An impressive stat about tonight’s race, in 300 laps of racing only once was a wrecker brought on track. It was when Chris Fontaine was tagged and crashed in turns one and two.

9:29

Lap 86: And this lap Pollard falls back in line second once again.

Lap 77: Pollard gets the advantage on the bottom down the backstretch and gets credit for leading that lap at the line.

9:26

9:20

Lap 55: Grill and Pollard have now put Nasse down one lap.

GREEN: Chadwick leads into turn one with Daniel right on his rear bumper.

7:12

On the initial start and subsequent restarts of tonight’s 300-lapper, the leader has the choice of starting on the inside or outside line.  The second-place car then must go to the opposite lane from the one the leader chooses.  From there on back, all cars must line up as they run, meaning third starts on the inside of the second row, fourth on the outside of the second row and so on.  All restarts will be double-file.

7:11

As mentioned earlier, tonight’s race is a 12-tire race.  Teams have the four tires that the cars qualified and start the race on and two sets of tires that can be put on at any time during the 300-lap race.

7:09

Normally in the 125-lap Southern Super Series presented by Sunoco events, there are bonus points awarded for qualifying and the top-five runners at a lap-75 competition caution.  There is also a dice roll invert to determine the starting lineup.  Tonight, the cars will start straight-up as they qualify.  There will be bonus points awarded for qualifying, but no in-race bonus points.

There will be no scheduled breaks in the race tonight.  But, as mentioned in the driver’s meeting, if the field runs 100 consecutive green flag laps, a caution flag will fly.  That rule will not apply if the 100th-lap competition caution would fall inside the final 25 laps of the race.  So, if the race goes green on lap 100, a caution would fly on lap 200 if all the laps in between are run under green.  If a caution flies on lap 180, there would not be a yellow at 280.

7:09

YELLOW: Daniels comes down and makes contact with Chadwick. Daniels spun and Chadwick carried on with the lead.

7:09

Lap 1: Daniel leads the first lap by a nose.

7:09

GREEN: Chadwick and Daniel side by side for the entire first lap leaving the field in their dust.

After setting fast time, Bubba Pollard told 51 that he was surprised to earn that title. He had been focusing on race runs throughout practice and was just hoping to qualify fourth or fifth. Now that he has set fast time, he hopes it isn’t a bad omen and the speed he had been planning on for the race goes away.

The pit area here at GMP is quite a bit more crowded than earlier. Several groups of hired pit crews are milling around the pits. We see some Richard Childress Racing crew members around Daniel Hemric, some PIT Instructional School crew members with Dalton Grindle’s car and more. One of Hemric’s crew members this weekend, Tim Ladyga, is a crew member at RCR and is Hemric’s Legends Car owner. Hemric recently won the Legends Pro Division Championship at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Summer Shootout.

The rain is starting to let up a bit and there is bright skies on the horizon, so hopefully we can start the track drying process shortly.

We’re still waiting out a bit of a rain shower.  All Southern Super Series cars have gone through tech and sit on pit road under car covers.  Once the track is ready, SSS qualifying will begin.

The 51st Annual People’s United Bank Milk Bowl is an event on many short track fans bucket list. This year’s event will take place on October 5-6 at the famous Vermont track. Drivers will compete in a three-segment event with the hopes of drinking the fresh milk and immortalizing themselves by kissing a cow. It has become one of the more popular short track events in the United States. For more information, please visitwww.thunderroadspeedbowl.com.

A pre-race concert is about to start, but a brief pop-up shower has hit GMP.  It’s not hard and the radar is pretty clear behind it, but it’s got the on-track concert on hold for the moment.

Elliott and team have been telling us all weekend that they are ready for race time and aren’t really stressing over practicing in the current heat as it doesn’t really mirror race conditions.

Comment From Marshall

What’s going on with Chase Elliott, he’s been very slow through these two practices? Taking it easy? Or seriously not fast?

1:13

We heard an unofficial report that it was possibly a fuel line that had come loose, which would not be absolutely detrimental and Wilson could possibly continue on.

Stopping on or near the track to bring the yellow flag out will be a two-lap penalty. Also, unapproved driver changes will result in a forfeit of purse money. If a driver spins three times on their own, they will be brought to the pits for consultation.

9:19

Also, like the Snowball Derby rules, if at any point tonight 100 consecutive laps are run under green flag conditions, a competition caution will fly. The pits will still be hot and normal pit road rules for this event will apply, meaning laps still count and drivers can lose a lap on pit road.

9:17

Tonight’s race is a 12-tire race. Teams have four on the car and eight in the pits.

9:15

Caution flag laps do count tonight.

9:13

There is no invert following qualifying tonight. The field will start as they qualify. Other SSS races feature a post-qualifying invert and another invert at a competition caution. Tonight’s race will be 300 laps, straight up without any invert or breaks.
