6:33

Modified practice has concluded, and with it so has all of practice for Rattler weekend.  Next up, after the Cup Lite and Modified drivers’ meeting, will be qualifying for those two divisions, followed by features.  The Cup Lites will have their feature first, followed by the 125-lap Pro Late Model feature, with the Modifieds closing out the evening.

6:24

Former VIPER Series Champion here at South Alabama Speedway Casey Smith broke the trailing arm in his #99 car during qualifying, causing him to spin off the track in turns three and four.  Smith is guaranteed to start inside the top-10 tonight due to his win in the Super Late Model portion of the Alabama 200 in 2009, so he and the crew are working on their car in the pit area tonight with the help of the Kyle Busch Motorsports crew to get the #99 repaired for his 10th-place start in tomorrow’s Rattler 250.

6:21

Head Tech Man Ricky Brooks is in fact sticking to his duties checking over the Pro and Super Late Models and will not be racing his Modified tonight as originally planned.

We’ve gotten word that the top-5 Pro Late Models have cleared tech.

5:26

They are trying to carefully remove Casey Smith’s car from the grass outside of turn three. They have now got it rolling so we should be back underway with the rest of Super Late Model qualifying shortly.

5:17

Casey Smith will not make it back on the track to complete his qualifying run, he will be towed back into the pits. Early reports say be broke a trailing arm.

5:16

The #99 of Casey Smith spun going into turn three and slid off the track. Luckily, there are no walls in the turns or on the back straightaway here at South Alabama Speedway or that spin would have been a lot worse.

Comment From billy who is josh hamner driving for?

3:41

We are about 20 minutes from qualifying as the Pro and Super Late Model Teams work to get their cars through the tech line. We did talk to Ryan Lawler about his spin late in practice and found out that it was not him, but car owner Stanley Smith in the primary car which will not be raced today because of electrical issues.

2:10

While we’ve got a little down time here as the track is quiet and the cars are going through tech, we’re going to step out to grab some food and we’ll be back shortly.

At last count, there are 18 Super Late Models and 28 Pro Late Models on the grounds.  That does not count any Pros that will race in the Super race tomorrow, as previously mentioned.

1:35

Comment From Guest How many pros and how many supers are there?

1:30

Ryan Lawler has spun in turn two and off the track, bringing out a brief caution during Super Late Model practice.  Lawler got the car righted and went to the pit area without any visible damage.

1:28

Several Pro Late Model drivers, should they escape from tonight’s feature, are planning on competing in tomorrow’s Super Late Model Rattler 250 with the same cars. PLM drivers have the choice to either re-qualify with the Supers to determine their starting spot or stand on their Pro qualifying time for the SLM starting lineup.Stephen Nasse and Davey Coble are officially entered into the SLM race with their PLMs, and we’re hearing others including Jerick Johnson may be considering it. Josh Hamner, who was here just walking around the pit area earlier today, will be in Johanna Long’s Pro Late Model for the Rattler 250.

1:22

We’re hearing an unconfirmed rumor that Wayne Anderson’s Florida All Star Tour has 34 cars on the grounds at their second race of the 2010 racing season. They are racing today at Orlando Speedworld. Stay tuned to Speed51.com for more information.

1:20

Bubba Pollard plans to run an open-wheel modified tonight. He has been in six different racecars this weekend between his own, the #81 of Brandon Odom, the #118 of Johnny Henderson and the #42 of Tony Clark. Chances are, he has the most laps around this track this weekend.

But, BDI Racing spotter Matt “Duke” Kentfield will be on the call for tonight’s and tomorrow night’s action on RaceTalkRadio.com. Former BDI Racing crew member Brian Hicks is also here turning wrenches on David Hodges’ Super Late Model.

1:09

Bobby Gill and the BDI Racing team have not made the trip to the Rattler this weekend. Team owner Bob Dillner had planned to bring the #51 Chevy to South Alabama Speedway this weekend, but because of his duties at Atlanta Motor Speedway covering the NASCAR action on SPEED, the car remains at the team’s Concord, NC shop ready for action at races later on this Spring.

Ryan Lawler, Grant Enfinger, and Eddie Mercer are the first three drivers on the track for the last round of Super Late Model practice here today.

1:02

We previously reported that the #1 of Steven Davis was joining us today, however it is actually Nathan Davis. At this point we are unsure of the relationship but we will surely have more later.

12:59

It’s a great race with a rich history that has produced a lot of great drivers as well as many exciting finishes.

12:59

Comment From JOE BUFORD THE Rattler IS ONE RACE THAT I ALWAYS WISHED I RACED,,WHEN I WAS DRIVING

12:56

We have confirmed that Ryan Lawler did indeed have to switch to a backup car. They experienced some electrical issues in their primary.

12:54

Assuming you’re referring to Clay Alexander, he’s been quick in practice here today. His #84 was 5th fast in the last session. You can scroll back through our entried today to see how he’s been running all morning as well as in yesterday’s practice.

12:53

Comment From JOE BUFORD HI ,HOW IS CLAY DOING TODAY I WONTED TO COME BUT HAD SOMETHING COME UP

12:52

There are 10 minutes left in this session of Pro Late Model practice. We will post those times as soon as they become available. Next up is the final round of Super Late Model practice. After that all enclosed haulers will be removed from the pits, a feature unique to South Alabama speedway done so the fans in the stands have a clear line of sight all the way around the track, and all cars will head to pre-qualifying tech.

12:44

Not as far as we know, but we will definitely look into it. He has been fast in the past few practices here in Stanley Smith’s #49 machine.

Tony Clark is also here as a teammate to Pollard in the red #42 in which Bubba Pollard has had so much success in the last few years. Unfortunately we don’t have any Canadians in either of the field’s for this weekend. We do have a Minnesota native, Jerick Johnson, in the field for the Rattler 125 tonight. However, he currently resides in North Carolina.

12:21

Comment From Canadian racer did any Canadians come down this year?

12:21

Comment From Guest Did Lonnie Sommerville make the trip down?

12:18

Comment From Tim from Texas Thanks 51 for keeping us updated – Awesome – Good luck to Chris Davison and Casey Smith

12:18

Casey is a great racer, always puts on a good show.

12:17

Comment From Steve I agree with Jessica – Casey will be there at the end – I thought it was gonna be between him and Kyle Busch for the win at the Derby –

12:17

There are currently 18 Super’s here for the Rattler 250 tomorrow.

12:16

Comment From Voice of NSS Leaving Orlando after the FAST race and heading that way… should get there early in the A.M…. How many Supers do they have for the 250? Thanx -Mark Keeler

That would be the black #99 of Casey Smith from Austin, Texas. Although he’s never won the Rattler 250, he’s always a force to be reckoned with at South Alabama Speedway and anywhere else he takes his Rapid Disposal Super Late Model.

12:02

Comment From Jessica I live near Opp and attend the races regularly – All I can say is watch for the black 99 – Casey will be up at the front at the end of the day – He has dominated at this track!

11:55

Although there is a total of 4 hours of practice available to the Pro and Super Late Model teams today, most drivers also took part in a few hours of practice that they were offered here yesterday as well.

11:51

He is a great racer and a friend of Speed51, we’re just as disappointed as you are that he wasn’t able to make it down here to South Alabama for his first Rattler.

11:51

Comment From mich/travler i like to see gary st amant race more than he does.. he is a good racer just to sit around

11:49

The Pro Late Models are on track here for another 10 minutes then the Super Late Models will hit the asphalt for another 30 minute session.

Beau Slocumb, who has made many headlines over the past few years while taking a break from his racing career to fight cancer, has recently taken back to the track and his here with us this weekend in South Alabama. Slocumb and his #08 are entered in tonight’s Pro Late Model Rattler 125.

11:35

The Pro Late Models have hit the track once again for another 30 minute practice session.

This would have been Gary St. Amant’s first Rattler but he was unable to make it this weekend due to some financial issues.

11:32

Comment From Steve Where is Gary St Amant? How many total Supers are there?

11:31

There seems to be a pattern emerging here at South Alabama Speedway in the Pro Late Model 125. For the past two years, the winner of the event was not the driver who hoisted the trophy in victory lane, the past two winners have been decided in the tech line.Last year it was Augie Grill who held the trophy and took the pictures with the checkered flag but it was Bubba Pollard who went home with the trophy after Grill was disqualified for having a cambered rear-end.

In 2008, Steven Davis was crowned the winner but after a discrepency in the tech shed over his left side weight, Ryan Crane was the one loading up the trophy at the end of the night.

It will only be a few more hours before we see if the 2010 Rattler 125 will stick to tradition.
