There are only a select few who have as much devotion to the sport of racing, on a short track level… Kyle Busch is one of the biggest. I love him because he loves my sport. He hasn’t made it big and forgot about the little guy. He remembers where he came from. Same with Tony Stewart, Kasey Kahne, Clint Bowyer, etc.

We at Speed51.com get a ton of emails, tweets and Facebook messages asking for some publicity for drivers, series and tracks. Much of the news-worthy stuff ends up on one of our outlets. Sometimes, we do take their advice and make them a feature story or do something cool to promote what they have going on.

Now, we want to step up our coverage and publicity for drivers throughout North America to continue bringing fans the most comprehensive short track racing coverage on the web.

To do that, we need your help for two new areas of Speed51.com. Sign up for our Speed51.com Driver Database and Social Media directory. It’ll help you get some story ideas through us at 51 and some new fans when we publish the social media page.

awesome first big race of 2012…we’ll be following along from nova scotia…great field of cars too

12:13
The only outside wall here at WCS goes from the exit of turn four to the entrance of turn one. The entire infield is protected by a retaining wall.
12:13
The view of turn three here at WCS. A short way off the banking in this corner will land you in a real watermelon patch!
12:08
Still waiting for the first cars to hit the track.  Officials are inspecting the cross-over area from the “outfield” to the infield to ensure the track is ready for cars.
12:06
Great to hear you’ll be here.  With a full racing card and an autograph session, combined with great weather, we hope to see a bunch of fans here on Sunday.
12:06
Comment From Greg

You guys are doing a great job. Would be there if it were at Lanier today but I am still making the 3 hr. drive Sunday morning.

12:04
That’s right, there’s no chance of rain for the rest of the weekend.
12:03
Comment From Tom De Vette

no rain anymore huh?

12:01
We hear some Pro Late Model engines have fired.  We’re headed out to the track to take some pics and for some updates trackside.
12:00
Kyle Busch Motorsports’ Seth Holbrook watches as their team rig moves spots in the infield to find a flatter spot to park the car.
11:57
Pro Late Model practice is scheduled to begin in a few minutes.  Track crews are still sweeping off the remnants of mud and dirt tracked onto the racing surface by team rigs as they pulled from the outside of the track to the infield.
11:56
As of right now, Reaid is scheduled to be in the Elliott team car in this event and in the Rattler, March 2-4th at South Alabama Speedway.  There is a possibility for more, but those are the only two on the schedule at this time.
11:56
Comment From Michael Rusher-Horner

is TJ Reaid going to be with Bill Elliotts team all season or is this just a one-shot deal?

11:55
He is in the Pro Late Models and there is still a partnership there, but this car is a Pollard Motorsports Super Late Model numbered 26 like the Pollard Family cars have traditionally been.
11:55
Comment From Colby

Is Bubba not driving for Ronnie Sanders anymore?

11:54
Comment From Mike Ray

Thank you for this weekend’s coverage!I Hope the track hits a homerun!Speed51.com is your short track connection!

11:54
Looks like our first shout-out to Austin Theriault, the young Fort Kent, Maine driver who will be driving the Brad Keselowski Racing #29 Super Late Model this weekend and several more times in 2012.
11:53
Comment From Willettes

Looks like a pretty stout field! Good luck Austin, from the boys up in the County!

11:50
Drivers wait in line to get their transponders. (Speed51.com Photo)
11:44
Also mentioned in the meeting was that if there is a need for Last Chance Races, they will be the first on-track events at 2pm Sunday.
11:42
TJ Reaid and Bubba Pollard are both former winners here as several drivers have not even raced here. (Speed51.com Photo)
11:39
Defending SpeedFest Champion Chase Elliott is a former winner here at Watermelon Capital Speedway (GA). (Speed51.com Photo)
11:38
CRA’s tech crew, who all left the Midwest after work yesterday, are still en route to the track, so there is a possibility for no tech today. Tech was not scheduled for today, but should there be a chance for it, Luckett said they may do it.
11:38
Lots of faces are here for the Friday practice here at SpeedFest 2012. (Speed51.com photo)
11:36
Practice sessions will be 30 minutes long, rotating Pro and Supers until 4pm. Then from 4-5pm it will be PLMs only for that hour, then SLM’s only from 5-6.
11:34
CRA’s Glenn Luckett started off the meeting by thanking track staff as the racers for embracing this event on just about nine days’ notice.

Officials have called for a drivers’ meeting at the concession stand in the infield.  We’re headed that way and will have more coverage shortly.

We do know a few teams hit the track yesterday, including Brandon Jones’ Pro Late Model team and Kenzie Ruston’s Super Late Model team. They both rented the track for private tests. Other teams have either tested in recent weeks or, in the case of the Bill Elliott Racing team with Chase Elliot and TJ Reaid, got rained out when they tried to test last Sunday.

A quick review of this weekend’s race procedures, there was no testing policy for this event. In our opinion, that is fair because of the late-notice change of venue for this event just two weeks prior.

11:25
Comment From Dan

Heard that some of the teams got in a day of practice yesterday, no testing policy for this race? Thanks for the coverage(boss doesn’t thank you though!)

There were some pretty bad storms throughout the Southeast and Midwest yesterday which we are hearing may have slowed some teams from getting here this morning.  We do know of a few that are still en route because of these weather issues.
11:12
Our first rough count is 48 Late Models (combined between the two divisions) are on the premises here so far today.

Here at Watermelon Capital Speedway, the temperature is currently 58 degrees. There are some clouds in the sky blocking it from being completely sunny, but temperatures are expected to climb into the mid-60’s with the clouds going away later today. There is no chance of rain all weekend with mild temps. It’s a great way to start off the season with great weather, so we hope to see you at the track this weekend.
