Snowflake 100 drivers will have the chance to bring home the “Pelican Payday” tonight at Five Flags Speedway. The driver that wins the pole for tonight’s race will have the chance to double the winners purse if they elect to start from the rear and win the race.

The bonus, which equates to $7,000 and a total of $14,000 for winning the race, was offered up by Gene Boyter’s Ark-La-Tex Speedway in Louisiana and its celebrated Pelican 100 event in February.

Every day during the 2014 Snowball Derby, Speed51.com will award the “Cool Under Pressure” Award, presented by Fluidyne. This award will go to the driver who kept his or her cool when the going got tough. The winner each day will receive a product certificate from Fluidyne. For more on all the performance cooling products available from Fluidyne, visit www.fluidyne.com.

Friday’s “Cool Under Pressure” driver was Ty Majeski.  In a move that brought fans and fellow racers to their feet with arms raised up with delight, Majeski made a save of a lifetime when he kept his No. 91 Super Late Model out of the wall after coming inches away from hitting the inside and outside walls on his Snowball Derby qualifying attempt.  Majeski lost control off turn four, wiggled down the front stretch and looped his car into turn one, missing the wall again by a whisker.  The save thrilled everyone in attendance.  With a swift bit of driving, Majeski has a car that will compete for a Snowball Derby starting spot today in the Last Chance Qualifier.

For his save in Snowball Derby qualifying Friday, Ty Majeski is Friday’s “Cool Under Pressure Award” winner presented by Fluidyne.

Each day during the Snowball Derby week, Speed51.com and Five Star Race Car Bodies will present the “Tested Tough Award” to the driver who overcomes the most adversity or battles back from some bad luck. Sunday, after the Snowball Derby, the annual 51 “Hal Goodson Award” will go to the driver “Tested Tough” in recognition of Goodson, who finished the Snowball Derby several years back with a car that was torn to pieces yet still saw the checkered flag.

Friday”s Five Star “Tested Tough” driver was Augie Grill.

Grill, a two-time Snowball Derby winner and past Blizzard Series Super Late Model champion here at Five Flags, had an uncharacteristic problem in practice Friday morning. Grill spun out and suffered some damage to his No. 112 Snowball Derby Super Late Model. Still, he and his Grand American Race Cars team were able to get the car repaired and locked into the show later in the day in Snowball Derby Pole Qualifying. Grill proved his toughness in coming back from his incident to post the fourth-fastest time in qualifying.

For his “Tested Tough” day Thursday, Grill will receive a product certificate from Five Star Race Car Bodies. For more on Five Star Race Car Bodies, visitwww.fivestarbodies.com

Of those teams who have not practiced today, there’s a good reason; They have withdrawn. Chris Dilbeck and Kevyn Terry have withdrawn. Justin Steiner is now running his Pro Truck only while Stacey Crain has Willie Allen steering his machine while J.T. Schild has loaded up and is heading back to Texas.

Former NASCAR Camping World Truck Series competitor, Rick Crawford has been spotted in street clothes and doesn’t appear to be in any hurry to go out for Practice.

We just spoke with Brian Hoar who tells us he was very emotional after clinching his spot in the 47th Annual Snowball Derby. Hoar said that he climbed out of his car after qualifying thinking that there was no way he made the Snowball Derby. He got out of the car to see his crew celebrating and then said he got back in the car and sat there for five minutes to take it all in.

Hoar is the first driver from the state of Vermont to qualify for the Snowball Derby.

The Snowflake 100 Pro Late Models are the headliners this evening and as exciting as last nights Snowball Derby Super Late Models Pole Qualifying was, today’s PLM qualifications will be just as intense.

30 spots are open through qualifying with two provisionals reserved for the top two points finishers in the final 2014 Allen Turner Hyundai Pro Late Model Series points who didn’t get into the top 30 in Qualifying.

There’s also the possibility of a Past Winners Provisional (If Needed) for a former winner of the Snowflake 100 who doesn’t get into the show through qualifying.

That still leaves 42-43 cars on the outside looking in who will then have to compete in one of the two 30-Lap Last Chance Race Qualifiers. Those LCR’s will take only the top two an lock them into the Snowflake 100.
