There will be two nights of racing with the JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour and CRA Late Model Sportsman Series competing on Friday, July 19. There are roughly 30 minutes left in Super Late Model practice. Bubba Pollard, who remains atop the speed chart, just told us that he is pleased with his No. 26 and that the car’s drive off the corners is where it needs to be. But, as he mentioned, he said the same thing after practice yesterday, only to have the handling go away in last night’s feature.
3:34
About halfway through practice, Bubba Pollard is atop the speed chart with a lap time of 17.543. John Hunter Nemechek is second, followed by Mike Garvey, Chris Davidson and Logan Boyett.

Last night Bubba Pollard’s team changed transmissions on the No. 26 car in eight minutes during the 10-minute competition caution. Bubba’s dad Sonny just showed 51 the major dent in the transmission that was replaced cause by internal gears slamming into the outer walls of it. Pollard told 51 that it likely wouldn’t have withstood another restart, so the break came at a perfect time.

Speed51.com was just given a briefing from tech official Ricky Brooks on the fuel test process that Grill’s fuel underwent last night. Brooks uses a machine provide directly from Sunoco that detects a dye placed in their product. The Southern Super Series has a contract with Sunoco as its official fuel provider and presenting sponsor. If other fuel than the Sunoco purple is detected by the machine, the word “FAIL” is displayed on the screen. If the fuel passes, it says “PASS.” Brooks has the samples still from last night and showed 51 how some samples from Daniel Hemric and others displayed “PASS” and how Grill’s sample showed “FAIL.” Brooks told 51 that he had been stressing the mandate of running only the Sunoco fuel approved by the Southern Super Series each race leading up to last night’s event, the seventh on the schedule. It just so happened that last night’s race was the first one in which the Sunoco testing machine was used.

Another point that was heavily discussed in the drivers meeting was the importance of a good spotter in the spotters’ stand. Donnie Wilson brought it up because last night his car suffered substantial damage when cars far behind him piled into an incident several seconds after the caution came out.
2:22
Ricky Brooks, lead tech inspector for the Southern Super Series, now has the floor. He did address the fuel situation from last night by reiterating that Sunoco purple fuel is all that can be used. The fuel has a dye in it that catches any other fuel that may be mixed in.

We are headed to the drivers meeting. Undoubtedly a major point that will be addressed is the Southern Super Series’ fuel policy. Last night at Five Flags, Augie Grill was disqualified from his apparent victory due to unapproved fuel being found in post-race inspection. We will have more on that subject after the drivers meeting.
