Some attention has already been drawn this week to Pro Late Model competitor J.T. Schild, whose team showed up with the only open trailer currently on the grounds. The twenty year old from outside of Houston, Texas is not concerned with the big rigs he is up against or the fact that this is his first time ever at Five Flags Speedway.

“My grandfather always told me ‘we ain’t racing haulers; we’re here to race cars.’ Hopefully we can make the show. I feel not having any laps at this track I am an underdog, but I’m pretty confident that we can get the car dialed in on Thursday for the race on Saturday.”

A few of his family members have raced during Snowball Derby week in the past over the last few decades, including his father, and have provided some advice.

“My dad told me it’s a big toilet bowl. You’re constantly turning. He said ‘don’t lift, you can go a lot further than you think.’”

Dana Bowers made the longest haul this week over 2,600 miles from Medford, Oregon. Although he actually flew down, the driver who has raced on dirt and in motorcycles in the past before switching to Late Models in recent years compares the track and its banking to a larger version of Stateline Speedway closer to home in Idaho.

The Allen Turner Snowflake 100 entrant feels that with the top notch Port City car and brand new motor out of the Perfection First Motorsports shop from Marion, North Carolina that he will be able to give it the best he can for Saturday. Most importantly, he is here for one reason.

“It’s just fun, that’s all it is. Run with the baddest guys in the world and have a lot of fun. Finish first or last, it’s all the same to me.”

LaJoie said his car was one of the many that had to go through tech a second time. He said that the spoiler was too high as well as a couple other minor issues that the team had to fix. “If we didn’t have to go through a second time we wouldn’t be working hard enough,” said LaJoie. Seeing all the rigs and teams focusing on the job at hand this weekend I can’t help but think about the red & white 78. He was a true racer and always be missed this time of year. The feat he accomplished in 2003 starting in the rear of the field and winning the Snowball Derby will always be etched in history and everyone’s mind that witnessed it that day. Bob tells the great true story about that day that we love to hear every year and it brings a smile to our faces. Charlie Bradberry may be gone but we will NEVER forget him.
