SPEEDWEEKS TIME CAPSULE: Throughout New Smyrna Speedweeks, Speed51 will take a look back at some of the history of this event with our partner site, 51’s Third Turn (thethirdturn.com). Some of short track racing’s best have been able to claim the title of World Series champions while others yet really broke into the national scene thanks to this event.

It would be almost impossible to talk about World Series champions without mentioning David Rogers. Sure, he’s been the big New Smyrna gun for decades now but the World Series is a whole new challenging level of competition. But Rogers has matched his competition and led the charge for the hometown contingent for over three decades in this event.  He has captured four titles in the Super Late Model ranks – 1987, 1999, 2001, and 2009 – winning races against cagy veterans like Mike Eddy and Dick Trickle all the way to holding off youngsters in this decade like Stephen Nasse and Kyle Benjamin. Known for his distinctive blue and white TM Ranch machines and his charismatic personality, Rogers may be reaching the twilight of his career but still shows the talent and wisdom to contend for race victories week in and week out. He currently sits 6th in World Series SLM points.

Rogers has had a stellar career outside of this event. He most notably captured the 1994 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national title and captured his first WAAS Florida state title last season. He also won the inaugural FASCAR Super Late Model Series crown in 1999, has four Bright House Challenge Series titles, and race victories in the old ALL PRO Super Series and Florida United Promoters Late Model Series. He is also tied for most Snowball Derby appearances with 29 starts in the prestigious event, with a best finish of 4th back in 1979. You can view all of Rogers’ career accomplishments by viewing his driver profile on 51’s Third Turn:http://www.thethirdturn.com/wiki/David_Rogers

11:03
We spoke to Spencer Davis after his busy night. He says he feels pretty good and will sleep well tonight. He says every day he takes it slowly and builds up momentum to when it’s time to race. Key is being conservative throughout the day.

Tonight’s race will honor the late great John Blewett, III. Born on the Jersey shore and cutting his teeth growing up at Wall Stadium and Flemington Speedway, Blewett became popular with the fans not only for his hard-charging style and his jovial personality and bright smile. Blewett and brother Jimmy hailed from a racing family and their closeness off the track made their teams tougher on the track.

Blewett won 10 times on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, captured track championships at Flemington and Wall, and won the North-South Shootout twice as well as the 1995 Race of Champions. He made his impact down at New Smyrna Speedway, winning multiple times in the World Series behind the Brady #00. In fact, his last career Tour-Type win came here in February 2007 before he tragically lost his life in an accident at Thompson Speedway that August.

Tonight we honor Blewett with a 76 lap race, matching his iconic car number.

TECH UPDATE: According to crew chief and car owner David Hill, Spencer Davis’ 79 Tour-Type Modified was too low in pre-qualifying tech and will only get one lap of qualifying. Hill said that it’s not a huge problem only getting one lap in qualifying because Davis is scheduled to time trial first. Going out early is a disadvantage anyway, so having only one lap won’t necessarily be an issue and he pointed out that having a longer race tonight is better for Davis’ development if they have to start deeper in the field.

3:49
Andy Seuss has informed Speed51 that his World Series effort is over after a piston broke in cylinder #8 on his machine. The motor in Seuss’ car was an old Dodge engine so there are no nearby replacement parts Seuss and team could easily grab. Seuss remains in high spirits though and says he plans to stay and watch great Modified action for the rest of the week all the same.

Sherwood Park, Alberta driver, Erica Thiering is looking for better luck during the last four nights of Speedweeks in her black #96 Pro Late Model. (Speed51.com photo)
3:22
Erica Thiering is a five-time track champion at her home track of Edmonton Raceway Park in Edmonton, near her native Sherwood Park, Alberta / Canada. The reigning 2013 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Alberta Provincial Champion is making her first career appearance in Florida during Speedweeks in the Pro Late Models division and came into the marathon seven races in nine days jaunt with high expectations.

However the expectations and the reality of Speedweeks hasn’t been to kind to the 23-year-old as a plethora of issues from Clutch issues to Transmission problems, driveline problems in general, to the latest culprit holding back the Thiering efforts, Brake gremlins have thwarted hers and the teams efforts thus far.

In three Pro Late Models Features, Thiering’s best finish has been a 15th on opening night of the World Series back on Friday, February 14th and coming into tonight’s race, she’s 19th in Speedweeks points, but only 10 markers outside of 10th.

“We expected the competition and everything around us to be tough down here, but we’re fighting our own car this week it seems.” Stated Thiering as she took advantage of a rare relaxing following Pro Late Models Practice. “We keep fighting the car and it’s been a little overwhelming too with all of the great teams down here. But we’ll keep pressing on. We’ve got four more days down here and I know we’re better than what we’ve shown.” She ended.

Known for his distinctive blue and white TM Ranch machines and his charismatic personality, Rogers may be reaching the twilight of his career but still shows the talent and patience to contend for race victories week in and week out. He currently sits 6th in World Series SLM points.

Rogers has had a stellar career outside of this event. He most notably captured the 1994 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national title and captured his first WAAS Florida state title last season. He also won the inaugural FASCAR Super Late Model Series crown in 1999, has four Bright House Challenge Series titles, and owns race victories in the old ALL PRO Super Series and Florida United Promoters Late Model Series.

Millbridge Speedway is the new breeding ground for future NASCAR stars! In 2011 the Burnett’s took over Millbridge Speedway to convert it to a premier Outlaw Kart Track! The track has seen much needed improvements over the last 3 years including new lights, new walls, and a new configuration for 2013. The Mini Outlaw karts put on an amazing show with 2 and 3 wide racing throughout the field. Millbridge Speedway is only open on select Wednesday nights for racing. This enables people who travel or race at other venues on the weekends to race with us and has a good time during the week. Click here for more information.
