Comment From Brianctnc

I hate it for Todd but think he kinda took himself out of it

7:47

Comment From Bill

let the crate debate begin again!

7:46

Szegedy: "I did everything I could to win this race. Just came up short."

7:46

Todd Szegedy: "I have no idea what happened. I have yet to see it. But I had to vent my anger somehow. It seems we have our wings taken away all year, weve had terrible luck. Racing's pretty damn humbling."

7:44

Silk "I hate it. Todd's a friend. That's why you hate running against friends"

7:44

No celebration for Silk. He climbed from the car without a fist pump or anything. (Speed51.com photo)

7:44

Ron Silk "As far as I could tell, I kept it as low as possible in the turn. I feel bad for him, but we were going for it"

7:40

Szegedy has crashed Silk on the cool down lap.

7:40

George Brunnhoelzl, III in sixth barely edges out Danny Bohn for the Whelen Southern Modified Tour class victory.

7:39

LAP 150 - CHECKERED - Ronnie Silk wins the UNOH Perfect Storm 150 over Todd Szgedy. Ryan Preece, Justin Bonsignore and Ron Yuhas, Jr.

7:39

LAP 149 - WHITE - Silk still has a healthy lead. Szegedy has cut a good bit of it but it will not be enough.

7:39

LAP 147 - 1.6 seconds. Can Szegedy catch Silk?

7:38

LAP 147 - Szegedy flying by Preece on the outside.

7:38

LAP 145 - Silk has a healthy lead on Preece. Szegedy closing in on Preece.

7:37

LAP 142 - Without a caution, this is Silk's to lose.

7:37

Bonsignore is reporting he may have a flat tire.

7:37

LAP 141 - TEN TO GO - Szegedy to fourth. Szegedy to third!

7:36

LAP 137 - Bonsignore loses a lot of track position as he gets loose in Turn Three. It's Silk, Preece, Bonsignore, Yuhas and Szegedy.

7:36

LAP 136 - GBIII is the WSMT leader in sixth.

7:36

LAP 135 - Szegedy flying. Up to fifth.

7:35

LAP 134 - Coby done for the night with suspension damage. Newman done too.

7:35

LAP 133 - Squirrelly restart as Silk nerfs Bonsignore. Preece and Bonsignore at it for second.

7:35

Getting the restart with 132 down.

7:34

Szegedy's car owner Mike Smeriglio looks up dejectedly for a replay of the incident. (Speed51.com photo)

7:34

We were told that the caution was thrown for the Szegedy spin. They had not thrown the yellow specifically for the Turn Two spin.

7:34

LAP 130 - CAUTION RUNNING ORDER:

1 Silk
2 Bonsignore
3 Preece
4 Yuhas
5 Goodale

6 Bohn (WSMT leader)
7 Brunnhoelzl
8 Stinson
9 Heagy
10 Szegedy

11 Speeney
12 Coby

7:33

Coby will need to pit as he has a flat right.

7:32

Kievman will get the free pass. It looks like Szegedy will be forced to remain in the back. He is in 10th as they run on the track.

7:32

Newman was in the Turn Two wad up that ultimately left Ted Christopher's damaged #3 sideways (and the only true victim) at corner exit.

7:31

Newman comes to pit road with another flat right. His second of the day.

7:31

It looked like Silk got into Szegedy as they raced through three. Not sure if Szegedy slowed for the caution and Silk didn't or if Szegedy and Silk were just racing hard. It seemed Silk moved up as Szegedy went down.

7:30

CAUTION - A few cars spun in Turn Two. Then Szegedy started to slow down and got spun out. Coby and Chew also in it in Turn Four.

7:30

LAP 126 - RESTART - Slow restart. Szegedy and Silk side by side in Turn One.

7:29

Doubling up for the restart. We are looking at 125 laps on the scoreboard, 25 laps to go.

7:29

He was in the lap 3 crash, lost a lot of laps repairing a fluid leak and is way back in the field.

7:29

Comment From Amanda

What happened to Patrick Emerling?

7:28

Jimmy Blewett with heavy damage. (Speed51.com Photo)

7:27

Track crews are having to stay in Turn One. Some part of the track seems to have had an issue since the Lia wreck.

7:27

Donny Lia's back up car on the hook.(Speed51.com Photo)

7:26

Justin Bonsignore's team has been told by Doug Coby's team that Coby thinks Bonsignores right rear tire looks low.

7:26

Heagy pitted under that caution and will lose one spot.

7:25

Lia got towed. Lia did make hard contact with the outside frontstretch wall after further review on the replay.

7:24

Preece, in third, believes his car bent a spindle in that contact with TC and thus can only run the high line and is stuck in third.

7:24

LAP 119 - RUNNING ORDER under CAUTION:

1 Szegedy
2 Silk
3 Bonsignore
4 Preece
5 Coby

6 Chew
7 Yuhas
8 McKennedy
9 Goodale
10 Brunnhoelzl

11 Danny Bohn
12 Ken Heagy
13 Thomas Stinson
14 Mike Speeney (free pass car)

7:23

Blewett has climbed out of his car. His night is done. Lia may need a hook as he still can't refire and lose a second lap.

7:22

Donny Lia's night comes to an end. (Speed51.com photo)

7:22

Lia lost a lap as he could not refire.

7:22

LAP 114 - CAUTION - Lia spins on the frontstretch. Blewett loses his left rear and spins on the backstretch.

7:21

LAP 114 - Danny Bohn has closed on the back bumper of Brunnhoelzl in 10th. That is the battle for the Southern Modified Tour win.

7:21

LAP 113 - Coby sails around Chew on the outside for fifth.

7:20

RESTART - A bit of an ugly restart from 5th on back, but all good for Szegedy. He clears Silk.

7:20

Szegedy will choose the inside, Silk the outside. Bonsignore and Preece may out the next row.

7:20

Lia got a tow adjustment and will barely stay on the lead lap.

One to go on the restart. We will get the restart with 111 of 150 laps completed.

7:19

Ronnie Silk is second but reporting his car may be too loose to do much with Szegedy.

7:18

Lia will pit under this caution for more adjustements. As will Newman.

7:17

Cars refire.

7:17

We just checked in with the SPEED crew and there has not been a time limit discussion just yet.

7:16

Also on the lead lap:

13 Bohn
14  Powell
15 Stinson (first car a lap down, will get free pass we blieve)

7:12

We are going red. They are having an issue with the backstretch wall and may need a patch.

We are beginning to look seriously at the time limit with 42 laps to go and 15 minutes to get this in.

7:12

LAP 108 - Not much change since the last running order:

1 Szegedy
2 Silk
3 Bonsignore
4 Preece
5 Chew

6 Coby
7 Yuhas
8 McKennedy
9 Lia
10 Goodale

11 Brunnhoelzl
12 Heagy

7:11

Kyle Ebersole pits. (Speed51.com Photo)

7:11

The two drivers utilizing NASCAR's Robert Yates Racing SPEC Engine currently run second (Silk) and fifth (Chew).

7:07

Ebersole could drive away, Flemke will need to get the hook.

7:07

Flemke had some help off of Turn Two. Ebersole spun on his own accord coming out of Turn Four.

7:06

LAP 103 - CAUTION - Ed Flemke, Jr. around and into the back stretch wall. As a mirror image, Ebersole does the same on the fronstretch.

7:06

LAP 102 - Szgedy has entered an absolute gaggle of lapped machines.

7:05

LAP 100:

1 Szegedy
2 Silk
3 Bonsignore
4 Preece
5 Chew

6 Coby
7 Yuhas
8 McKennedy
9 Lia
10 Goodale

11 GB3
12 Heagy

7:04

LAP 97 - Coby also by Yuhas, he's up to sixth.

7:04

LAP 95 - Chew under and past Yuhas for fifth.

7:04

LAP 92 - George Brunnhoelzl, III in tenth is pretty much locking down the Southern Modified win if nothing happens to him the rest of the race. Danny Bohn is behind him by nearly half a lap.

7:03

LAP 88 - Ryan Newman, three laps down, just shoved Eric Goodale up the hill. It appeared he was trying to bumpdraft down the frontstretch with Goodale down the front.

7:02

LAP 86 - Szegedy and Silk have a carlength separating those two. Then about two seconds back to the third place battle in which Bonsignore is beginning to really work Preece

7:01

LAP 82 - Ted Christopher returned to the track. Silk pulls away from Preece as Preece has to hold off Bonsignore in the battle for third.

7:00

RESTART! Szegedy to the lead, Silk will hold off Prece for second on the high line.

6:59

We are back under caution as the halfway break is over.

6:45

Newman is 20th, three laps down.

6:43

Preece will be 4th on the restart.

6:43

To review, Preece and TC made heavy contact with each other racing for second in Turn Two. Both hung on to it, but Christopher had a flat left rear and looped it out of Turn Four.

6:42

LAP 61 - CAUTION - TC had some damage, could not hang on to it. He spins off of Turn Four. Kyle Ebersole then T-boned him but luckily Ebersole had slowed significantly by then.

One thing to perhaps keep an eye on. We are now one hour away from the scheduled TV window for this Modified race. If the race is still going on at 7:30pm ET, NASCAR Officials will instruct the teams on what the procedure will be to finish the race. This was discussed in the television production meeting earlier this week, according to SPEED pit road broadcaster and Speed51.com's Bob Dillner. The race must be complete in time for the live SPEED broadcast of tonight's NASCAR Camping World Truck Series event.

6:32

Cole Powell, in 14th, gets the free pass. So fourteen cars on the lead lap for the restart.

6:31

6:20

Big damage for Mike Stefanik as well. (Speed51.com Photo)

6:20

Donny Lia has pitted to attend to his car during this caution. He was in the back of the pack so we don't think he got any damage.

6:20

Tim Brown got it bad too. (Speed51.com Photo)

6:19

Mike Stefanik: "Ryan Newman spun by himself. They just started getting crossed up. The 93 car hit me a ton from behind. The next thing I knew I was looking at a big concrete wall"

6:15

During the pace laps, Justin Bonsignore (@JBonsignore) tweeted this picture from his cockpit. (From Twitter)

6:15

They are applying speedy dry in Turn Four right now. That may be because the damaged car of Patrick Emerling sat there under red, so it's possible he may be losing fluid.

6:15

Back to yellow.

6:15

Tomaino and Seuss are two drivers not on our original list of accident drivers who we now notice on pit road getting attention.

6:14

22 cars remain on the track under red. About four or five more are in the pits with minimal damage (or just checking tires after spinning). In the end, it appears about 7-9 cars will be out of this race due to the wreck.

6:13

Not sure if we said this, but we are under red. Three laps have been completed. Again, it appears all drivers are okay. Tim Brown and Wade Cole were a little ginger getting out of their machines but both did climb from their machines under their own power.

6:12

There may have been others. Half drove away. Pennink's car came in on the rollback, pretty badly damaged. Brown will get the hook, pretty torn up as well.

6:11

Cars in the Lap 3 Wreck:

6:08

The incident started when Ryan Newman (77) looped it and cars piled in behind him. (Speed51.com photos)

6:07

02 Tim Brown is getting extra attention from the track rescue crew. He climbed out under his own power, but he has had back pain lately and it appears he may have aggravated that injury. Rough way to end what had been a historic week for the 9 time Bowman Gray champ.

6:05

We are pleaased to report it appears that everyone is okay. Wade Cole is the last one in the accident scene to get out.

6:04

Stefanik's car is also torn up.

6:04

Newman drove away without damage. He more or less spun down the front as the drama happened behind him.

6:03

Tim Brown is also on top of a car, it appears to be Frank Fleming.

6:03

Also involved, Jason Myers

6:03

Big melee on the front stretch. (Speed51.com photo)

6:03

It started when Newman spun off of four. We will call cars when we see them. Smith landed on top of B. Myers and Pennink.

6:02

LAP 3: BIG CRASH ON THE FRONT. Ten cars crash

Comment From Jaws

Thanks for the coverage and the mobile app, I will be watching on the LIRR ride home! By the way I heard LW's team shut down this week.

5:01

Same story as Brian Loftin. Did not enter this event Mechanical issues at Bowman Gray may be one of the reasons we've been told but no word from the LW camp for sure on what is happening.

5:01

Comment From Brianctnc

no LW Miller ?

4:53

Our friends at Racing Electronics are here at the track and can program your scanner with all the Modified team frequencies. Stop by and see them in the midway here at the track or view their entire product and service lineup online at www.racing

Earlier this year, Montgomery Motor Speedway (AL) announced there would be a Super Late Model race at the half-mile off of Old Selma Road in Montgomery, Alabama. The race, scheduled for September 1st and 2nd, is the first Super Late Model race at the track in over two years. The 150-lap spectacle will feature a six-tire rule, and pay $6,000.00 to the winner.

Now, as the date gets closer, excitement starts to build. Entry forms are now available, and entries have begun to come in for the race. Drivers get your entries in now as the qualifying will take place in the opposite order of entries received. Fans, mark your calendars for September 1st and 2nd for the 150-lap Super Late Model extravaganza at Montgomery. For more information, visit www.montgomeryspeedway.com

Comment From Bud Kenny

3rd place Qual. giving up there car for 2nd place Qual with misfortune.... what a great team!!!!!

4:41

Comment From Richie Pallai

My guess the delay means they will start everyone, in this economy and the commitment of these teams, that's the way to go!

4:30

NASCAR Officials are STILL working out the starting lineup.

4:29

Brian Loftin was never entered for today's race. He had some mechanical issues in the last Tour race a few weeks ago at Bowman Gray. Not sure if that had anything to do with his absence today.

4:29

Comment From Brad

Where is the #23 of Brian Loftin. I just tuned in so that's why I ask

4:24

He withdrew from the Modified event to focus on his NASCAR Camping World Truck Series debut tonight. He will drive the BKR #19.

4:24

Comment From dirty

Thought ryan blaney was there

4:22

We caught up with Mike Stefanik, whose lap time was not impressive in qualifying. He told us that the car that went out before him (Joe Scarbrough) laid down some fluid on the track. That is why he went slower than expected and likely why some of the cars after him either spun or wiggled.

4:17

Comment From Wayne

The only one that has an older hauler than Bob Garborino's old cab over box truck, would be Wade Cole's open 6 wheel ramp truck. That's old school !!!

4:12

Perhaps shade will cover this track by the end of the race since the coliseum style grandstands here block the setting sun's rays early. But the sunset probably won't occur right until the end of the event at the earliest.

4:12

Comment From Brian

Do you expect much temperature drop by 6PM and complete track shade?

4:10

While Ron Silk is the overall Coors Light Pole winner from the Northern Tour, Ryan Newman will get the Coors Light Pole for the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour as the highest-qualifying NWSMT registrant.

Yes, on SPEED at 6pm.

4:02

Comment From Dillon Oliver

what time does this race air tonight? SPEED channel, correct?

3:59

NASCAR offiicals are still sorting out who gets the provisionals. We don't want to speculate and excite or disappoint any fans with our unofficial count, so we'll wait on NASCAR's official lineup.

3:33

That completes Coors Light Pole Qualifying for tonight's UNOH Perfect Storm 150. Ron Silk has set fast time. Donny Lia was second-quick on his first lap, but as we mentioned earlier, his team is withdrawing the No. 4 after hitting the wall on his second lap.

3:33

Emerling said he thought he saw the checkered hence only why one lap. But he did say his team played it safe, tightening the car up at the last minute when all those cars began to spin out.

Short track drivers, crew chiefs and team members from across the country will have two opportunities this winter to take their on-track performance to the next level as GRIP Seminars announces events in Columbus, OH, November 2-4, 2012 and Portland, ME, February 15-17, 2013.

Building on the success of last year’s inaugural GRIP Seminar, these seminars will offer short track racers the opportunity to sit in on courses covering topics such as setup basics, tires, bump stops, shocks, geometry, spotting, social media and more. By joining the GRIP Contingency Program on Facebook (link below), you can earn free credits to upcoming seminars!

Eighteen courses led by industry experts and insiders are offered with packages available that allow you to pick only the courses you want or a complete “checkered flag” package for all 18 courses.

10:26

The speed was a big surprise today as Todd Szegedy and Donny Lia were in the 131 MPH bracket which is faster then all track records for touring series at this venue.  Szegedy was pleased with the laps and the handling was really good.

"It was a really good run," said Szegedy. "It never felt like I was going as fast as I went.  The laps felt about like they did last year.  It's pretty cool to be that fast."

We looked around for Donny Lia several times and could not find him.  Hopefully we'll get a word with him before qualfying.

The lap times could be slower in the second practice as the sun comes up, but there will also be more rubber on the track that could help the speeds.  We'll just have to wait and see.

We checked in with a few drivers about the changes that have been made to the track and we got a few mixed answeres.

"I couldn't tell the difference," said Todd Szegedy. "The race track feels fast and I was going around them on the outside with no problem."

"I feel like the track was a better the last time I was here," said Ryan Preece.  "I know the pole is going to be really quick."

"There is no difference in the track," said Ted Christopher. "It's way up in the high lane and we won't be that high on the track."

"I don't see any changes in the way it drives," said Patrick Emerling. "It feels good when you can be fast and you don't notice the track changes."

Fan feedback after the first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series weekend here at Bristol told the track management that they wanted a return to the racing on the "old" track configuration. Back in 2007, progressive banking was put in place here at the .533-mile facility. The progressive banking has been taken away and the concrete surface in the third groove has been ground down. We'll chat with some of the drivers after this first practice to see if the change in the surface in the corners has any effect on the faster speeds that we're seeing here today.

9:46

Donny Lia is now the quickest man in town with a 131.398.

Patrick Emerling went for a solo spin earlier in this first practice. (Speed51.com photo).

9:41

We are into the final 10 minutes of practice and will have a full rundown following the action.

9:40

All 40 cars have been on the track today in this practice.

9:39

Right now the Szegedy lap is about a 14.647 which is almost three tenths quicker then the track record for the Sprint Cup Series.

9:35

Todd Szegedy had enough of the 130 club and just went 131.003. That's the fast time so far.

9:34

The 130 club now has three numbers as Patrick Emerling goes to P2 with a 130.309

9:26

Eric Beers joins the 130 club as he goes 130.097 and is P2.

9:24

Lots of work to continue a busy week for Mike Speeney. (Speed51.com photo)

9:24

It has already been a long week for NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour competitor Michael Speeney. Speeney had many items stolen out of his trailer. He purchased another trailer to bring here, but all the items had to be replaced to get ready to race at Bristol. Then, when he fired the car up for the first time this morning, the team found that their brand-new radiator had a leak. There are numerous water bottles strewn about in front of Speeney's car that replaced the water lost in the leak. Speeney is hopeful to get on track shortly.

9:23

Ryan Newman is on the track for the first time today.

9:22

Top Five: Todd Szegedy, Donny Lia, Mike Stefanik, Patrick Emerling and Rowan Pennink

9:20

9:15

We should have the times after practice, but for now we'll work with the speeds.

9:15

Comment From Kenny

It baffles me that tracks use MPH instead of time in their scoring reports. Most all short trackers go by the stop watch.

9:14

Andy Seuss is into the top 10 on the speed charts. He's sixth with a 128.048

9:14

No visible damage to Kievman as he rolls past

9:13

We are just under 40 minutes to go in this practice.

9:12

Donny Lia is back up to P2 with a 129.807.

Still no Ryan Newman or Ted Christopher in practice.

9:09

36 of the 40 cars have been out on the track.

9:09

We are pretty sure they are. This is not the type of track where you bring old tires to test on. We'll ask around after practice.

Joe Scarbrough, Cole Powell, Danny Bohn, and Gary Fountain Sr. are among the cars that have been out on the track.

8:37

Interesting pit note is that Newman's 77 has an 'S' next to its number implying Newman will be counted as a Southern Tour competitor today. In all of his previous Mod starts, they have only counted towards the Northern Tour

Most of the cars that have gone out here early are running here for the first time.

Let go VA drivers Aj Winstead, Tommy Stinson, Joe Scorborgh. Have a good run today guys

8:28

He is not here today.  They had engine trouble at Bowman Gray and that could have led to the decision to not show this week.

Comment From modfan

Is LW Miller racing this today? Don't see him on the entry list.

8:26

We are less then five minutes from cars hitting the race track for the first time.

8:26

Ted Christopher returns to Bristol after missing this race one year ago.  In his two prior starts at the half mile have resulted in a second-place finish and 190 lap led out of a posable 300. He still has yet to score a win at BMS.
