We checked with Ricky Brooks about whose lead came out during the PLM race. He rolled all the cars over the scales and it could not be determined which car it came from. Brooks stressed in today’s drivers meeting and the one two weeks ago before this event was rained out, that all lead must be painted and have a car number on it. That will be checked during Snowball Derby week for both Pro and Super Late Models.

Short track drivers, crew chiefs and team members from across the country will have two opportunities this winter to take their on-track performance to the next level as GRIP Seminars announces events in Columbus, OH, November 2-4, 2012 and Portland, ME, February 15-17, 2013.

Building on the success of last year’s inaugural GRIP Seminar, these seminars will offer short track racers the opportunity to sit in on courses covering topics such as setup basics, tires, bump stops, shocks, geometry, spotting, social media and more. By joining the GRIP Contingency Program on Facebook (link below), you can earn free credits to upcoming seminars!

Eighteen courses led by industry experts and insiders are offered with packages available that allow you to pick only the courses you want or a complete “checkered flag” package for all 18 courses.

For more information and to register for a seminar, visit www.gripseminars.com and be sure to “Like” GRIP Seminars on Facebook, www.facebook.com/gripseminars.

In chatting with hometown hero Johanna Long earlier today, we learned that she will be competing in both the Snowflake 100 and the Snowball Derby the first weekend in December here at Five Flags. Long will drive the same Tommy Rollins car that she’s competing with here tonight in the Snowflake and will be in her usual Super Late Model, the same one which she won the Snowball Derby with two years ago, in that 300-lap event December 2nd.

Long is also thinking of running a “throwback” paint scheme on her Super Late Model car…one that replicates her scheme from her first year in Late Models when she was 14.

Yes fans, the driver of the No. 98 Modified is D.J. VanderLey. VanderLey, a semi-regular competitor in the Pro and Super Late Model ranks here at Five Flags, is making his Modified debut tonight. He is in the same car that Gerald Wilkerson crashed and suffered injuries in at Mobile International Speedway (AL) last month. While Wilkerson is recovering from his injuries, VanderLey is running the car that has been totally re-built since the crash.

Only two drivers have not yet hit the track, and both have plenty of laps here and probably aren’t in much of a hurry. NASCAR Nationwide Series regular, Snowball Derby winner and former PLM track champion Johanna Long’s car still sits in her pit stall, as does the No. 1 of 2012 PLM track champ Mike Garvey in his.

This event was originally scheduled for two weeks ago, but Mother Nature intervened with rain, pushing the Whataburger 100 to tonight. No such issues this time around, luckily. There isn’t a cloud in the sky and temperatures currently are in the low 80s with a slight breeze. It’s a gorgeous day in Pensacola.

We are in the infield snapping photos during the opening bit of practice, so we won’t have any timing and scoring updates until we get back to the press box. Hand count shows about two-thirds of today’s field has already practiced in the first 15 minutes of practice.
4:07
Practice is underway. Spencer Davis, Zak Hausler, Justin South and Chris Davidson are among the first on track.

The first point of the drivers’ meeting was track promoter Tim Bryant thanking the drivers for being here today and also encouraging them to attend tomorrow’s JEGS 50 Pro Late Model race at Gresham Motorsports Park (GA) and next weekend’s Alabama Pro 200 at South Alabama Speedway.

The drivers meeting is scheduled to begin in about five minutes. We’re headed that way and will have some info from there shortly.

One event that is not on the schedule posted a few minutes ago is a 10-lap exhibition for Late Model Trucks. That will be the first feature of the night. No points or money will be awarded, nor will there be tech. According to FIve Flags Speedway promoter Tim Bryant, the track is looking at perhaps bringing the Late Model Trucks into FFS in 2013 once a rule package is determined. Trucks that compete at different tracks throughout the Southeast all have differing rule packages, so it is a goal after tonight’s exhibition and some upcoming rule meetings to have something to move forward with.

A quick glance through the pit area shows about 20 cars, but we’ll get a more accurate count once everyone goes through the tech line and draws for qualifying. That has to happen before the drivers’ meeting in about 20 minutes.
