enables people who travel or race at other venues on the weekends to race with us and has a good time during the week. Click here for more information.

Defending NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion Ryan Preece is here at New Smyrna running for the week-long championship in the Tour-Type Modifieds. This is the first time he has ever run for points here at New Smyrna. If he were to win the title he would be only the second tour driver since 1985 to follow up a NASCAR Tour championship with a title at Speedweeks. Ted Christopher was the other in 2009.

We also asked him what would mean more, the Richie Evans Memorial 100 or the week-long title?

“I never thought about the championship,” said Preece. “Now that they don’t have us racing on Saturday (after the Evans) we had an opportunity to run for it this year. The Richie race would mean a lot, and I guess if a title would come on that night it could really be special. We just want to win races for now and see what happens.”

Dan Leeck had an adventurous trip from Birch Run, Michigan to get to Speedweeks. The brutally cold winter that his home state of Michigan is experiencing extended even further south for the team who is here competing in the Pro Late Models division. “We couldn’t drive any faster than 40-45 the whole trip.” He explained. Due to the snowstorm that shut down parts of the south, the team had to detour through North & South Carolina to get to Florida. “When we hit the Florida state line that was the first time we didn’t have to drive through snow.” He laughed. The total trip took an even 24 hours from start to finish for the driver who finished third in the 2013 JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour Points Standings.

He was one of the first inductees in the Canadian Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2000. To see all of Hanley’s career accomplishments, you can check out his driver profile on 51’s Third Turn – http://www.thethirdturn.com/wiki/Junior_Hanley
