Comment From Lbow

Thanks for your updates. And thanks to Mr. Bud for posting the address so we could tune in. My son is running a fever, his mama is out of town, spongebob and speed 51 for me. Thanks again.

9:07
LAP 147 – Jesse Little with a late-race charge dives under Poole.
9:06
LAP 146 – Piercy will finally clear Campbell for sixth.
9:06
LAP 144 – The top-five seems set for the night forbid anything crazy happening.

Kyle Grissom
Brennan Poole
Jesse Little
George Miedecke
Andy Mercer

9:06
LAP 143 – Grissom walking away. He took the lead early charging from fifth and has never really been challenged.
9:05
LAP 140 – TEN TO GO – Grissom puts another carlength on the field. Piercy relegated to seventh as Campbell keeps it wound on the high side.
9:04

9:04
LAP 136 – Piercy under Campbell for sixth.
9:04
LAP 134 – Miedecke gets the fourth position. Closing in on Jesse Little for third. He’s running a groove right in the middle of the track. Everyone around him is either glued to the bottom or running another groove higher.
9:03
LAP 132 – Miedecke pushes Mercer up the track but can just still not get past for fourth. This is a great two-groove track tonight.
9:02
LAP 131 – GREEN – Poole remains glued to the bumper of Grissom but Grissom gets a carlength down the back.
9:02
Kaleb has really faded. He’s either right at the tail end of the lead lap or one of the first a lap down.
9:01
Comment From pressleyfan

what happened to kaleb pressley

9:01
LAP 128:

Brennan Poole runs second. I called him last week while writing a story for Speed51. He told me the race he’s proudest of was this race last year at Hickory. He had worn his tires out too early at Myrtle Beach the week before and rode around for the first 130 laps here and then made his move in the final circuits. Could history repeat itself?

8:59
LAP 126 – CAUTION – Joey Herques loses an engine while running 11th.
8:59
LAP 125:

1 Kyle Grissom
2 Breenan Poole (-1 second)
3 Jesse Little
4 Andy Mercer
5 George Miedecke

7 Yontz
8 Piercy
9 Bassett

8:58
LAP 120 – A slap of the wall has cost Coleman Pressley. Back to fourteenth.
8:57
LAP 116 – Miedecke under Mercer. Can’t do it.
8:56
LAP 115 – First side by side battle is between Joey Herques and Coleman Pressley for 11th. Pressley hangs on for now.
8:56
LAP 113 – Top three remained evenly spaced.
8:55
LAP 109 – Jesse Little is putting together the best race of his young career. He is third, just three or four carlengths back of the lead duo.
8:54
LAP 106 – Grissom by two carlengths on Poole.
8:53
LAP 104:

1 Grissom
2 Poole

8 Piercy
9 Bassett
10 R.A. Brown
11 Coleman Pressley

8:52

8:48
LAP 90 – Yontz under Cox for seventh. Piercy follows.
8:47
LAP 86 – Miedecke to sixth.
8:46
LAP 84 – GREEN – Grissom, Poole, and Little bumper to bumper.
8:45
Looks like just cosmetic damage now.
8:45
Er maybe not. The better look I get at Turlington’s car, the more it looks like he just made an amazing save on the backstretch.
8:45
LAP 81 – Turlington has driven away. Left side pretty pancaked but driveable.
8:44
LAP 81 – Rodenbeck and Roberts pit.
8:44
LAP 80 – CAUTION – Piercy bounces off wall, into Turlington. Turlington spins and pounds in the inside backstretch wall.
8:43
LAP 78 – Little is wisely following Poole to the front, gets third by Mercer.
8:43
LAP 77 – Brennan Poole gets by Mercer in lapped traffic. Behind Grissom by a whole straightaway.
8:42
LAP 75 – HALFWAY – Miedecke and Bassett have not been able to get away from each other as they have both moved through the field. Battling for seventh with each other, closing in on Cox and Campbell.
8:42
LAP 74 – Coleman Pressley has slipped to 10th. Michael Faulk off the pace and appears to have lost power.

8:41
LAP 70 – Muzny’s night is done. Grissom about to close in on the back of the field.
8:40
LAP 69 – Brad Cox under Campbell in a battle for fifth.
8:40
LAP 67 – Biggesst lead of the day for Grissom. Half a straightaway.
8:40
LAP 65 – Miedecke threads the middle to clear Yontz on his inside and Pressley on his out.
8:39
LAP 64 – Bassett clears Miedecke, under Coleman for seventh.
8:39
LAP 60:

1 Kyle Grissom
2 Andy Mercer
3 Brennan Poole
4 Jesse Little
5 Garrett Campbell
6 Brad Cox
7 Coleman Pressley
8 Bassett
9 George Miedecke
10 Alex Yontz

Miedecke drives up to the outside of Bassett as Bassett blocked by the slower Coleman Pressley car.

8:38
LAP 59 – Poole has gotten by Campbell and Jesse Little will get by Campbell as well.
8:37
LAP 56 – Bassett under Kaleb Pressley, Miedecke behind him with Yontz on his outside. And they are closing in on Coleman Pressley.
8:37
LAP 54 – Kyle Grissom by four carlengths on Mercer. Four more back to the continuing battle of Campbell and Poole.
8:36
LAP 53 – Bassett, Kaleb Pressley, Miedecke in a three-car battle for eighth.
8:36
LAP 50 – George Miedecke moves into the top-ten, looking at Bassett for ninth.
8:35
LAP 49 – Poole can’t quite clear Campbell.
8:35
LAP 48 – Coleman Pressley might really have been just saving his tires. He’s setted into seventh and is looking for sixth.
8:35
LAP 47 – GREEN – Kyle Grissom gets a great start. Poole under Campbell for third.
8:34
LAP 45 – Robert Johnson, III pits for adjustments. Car way too loose.
8:33
LAP 43 – CAUTION – Stankewicz came back out only to spin.
8:32
LAP 42 – Bassett looking under Kaleb Pressley for 8th.
8:32
LAP 39 – Grssom spun the tires a little bit. Mercer gives Grissom a shove into three but nothing doing.
8:31
LAP 38 – One to go at the line. UARA STARS are one of the rare series that does single file restarts.
8:30
LAP 34 – Running Order under Caution:

1 Grissom
2 Mercer
3 Campbell
4 Brennan Poole
5 Jesse Little
6 Brad Cox
7 C. Pressley
8 K. Pressley
9 Bassett (tire still rubbing, but does not pit)
10 R.A. Brown
11 Rodenbeck
12 Miedecke
13 Yontz
14 Roberts
15 Tyler Brown
16 Matt Piercy
17 Turlington
18 Adam Long
19 Faulk
20 Herques
21 R. Johnson, III
22 Muzny (-1)
23 Stankewicz (appears to have parked already)

8:28
LAP 32 – CAUTION – That gaggle explodes with Muzny spinning off of four.
8:27
LAP 30 – A gaggle of six cars around 11-16th going at it hot and heavy. David Roberts trying to emerge from that group.
8:26
LAP 27 – Kaleb Pressley passes cousin Coleman for fifth but then Brad Cox mixes it up three wide and Coleman Pressley will lead Cox and Kaleb Pressley this time by.
8:25
LAP 24 – Grissom pulling away steadily from Mercer as mercer begins to work the high line. Tire rub on Bassett.
8:25
LAP 23 – Pressley back to fifth as Poole slides by. Pressley talked a lot in pre-race about saving his tires. Maybe it’s that, maybe it’s the fact that the #1 is one of the weaker teams on the tour, not used to running this high.
8:23
LAP 16 – Kyle Grissom gave Mercer a tap, just enough to scoot him up the hill. Side by side through three and Grissom makes the pass.
8:23
LAP 14 – Grissom fastest car right now. He’s all over the back of Mercer as Campbell side by side with Pressle.
8:22
LAP 13 – Kyle Grissom drives under Pressley and easily clears into one. Pressley’s car just way too high.
8:22
LAP 12 – Mercer under Pressley in 2, to the lead on the backstretch.
8:22
LAP 11 – Brennan Poole under Jesse Little. Kyle Grissom dives under Poole to make it three wide. They both clear Little.
8:21
LAP 6 – GREEN – Pressley fends off Mercer. Bassett jumps to the high side of Grissom.
8:20
LAP 5 – One to go at the line. Pressley, Mercer, Campbell, Jesse Little, Brennan Poole
8:20
Caution laps do count tonight.
8:19
CAUTION – LAP 2 – Pressley had just cleared Mercer when Mercer got loose and made contact with Campbell. Neither car spun but Campbell’s left front fender fell off and brought out a debris caution.
8:17
GREEN FLAG – Donnie Allison throws the green. Side by side through one and two, Mercer and Pressley
8:16

8:16
One to go.
8:13
We’re rolling! Pace laps.
8:12
The grandchildren of Banjo Matthews have just given the command to fire engines.
8:12
Talked to Coleman Pressley before the race. He was off this weekend with the K & N Pro Series East and wanted badly to race. So last Saturday at Langley, in between the practices and the race he actually called up Don Satterfield himself and asked for the ride tonight.
8:09
Comment From CheatedupCrateMotor

obviously they’ve done some good work on that #1 car

Any news on Turlingtons car?

7:56
Ed Richey was the winner of the Vintage Stock car. 1965 Chevrolet Impala looks nice in Victory Lane.
7:54
Vintage Stock race is over. We are just a few minutes away from the start of the Banjo Matthews Memorial for the UARA STARS
7:47
Looks like mainly late 60s, early 70s. But I see one or two that are probably earlier.
7:47
Comment From jr

What model years are the Vintage Stocks?

7:40
National Anthem has been sung. Command has been given. First things first is a 25-lap Vintage Stock race.

7:12
I’ve travelled with the K & N Pro Series East the last three weeks and it turns out I’m not the only series road warrior on that tour here tonight. Matt DiBenedetto is going to be spotting for Coleman Pressley while Corey LaJoie is hanging out with George Miedecke
7:10
It’s our pleasure to be here.

Comment From Mike Ray

Thank you for all your hard work this evening!Speed51.com rocks!

6:37
Autograph session has begun. We’ll go check in on Turlington while we’re down there.
6:31
Something may be up with Scott Turlington’s car. He did not practice in the final session today, did indeed turn in a qualifying lap, but I just saw him pull back towards the infield while trying to fire his car to get on the grid.
6:27

Interesting scene on the track as Vintage Cars, a division that races Stock Cars as you would see back in the 50s and 60s, are making laps. They look, more or less, like flying bricks.
6:03
The autograph session will begin in about fifteen minutes.
5:45
Reminder that this is just one Trackside Now event going on on Speed51.com right now. See the drivers of the Gulf Coast Championship Series compete at Mobile International Speedway this evening: http://www.speed51.com/2011_Stories/Miller_Lite/Trackside_Now_6-25.html. Last night, Augie Grill won his record 8th Blizzard Series race. But Mobile is Bubba Pollard’s home turf and you can bet he will look to avenge a so-so 5th place finish yesterday.
5:39
Just found out that Miss UARA, Brittany Poe, will also be the pace car driver tonight.
5:34
Allison Legacy Qualifying:

1 5 Jantzen Stirewalt 16.993
2 33 Dale Ogburn 17.069

8 97 Ian Isringhausen 17.889
9 10 Ben Klatt 18.197
10 14 Nate Steadman 18.987

They race 50 laps after the UARA cars. If we are still finishing UARA post-race, we will try to at least let you know who wins the ALS race.

5:28
Andy Mercer will start on the pole tonight (51 Photo)

4:02
Qualifying inspection begins as we expect Allison Legacy cars back out soon. Note that qualifying for UARA is actually at 5, as we are expecting a drivers meeting at 4:45.
3:41
Next on the track will be another Allison Legacy practice at around 4.
3:37
UARA cars begin qualifying inspection.
3:33
No, Turlington did not run. I do not believe there was a problem with the car. They might have just been happy with the car. Remember, this is a night race so chances are the more you adjust on a car in the day to make it better, you might just be dialing it out for when it counts the most.
3:32
Comment From lmsc chik

Did Turlington not run in the last practice?

3:32
Allison Legacy practice has been peppered by plenty of spins from the #14 car of Nate Steadman who will try to make his Allison debut tonight if he can keep the car in one piece in practice.
3:27
The track here at Hickory has already been well broken in this year (51 Photo)
3:23
Defending series champion Coleman Pressley will make his first start of the year here tonight (51 Photo)
3:14
We see Allison Legacy cars on pit road. These cars have some names in them you might recognize for famous family members as their children/relations begin to race. Tyler Hill is the points leader, the brother of NNS Rookie of the Year Leader Timmy Hill. Casey Hillenburg is the son of Rockingham Speedway owner Andy Hillenburg. John Hunter Nemechek is the young son of NASCAR star Joe Nemechek.
3:12
The #1 car is owned by former Late Model standout Don Satterfield. Julia Dawson drove that car last year and the beginning part of this year, but the two parties have decided to go in different directions. Grant McGinnis was in the car last week.

Garrett Campbell and Kyle Grissom flip-flopped from first practice as Campbell edged out Grissom for P1 in the final shakedown.
2:48
Final practice for the UARA STARS has concluded. Allison Legacy cars will practice after the funeral.

We will go down to get practice times.

Having been to Hickory many times before, I can tell you there’s nothing weirder than being at a racetrack and it being completely silent all around you.

2:44
Not sure how much longer is in this practice session. Last we heard was that the funeral will begin at 2:45. Teams must know they are crunched for time as the track is the busiest it has been all day.
2:44
That’s the great thing about Hickory though. The drivers and names that have filtered through these gates could make up their own Hall of Fame, much less belong in the NASCAR Hall.
2:43
While I will say that Kelly was both a talented driver and a great person for the sport, I agree about Prestwood Mike. Max Prestwood, Jr. won four track championships and the 1990 WRS (today known as the Whelen All-American Series title)
2:42
Comment From mike bolick

Oh Hickory’s Wall of Fame, does anyone find it wierd how Max Prestwood Jr, the Winningest driver at Hickory, most Pole’s. Most Wins in a season, and brought the 1990 Winston Racing Series NAtional Championship back home and is not listed on there, but they have Kelly Earnhardt, never Won a race there, listed on it??? UNREAL

2:39
In this practice, seeing Coleman Pressley in the #1 really work the high side. He’s about half a groove higher than anyone else.
2:38
#60 RA Brown has broken an oil line. His team is under the hood.
2:25
After a discussion, the UARA has elected to run practice before the 2:45 funeral deadline as opposed to wait after it. Cars have begun second practice.

Lots of tradition here at Hickory. Will one of the drivers here tonight go onto have a career worthy of making this board of champions?
2:06
Because the funeral on the hill will cut into final practice, the track will die down for a stretch of time. We’re off to go catch up with some drivers and grab some food.

We’ll get more comprehensive times in a second, but here’s a quick and dirty top-ten.

Kyle Grissom
Garrett Campbell

I stand corrected as Robert Johnson, III will dash out for a lap or two.
1:42
Jesse Little is the last car that will practice in this session as only two minutes remain.

Top-Six as We Run:

Garrett Campbell
Andy Mercer
Scott Turlington
Matt Piercy
Brad Cox
Kaleb Pressley

1:35
With the extra time, some teams are taking advantage to put in their longest runs of the day. Matt Pierce and the #51, Jesse Little and the #97, David Roberts and the #18 have been pounding the pavement for the last few minutes.
1:27
The track has died down except for Brennan Poole competing for a few laps. We just found out practice has been extended to 1:45.

Why? Hickory Motor Speedway is located right next to a cemetery and, out of respect, events are suspended when a funeral is held. A funeral will be held at 2:45 today, so the final practice will be axed by a few minutes.

1:18
Ten minutes remain in the first practice. As soon as it’s over, we’ll go down to pit road to check out what’s going on plus try to pick up practice times and the entry list.

Campbell, K. Pressley, Bassett are your top three halfway trough first practice.
12:59
George Miedecke hits the track for the first time today. He won the Bobby Isaac Memorial here last year so he would love to add the Banjo Matthews Memorial 150 today to bookend the track’s big “memorial” races.
12:54
Add #54 – Kaleb Pressley to those running tonight.
12:51
Cars that did not practice yesterday that we can confirm are here:

#04 Ronnie Bassett
#60 R.A. Brown
#18 David Roberts

I also see a #5 in the pits I do not recognize.

Can confirm that Coleman Pressley will be the driver of the #1.

12:41
Not certain if the #1 will indeed be driven by Coleman Pressley or if Julia Dawson, the normal pilot of that machine, will be driving it tonight.
12:40
