Weather could be an issue today.   It is a bit chilly with a current temperature of 48 degrees.   It is only supposed to get up to around 53 degrees, but the problem is this evening.   Precipitation is supposed to move into Pensacola around 8pm.   If that time stays true, Derby qualifying should get in, but if it gets here sooner, it could be a problem.   Plus, it could be an issue for the local divisions racing tonight.   We will keep our eyes on the sky throughout the day.

9:17

Currently the driver’s meeting is taking place in the infield.

9:20

Comment From Mike Scott Alabama Weather form the west may be a issue tomorrow. They say we may get the S word here in northern Alabama.

We are hearing we have lost one Super Late Model from yesterday.   Brandon Odom will not compete in his SLM, but will still run the Pro Late Model.

9:46

Comment From ASG How about pics from yesterday?

9:48

We have just posted our photo gallery from Thursday on the Speed 51 Facebook page.   Visit the page and become a fan, then view the photos by clicking on the photo page:http://www.facebook.com/speed51

9:49

Tech is open this morning, and it is a busy place.   There is a steady stream of cars going through tech currently.

9:49

We have heard that John Bolen will be changing out the rear end of his Super Late Model.

9:50

Josh Hamner decided to skip the Fast Eddie’s Karting last night to work on his car.   He said they changed a bunch of things with it and hope they went the right way.

9:50

Comment From Guest Do you guys have a list of the derby qual draw?

9:50

We do, and we will have that up  later today.

9:50

Comment From matt Cool pics are posted on facebook!!

9:55

We are eight minutes away from the first practice of the day.

9:56

This will be a combined Flake and Ball practice.   Later in the day they will split the cars up and have seperate sessions for each.

9:59

Comment From DRLD I agree, love the pix!

10:00

Comment From Andy GO JOHANNA LONG!!!

10:00

Comment From Mike Scott Alabama Great pictures from 5 Flags and Fast Eddies. See you had a ringer (Brandon Carlson) with you.

10:01

Yesterday, a fan asked Speed51.com if Micky Cain, formerly of the ASA Southeast Asphalt Tour, was in attendance here at the Derby.  He wasn’t here yesterday, but we’ve already had a Cain sighting this morning at the track.

10:01

Comment From Hantz Fan Go Scott Hantz!!

10:02

Comment From Guest you guys do an awesome job with the coverage. thanks so much. my tickets are for sunday only this year… so you are keeping me up to speed till i get there!

10:04

The 10-11am practice session today will be a combined one for Snowball Derby and Snowflake 100 cars and that will be the final one under that format.  From 1pm to 2pm, there will be a dedicated Snowball Derby practice with only 10 cars allowed on the track at one time to allow teams to attempt mock qualifying runs.  Another Snowflake 100 practice session will take place starting at 2pm.

10:04

Comment From racer Any word on Dave Mader’s car??

10:05

Dave Mader’s team brought their car back to the shop last night and will try to repair it to race today, but the car was damaged pretty bad.  There is also a possibility of Mader getting another ride for the race if his car can’t be repaired.  We’ll keep you posted.

10:05

Comment From Guest Is Fultz running in both races or just the derby?

10:05

Jeff Fultz is only running the Snowball Derby.  He withdrew his Snowflake 100 entry.

10:05

Comment From Corey Latham Great coverage as usual guys, wish we could have been there. Looking forward to following the rest of the weekend, still laughing thinking about Stix going swimming in the infield

10:08

The qualifying procedure for the Snowball Derby is that in qualifying tonight, there will be 30 cars locked into the starting field.  Everyone else will run a B-Main and six cars will advance through that.  Then there will be two Blizzard Series provisionals available and (if needed) a provisional for the most recent previous Snowball Derby winner not already in the field.  Depending on whether or not that past winner’s provisional is needed, there will be a 38 or 39 car field for Sunday’s race.

10:08

Comment From Buzz I have had to pass on Derby week due to the “HOG Flu” but thanks to Speed51.com’s fabulous coverage, it is the next best thing to being there. THANKS

10:08

Get well soon Buzz!

10:09

Zack Neissner wrecked yesterday hard with his #2 Pro Late Model, but that car has been repaired and is lined up to practice.

10:09

Comment From Guest Good Luck to Kyle Busch and his team!

10:10

Comment From Guest How far back in points will the blizzard series go?

10:10

That all depends on who doesn’t make the race through qualifying.  The two highest points Blizzard finishers this year that don’t qualify will be in line for a provisional.

10:11

Comment From bubba do most of the drivers saty in the motorhomes at the track or do they hit the hotels?

10:11

That depends – plenty of drivers and teams have RVs here at the track while many stay in area hotels.

10:12

Comment From cody 51 Whos in the 31 car with the same pain as mercer?

10:12

James Buescher is in the #31 car.  He is a teammate to Eddie Mercer in a car entered by James Finch’s Phoenix Racing team.

10:12

Comment From ASG Who nominates cars for the best appearing car award?

10:12

The Speed51.com crew all put our heads together, dicsusses, debates and then duals to come up with the Best Appearing Car nominees.  Eight will be chosen and then fans will vote for a winner.

10:14

Comment From T. Morgan How did the Fast Eddies event go last night?

10:14

Very well.  It was chilly, but everyone had a great time and Scott Speed was the life of the party.  Brandon Carlson won both the Driver’s race and the Snowball Challenge.  We won’t talk about how the Speed51.com boys fared in the Media race.  It was ugly. We’ll have videos from the night up later on.

10:19

Comment From AJ Excellent coverage. I’ve already decided that I’m going to travel down for next year’s! Will there be an archived broadcast available sometime today of last nights Speed 51 radio coverage from Fast Eddie’s? Thanks!

10:19

There should be at some point when it is all prepped.  Visit RaceTalkRadio.com and it will be up at some point.

10:19

Comment From lumpy ASAMT Tech Director Who is all there from the great white north ( it is snowing here now) of the Midwest. You have already said Ross Kenseth. Anyone else? Is there a drivers list some where? Should have stayed in FL. for another week. But gotta get ready for the ASA Transcontinental Race in Africa. Thanx for all the updates… Thanx Lumpy

10:20

Brian Campbell, Johnny VanDoorn and Scott Hantz are a few of the other drivers who came down from the Midwest.

10:21

Comment From Chris Frost Any word on how the teching is going? Who has been dealt the most grief by brooks??

10:21

Actually, most of the infractions in tech have been minor so far.  Ross Kenseth has had to change spindles, but most of the other changes have been in the body department.

10:21

We are still waiting for practice to begin.

10:21

Comment From Guest Let’s go Bobby Gill !!!!

10:22

Comment From TSD.LLC Give it all you have Bubba Pollard!!!!!

10:23

Comment From Chris Frost Thats good news, i think brooks fair and unbiased teching has leveled the playing field and proved everyone has an equal shot. Which certainly helps the car counts.

10:23

Comment From racecar56 Re: Gary Lee Balough he is a federal inmate in Miami CCM with a 5-17-2010 release date, SAD!!

10:23

I knew that he had some legal issues, but wasn’t sure if he was still inside or not.  Thanks for the update.

10:24

Comment From Jim Rinden How has Ross Kenseth done in practice?

10:24

Ross Kenseth took an instant liking to the track.  He was quick right away in practice yesterday.

10:24

Comment From denny well, no one has asked yet this morning, so i will do it… are all of the porto-johns still in place? i hope none got hitched to a golf cart last night.

10:24

They appear to be all ok.

10:25

Comment From bubba is there a backup plan for the local divisions for tonight? or for qualifying?

10:25

Track officials have told us that they have come up with plenty of different back-up plans in case of a weather situation tonight.  What plan they use depends on if and when it rains.

10:26

In the drivers’ meeting, track officials told teams that the latest forecast that they saw showed a prediction of rain around 10pm tonight.  So they hope to move things along quick enough that everything will be wrapped up by then.

10:27

Comment From racefan good luck TJ Reaid

10:27

There are 35 cars lined up for practice.  Only 15 cars will be allowed on the track at the same time in this session.

10:29

Josh Hamner told Speed51.com that he was struggling with his #38 so far in practice, but changes were made to the car and he is hopeful for it to run better in today’s practice session.  “We’re gaining on it,” Hamner said.Hamner also reported that the #88 Super Late Model of his teammate Roger Reuse is running “really good.”

10:30

Track officials are turning cars loose on the track right now.  Practice is starting 30 minutes late, but it won’t be cut.  Track workers will instead give up their 30-minute lunch break to keep things on schedule.

10:33

The caution came out less than one minute after the green flag did in this morning’s first practice session for a spin in turn two by the #7 of  Shain Cheney.  it was a solo spin and no contact with the wall was made.

10:33

Comment From pam edwards GO TAYLOR SATTERFIELD!

10:34

Comment From Guest Is Scott Speed running in the Derby?

10:34

No, he is here as a fan.  Yesterday, he was busy trying to get Brian Scott’s autograph and then last night he had a lot of fun at the Snowball Showdown kart race.

10:35

Jimmy Weller has just spun in turn two to bring out the second caution period of this practice session.  Weller did not hit anything.

10:36

Under caution, we had another spin by someone trying to get onto pit road.  We cannot see what car that was from our vantage point but are told that they did not hit anything.

10:37

It is somewhat chilly and very overcast this morning.  Those conditions don’t seem to be working out well for the drivers in practice as cold tires might be contributing to the spins that we have seen so far.

10:38

Jake Kruger has just spun his #14 down the fronstretch.  He will drive away on his own, but has heavy rear end damage after backing the car into the inside/pit road wall.

10:38

Needless to say, the caution is now out for the third time.  We are only eight minutes into the first practice session of the day.

10:39

Comment From lou who is Glenn Allen Jr. helping out

10:39

We have not seen Glenn Allen, Jr. in the pit area yet.  But it’s a very crowded pit area.

10:39

Comment From denny So Ricky Turner is with Chase Elliot, and Freddie Query is with JoHanna Long… are there any other former stand-outs doing the mentor/coach/crew chief type role this weekend?

10:40

Tim Steele is the car owner for Tom Thomas, Ronnie Sanders is helping out Bubba Pollard and Maine racing legend Billy Clark is the crew chief on his son Cassius’ entry.

10:41

Comment From Guest They need to allow tire warmers at the Derby to cure this.

10:41

That isn’t likely to the happen.  In fact, Ricky Brooks told teams in this morning’s drivers’ meeting that if he sees any teams even have their generator exhaust pointed towards tires in tonight’s qualifying line, there will be penalties.

10:42

Mike Garvey has helped out several drivers, including Ryan Crane, in the past.  We’re not sure if he is here this weekend.

10:43

Comment From denny What about Mike Garvey… didn’t he used to help somebody out?

10:43

Another driver who is getting the help of other drivers is Justin Drawdy.  In Drawdy’s pit this weekend are Chuck Barnes, Jr. and Travis Kittleson.  We’re told that Canadian Lonnie Sommerville might be helping out later in the weekend too.

10:44

Comment From Guest We saw JR Norris in the pit on Wednesday night. Is he driving or helping someone? We miss him in this neck of the woods!!!

10:44

I think that JR Norris is helping out the Steven Wallace team, but I don’t know that for certain.  Jason Hogan is also here helping out Steven Wallace and Johnny Sauter is Brian Scott’s crew chief.  Dave Blaney is spotting for his son Ryan…the list goes on.

10:44

Comment From Whiplash Gear We are here in the shop in Kentucky, it is a toasty 33 Degrees. We aren’t getting much work done because you keep giving updates, If you could give a little worse coverage, we might get something done today, Updates? 04 Foley, 17 Brock

10:45

Johanna Long and Hunter Robbins are two of the several drivers doing double duty this weekend.   Both will not test their Pro Late Models as they are working only on their Super Late Models today.

10:46

There is a little bit of Northern influence in the BDI Racing pit of Bobby Gill today.  ACT Late Model / PASS North driver Joey Doiron and PASS Modified car owner Dave Weir (who is also the spotter for DJ Shaw) are both helping out the #51 team this weekend.

10:47

Comment From bob The legendary Dexter Canipe is there spotting for somebody this weekend in both races…

10:47

We also see that Bill Elliott is on top of the #9 hauler spotting for his son Chase.

10:48

Comment From 112the man hows augie today ready for the weekend sweep?

10:48

Augie and his team have been very relaxed this week.  They haven’t practiced much yet either.

10:50

Comment From gerry how is cassius clark running

10:50

We talked to Cassius Clark this morning and he told us that his car is getting better and is close to how his cars have run here in the past. The interesting thing about Clark’s car is that it is an old All Pro car that was once a perimeter chassis.  It was completely rebuilt and has run in PASS South this season.

10:50

Elliott Massey has his car back together after a brush with the wall yesterday.   The car looks good and should be on the track soon.

10:50

Comment From Andy Bobby Gill… well, there goes half the field.

10:51

Jerrod Foley’s team told us after they bounced their car off the wall yesterday and they put it back together, their car fit the templates better then before.

10:51

Comment From babbs0824 How is Randy Gentry doing?

10:51

Comment From Guest How has John Boy Wilkinson done on his first trip back to the Derby in a few years?

10:51

Comment From Andy How’s Johanna Long doing in practice? And Tim George Jr?

10:52

Comment From pam edwards HOW IS TAYLOR SATTERFIELD DOING?

10:52

No practice speeds are available yet from timing and scoring, but when we get anything we will let everyone know.

10:52

Comment From Guest Dexter Canipe is working with the #17 of Josh Brock from Corbin, Kentucky.

10:52

Comment From shutterbug Go # 9 Chase Elliott!

10:53

Comment From mike what is the web site to see the times on the cars !!

10:54

Comment From Guest Is there a list of practice times from yesterday posted anywhere?

10:54

The track uses Mylaps.com to post their practice times, but that probably won’t be updated until after the practice session is over as the timing and scoring staff is tied up when cars are on the track.

10:54

Comment From Fireman Lets go racing

10:55

Comment From race fan is stat boy froze up this morning

10:55

He’s from Northern Maine – so it takes a lot to freeze him!

10:55

Comment From Babbs0824 How many cars will make the Derby?

10:55

38 or 39 depending on whether a previous race winner’s provisional is needed.

10:57

Comment From denny was there a 2nd car damaged in the Mader accident?

10:57

No, it was a single car wreck.

10:59

We’ve always heard the Eddie Mercer is known as “Fast Eddie” around Pensacola, but this week we found out that there is also a nickname for his buddy Scott Carlson.  A sign outside a local business wishes good luck for “Fast Eddie and Smooth Scott”.  It turns out that the sign company where that is out front of is owned by Mercer’s sister who gave Carlson the nickname of “Smooth”.  That was news to Carlson when we told him about the sign, but he got a good chuckle out of it.

10:59

Comment From DebSprintfan Go Ryan Blaney Go !!!

11:00

Comment From Tim is Wayne Anderson there?

11:00

No, Wayne Anderson withdrew his entry.

11:01

The caution is now out for another spin by the #7 of  Shain Cheney.

11:02

We just got word from our boys in the pits that Taylor Satterfield was happy with his car yesterday, but thinks he can get it better.

11:02

The red flag is now out to allow teams to cross over the track.  There will be 30 minutes left in this practice session when it resumes.

11:03

Comment From Mike Scott Alabama Here is the link for times from mylaps.com http://www.mylaps.com/results/showevent.jsp?id=496101

11:03

Bubba Pollard  is changing Ronnie Saunder’s  Super Late Model from #18 to #26 for the Snowball Derby.   He will still run #18 in the Snowflake.

11:06

If you are the type of person who believes in good luck charms, you might be interested to know about Dave Mader, III’s day yesterday.  Mader is well known throughout the pit area for bringing his large bird to the track.  Yesterday, he decided to leave his bird at home at the last minute and ended up wrecking hard in practice.  If he comes back later today, expect the bird in tow for better luck.

11:06

Cars are back on the track and we are about to go back to green flag conditions.

11:06

11:06

11:07

Comment From Todd Practice times?????????

11:07

Practice times will be posted when they are available after the session.  Please stay tuned.

11:07

Comment From Jim rinden, Cambridge Have you seen Ross Kenseth Dad there?

11:07

Matt Kenseth has not been at the track yet, but is said to be headed here later in the weekend.

11:07

11:07

PHOTO: Tim Bryant was sweeping the track this morning, getting it ready for practice.   (51 Sports Photo)

11:07

Comment From Patrick I just emailed SPEED TV to let them know I would like to see the Derby on the air in 2010. There is no other racing on right now. Ratings could be pretty big. If we all ask them politely we may be able to get it done. What do you say Snowball fans?  http://www.speedtv.com/feedback/

11:08

11:08

PHOTO: Cars lined up for practice Friday morning.   (51 Sports Photo)

11:09

We just spoke with Cale Gale while he was strapped in his #14 Derby car on line for practice to resume.   He told us he is very happy with his #83 Snowflake ride. “I wish I was as happy with the Snowball car as I am with that car. It’s just tight in the center and loose off.”

11:10

Comment From Guest Who look like early favorites to take the win this year?

11:10

There are a few dozen guys who have a shot at winning the Snowball Derby, but based on what I’ve seen in practice, I would say right now that a few guys to really watch would be Augie Grill (who has been so relaxed this week, it’s scary), Kyle Busch, Ryan Lawler and Bobby Gill.

11:10

11:10

PHOTO: Brandon Carlson won the Snowball Derby Challenge at Fast Eddie’s last night.   (51 Sports Photo)

11:10

Comment From Guest I am at work about a mile from the track… reading this and literally listening to the cars is GREAT! I used to take Friday off, but this may help me make it through the day!

11:11

DJ Vanderlay looked pretty fast during the first half of the session in his #2 Snowflake car.   They went out early on sticker-tires to make a mock qualifying run.”We never really got a clean lap. The car was real good though. We are a little tight in the center though,” said Vanderlay.

11:11

Comment From Guest hows bobby gill doing in practice

11:11

Comment From Tim How is David Rogers doing?

11:11

Comment From Babbs0824 Still nothing about Randy Gentry 09?

11:11

Comment From donny what about chris horton

11:12

Comment From gerry how is cassius clark running

11:12

Comment From DeMan951 Thank you Speed 51 for your great coverage! How has Beau Slocumb been doing? I was wondering how he held up after 300 laps at the World Crown.

11:12

Practice times will be available after the session is over, please be patient.

11:12

Comment From Mike Scott Alabama I have always wanted Speed TV to show the Snowball even if it is on a tape delayed 30 day delay. I have a DVR. They show the Toyota All Star race and allot of these drivers have driven in that. Only problem I can see is this is the Nascar Banquet week.

11:14

We spoke with Zach Niessner when he was buckled into his #2 Snowflake ride.   Niessner was involved in Thursday’s biggest crash of the day.   He said that the front clip was bent but they think they fixed it enough and were going to use the practice to see if the car was indeed ok to race.   By the looks of it on track, the car is ready to race.

11:15

Comment From Guest Does Ross Kenseth look like he has a shot at this.

11:15

He’s adapted very quickly to this track and although it would be an upset for Ross to win the Derby on his first attempt, he has been extremely impressive in everything he has raced this year….so don’t rule it out.

11:15

Comment From Guest Great coverage!!! Wish I was there!!

11:16

Ross Kenseth looks fast out there.  An observation though… he  is definitely buzzing the right rear tire coming off of turn-four sideways nearly every lap of today’s practice. He’s been exciting to watch

11:17

Ryan Lawler’s car has been sitting on jackstands all morning. Looks like they are happy with their car and content taking practice in.

11:18

Comment From Babbs0824 Wish I could be there to watch all of the action with you guys!!

11:18

Comment From Guest I agree, great coverage!! Now all we need is a Live Cam shots around the track and we are good to go!!

11:20

Dwayne Buggay has looped his #45 coming out of turn four.  He did not hit anything, but the caution is now out.

11:22

Comment From Derek Pernesiglio Great coverage guys. Go 51 Beef O’ Bradys team!

11:22

Comment From Mike Scott Alabama This is the first year I have missed in 10 years and I usually bring my laptop and hook my cam up on Yahoo for my friends to see all the excitement and they are usually shocked.

11:22

Comment From RC ALEXANDER Great coverage!!! Wish I was there!!

11:25

Comment From DD Miserable cold rain here in Cen FL, unfortunately looks like some headed your way for tonite. But the good news is that Sat & Sun look great! Can’t wait!!

11:26

Comment From Billy in Helena Al Do you think that with the low tempature there that it is possible that they might give a warm up lap for qualifying? With as many cars that are spinning out this would sure help with grip

11:26

Teams have been told that they will be allowed to go in turn one on their qualifying run, then run a full “dead” lap and then their two timed laps.  That ought to slightly help build some heat into the tires.  Nevertheless, we still expect to see a few qualifying spins.

11:26

There is a new video entry in Chase Elliott’s Derby Diary.   Check it out.CHASE ELLIOTT DERBY DIARY

11:27

Comment From Jason B Glenn Allen Jr is with Kurt Jett 9 Pro Late Model…………

11:28

Comment From Guest How old is Kenseth’s son? He looks really young.

11:28

Ross Kenseth is 16 years old.

11:29

Eddie Mercer appears to be finished with this practice session.  He is now standing on top of Augie Grill’s hauler, watching the remainder of the session.

11:31

This practice session is completed.  We will have a full rundown of practice times as soon as they are available from Timing and Scoring.

11:32

The Super Stocks will practice next.  Right now, the track is closed for teams to cross over to and from the infield.

11:33

Randy Gentry took the time to talk to Speed51.com while in his car after a run. Gentry told Speed51.com that they have not thrown on stickers yet this morning but plan on it in the next session later today.Gentry told us he is tight in the center of the corner.   He said he adjusted his entry into the turn, taking a higher entry, and it helped the car cut a little better.

11:33

Comment From Bill From Wisconsin Ross is a wheelman for sure!!! Go get em Ross!!!!!!!!!!!!

11:35

Comment From Devyn Who do you think is a favorite to win the Snowflake this year?

11:36

Comment From racefan Who looks like the early favorite to win the Snowflake this year?

11:36

Picking a Snowflake 100 winner is even harder because there are a ton of cars that will be good in that shorter race.  But if I (Speed51.com Editor Mike Twist) had to make a pick right now, I’d go with Johanna Long scoring a popular hometown victory.  She’s looked very good in her Pro Late Model this week.

11:36

Comment From bbm crew tell schoenfeld that the crew at Billy Ballew said to pick it up

11:36

Ross Kenseth was on a stroll through the pits with his snow-hat on. He stopped to talk about his weekend.   Ross said that he is very happy with his car.
We reported earlier that he was buzzing his tires off the turn and coming off sideways. Kenseth smiled and explained that they were on very old tires. They did make a sticker-run yesterday and was very happy with the car.The young driver told us that he likes this track.   “I like how after 15-laps or so, the tires wear. It puts the race into the drivers hands,” said Kenseth.

When asked if FIve Flags Speedway reminds him of anywhere he’s race in the midwest, he said possibly Berlin Raceway.

11:37

Comment From Guest Will you be posting times for Modified practice?

11:37

Probably not, our focus is on the Snowball Derby and Snowflake 100 teams and with over 130 entries for those two races, we will probably be tied up with chasing news from that pit area.

11:37

Comment From race fan is grant enfinger racing this year in the derby?

11:37

We reported earlier about Zach Niessner going back on track for the first time after yesterday’s crash.   We walked by his pit area and Zach gave a thumbs up about the car.

11:37

Yes, he is.

11:38

Comment From Lori Hope Jerrod Foley has a better day of practice today

11:38

They were practicing this morning and after fixing their car, it actually fits the templates better than it did before the wreck yesterday.

11:39

Dave Mader III’s car was taken to the shop after his big crash late in the  practice yesterday.   A crew member told us that the car is toast and will not be returning.   However, there is word that Mader might end up in someone else’s back-up car.   We will do our best to find out if this does happen.

11:39

Comment From Guest How is John Boy doing?

11:39

He was very quick yesterday.  We’ll see how he ends up on the speed chart for today when that is released.

11:39

Korey Ruble’s team is working on the front end of his car.   Someone checked up in front of him on the track and it dinged up his car a slight bit.

11:40

Grant Enfinger was on top of this trailer at the end of practice.   The crew said he must be happy with the car, because he got out and climbed up to watch without saying very much.

11:40

During the practice session, Steve Wallace just about lost it on the race track coming off four, but was able to hold on to it.

11:40

Comment From Mike Scott Alabama I am hoping that Brandon Carlson repeats as Snowflake Champ.

11:40

Comment From slmfan ross is a wheelman he might be tough

11:41

Dennis Reno Jr looks pretty worn out and he hasn’t even hit the track today.”I have two people here helping me, that’s it,” said Reno. “I’ve been busy gettting tires.”

Reno will hit the track for the first time during the 2pm practice.

11:41

Comment From SouthernWindowsDoors3 How does Brandon Odom look in practice. Is JJ BuckSlayer spotting for him?

11:41

Brandon Odom withdrew his Snowball Derby entry and is focusing on his Pro Late Model.  We aren’t sure who is spotting for him.

11:41

Comment From Hoosier for Hantz Good Luck Scott!!

11:42

Comment From Guest how is jimmy garmons car after his radiator issue yesterday

11:42

Garmons has been in and out on the track for practice this morning.

11:43

Comment From Josh Hows Jeff Fultz looking thi morning?

11:43

Jeff is very focused on his car and teammate Tim George’s as well.  They were swapping seats yesterday, so it’s been hard to even tell which car which driver had been practicing.

11:44

Comment From BamaFan Does Augie have a big Bama sticker on his car this year supporting the tide

11:44

Nothing big enough for us to see from the tower.  Then again, they haven’t practiced either #112 yet today.

11:44

Tyler Millwood is one of the drivers pulling double duty running both the Snowflake and Snowball.   He told Speed51.com that his Snowflake car is going great.”We were seventh on the board and that was with 6-month old tires,” said Milwood.

They will head out and make a sticker run soon with the Snowflake car.   They will be making two sticker runs.

Now as far as the Snowball car, he said they are struggling with that car.   The biggest issue they are having is finding forward bite coming off the turns.

11:46

Comment From Dan C hows Eric Holmes adjusting to the Southeast?

11:46

Although Eric Holmes was pre-entered, he does not appear to be running here this weekend.  There are so many cars in the pits though, that even the official scorers are walking around the pit area to double-check to see who actually is here and who isn’t.

11:49

Comment From Drew since rain is possible tonight… if tonights race is rained out when will it be reschduled?

11:49

Comment From Drew If tonights race is rained out when will they be rescheduled?

11:49

A back-up schedule hasn’t been announced.  I think that depends on if and when it starts to rain tonight and what exactly will need to be rescheduled.

11:49

Comment From sportsman12 If Dennis needs more help..I live just 5 miles from the track..race there in sportsman..I’d be glad to help out..if he’s open to it that is…

11:50

Comment From Babbs0824 Thank you for the update on Randy Gentry! Is Johanna Long the only female racing this year?

11:50

Comment From PHILIP I HEARD THERE IS ANOTHER FEMALE DRIVER OTHER THAN JOHANNA LONG. CAN YOU CONFIRM

11:50

Johanna is actually the only female driver on track in the Super Late Model / Pro Late Model ranks this weekend.  Two females withdrew their entries earlier in the week.

11:50

Comment From Guest what class is Ross Kenseth in? has he practiced yet today?

11:50

Ross Kenseth is entered for the Snowball Derby.

11:51

11:52

Comment From Nick I know there are alot of high-dollar teams with the big stacker trailers, but are there any Snowball competitors that have towed in with an open trailer? Just curious.

11:52

11:52

We haven’t seen any SLM teams on open trailers unfortunately.  There are a few cool set-ups with the support divisions though including a cube vans and bread vans with open trailers. It seems that every year, there are more and more toterhomes and big rigs here.  We’re not sure that is a good thing for the sport.

11:52

PHOTO: Jack Kruger backed his #14 into the fence during morning practice. (51 Sports Photo)

11:53

Comment From Drew #93 Has augie practiced any these last couple of days?

11:53

Augie practiced for a little bit yesterday.  He has not been on the track today, but plans to go out in the afternoon sessions.

11:54

Comment From slmfan mike do you get to watch practice??? your so busy answering all of are questions and requests thanks for gret work mike and all of speed51

11:54

I watch some of practice with one eye while typing with the other one, but I miss a lot when it comes to seeing everyone who goes on and off the track.

11:54

Comment From OHIO Is there a entry list of the modifieds anywhere?

11:54

On the Five Flags Speedway website, there are entry lists for each division.

11:57

We have a photo gallery from yesterday up and will post all of the photos that we can from the track today.

11:57

Comment From Sean L. Do you guys have a mobile/phone site or blackberry app that we can follow when away from the PC?

11:57

Not yet, but that is something that we will look into in the future.

12:00

Comment From slmfan amazing how relaxed augie has been….how about choquette dominates world crown 300 gets dqed then goes to the govenors cup is leading and breaks now comes to snowball and is been fast… Have you guys talked to choquette???

12:00

Yes, Jeff Choquette is another favorite for Sunday.  He’s actually nervous about qualifying and making the field – but he has a fast car and he’s very comfortable with it.  Don’t count him out by any means.

12:02

Comment From Guest thank you speed51.com

12:03

Comment From Matt Prieur – Ovid, MI Great coverage guys. Keep up the good work.

12:03

Comment From Debbie Two female drivers from Texas were supposed to race in the Snowflake/Snowball. Both of them withdrew. Kendall Bumbera was one of the drivers – winner of the Texas Super Racing Series (TSRS) Late Model Rookie of the Year. The other was Hannah Baker from Houston Motorsports Park.

12:03

Comment From Guest Wish I was there with you guys! Good luck Bubba and Ryan.

12:03

Comment From Guest Nice to see Brandon Odom & the RJR team sliding their way up to the top of the charts today.

12:03

Comment From Guest choquette can really wheel it

12:05

Comment From Guest How many cars are there

12:05

There are 60 Pro Late Models and 63 Super Late Models.

12:07

Comment From RaceFan Since the comment has been made about Bobby Gill….”there goes half the field”. Guess we can count on the other half to be taken out by Augie….

12:07

Comment From Ben Jones Loving your coverage back in South Texas. Thanks, Ben.

12:07

Comment From Guest you havent said anything about stremme… He still There?

12:07

Yes, he was third quickest in this morning’s Snowball Derby practice session.

12:08

Comment From Guest Good luck to former and current CRA champs; Scott Hantz & Johnny Van Doorn

12:08

Comment From fan here augie.augie augie go getum

12:09

Comment From Guest What’s the difference between a Pro Late Model and Super Late Model. Weight and Engine size?

12:09

The Super Late Model and Pro Late Model cars are very close.  In fact, a few minor changes can “convert” on to the other division.  They even run the same tires here. Their carbs are different – so Pro Late Models have a little bit less horsepower.  Some PLM teams even run crate engines.  There are a few other minor differences, but nothing major.

12:11

Comment From Speedway 660 GREAT coverage guys, from your friends up in New Brunswick, Canada

12:11

Thanks Chris and friends.  If anyone is ever up in the Canadian Maritimes, they need to stop on by Speedway 660 for some great racing.By the way, Travis Kittleson is here and I know that he loves coming up to race the Peterbilt 250 Super Late Model race at 660.

12:11

Comment From Guest I am not sure if this has been asked already, but is there a plan for if any of this weather sets in later on tonight?

12:11

Nothing that has been announced.  It really depends on when and if it starts raining tonight.

12:12

Comment From Guest Unfamiliar with the race, but it isn’t a segmented race correct?

12:12

No, the Snowball Derby is a straight 300-lap race.

12:12

Comment From Guest What is the temp there right NOW?

12:12

It is around 50 degrees.

12:13

Speed51.com just spoke with Johanna Long’s crew chief Freddie Query.   He said that they haven’t put either car on track so far today.Qualifying was one of the big parts of the discussion. Query, like many, think Gary Balough’s track record will be broken tonight.   The weather is cold and that should help.

“The cold weather will have the engines running good and making more power,” said Query.   “Cold weather is good to a point.   If it is too cold it will be hard to get heat in the tires.”

12:14

Comment From Andy Between Stremme and Bobby Gill, I think we can count on there being at least 25 wrecked up racecars.

12:14

Considering that Bobby Gill has already won the Snowball Derby twice and Stremme has won the Winchester 400, I’d have to respectfully disagree with your assessment of their driving talents in a Super Late Model.

12:14

Comment From Eric Hardy How does the number 28 car of Jack Smith look he’s my cousin

12:14

Jack spun yesterday, but he’s been looking pretty racy today.

12:15

Comment From Guest Do you know why kristin Bumbera pulled out?

12:15

No, we do not.

12:16

Bobby Gill has popped into the Speed51.com mobile office here in the infield.   Gill agreed with the Query’s thoughts.   “It took Stremme four laps to run an eighty,” said Gill.He also told us that they made a mock qualifying run today and barely got heat in the tires on his Beef O’ Brady’s #51.

12:16

Comment From SouthernWindowsDoors3 Will there be a list of radio numbers of all the drivers for Snowball and snowflake on your website.

12:16

There is a gentleman who puts together a list of scanner frequencies, but I’m not sure how to contact him.  We do not publish scanner frequencies on Speed51.com.

12:16

Comment From Snarky Looks like Stremme’s gonna take care of the front half and Gill’s gonna take care of the back half.

12:17

Comment From Andy I sure hope Bobby Gill drives a SLM with a cleaner driving style than he drives his Pro Cup car.

12:17

We’re told that Bobby has been following along with Trackside Now this morning… and we’ve seen him mad before and it isn’t pretty.

12:18

Comment From fan can i get a job with you guys. if i get fired from staying on the computer all day

12:18

Maybe Derby Friday ought to be a work holiday.

12:18

12:19

Comment From Rock Did the #99 SLM Brandon Loverock, ever get there, I know he had trouble with the motor in his car hauler.

12:19

We have not seen him here this week.

12:20

Comment From Guest What kind of food will the track be selling this weekend? Hot Chocolate & Coffee?????????

12:20

Yes, there will be plenty of warm drinks at the concession stands this weekend.

12:20

Comment From Duke – BDI Racing Bobby Gill just saw that post and said, “Come here and say that.”

12:20

Comment From Ga.RaceHistory If Mader shows up with his bird, could you get a photo of it? We’re all about lucky birds!

12:21

Comment From jay any web site that shows qual times??

12:22

We will have qualifying coverage live here on Speed51.com tonight – weather permitting of course.

12:22

Wayne Anderson withdrew his Snowball Derby entry earlier this week.  Dick Anderson is not entered as either a car owner or driver.

12:23

Comment From jay any idea what time??

Comment From Tim For scannner freq go to http://www.greatlakesfreq.com/ – click on specials

12:23

Comment From Billy in Helena Al If you get to agressive on this track the odds are against you making 300 laps you will see most drivers like Gill and Grill and even Wallace using their heads to get to the end of this race

12:24

Comment From slm77 Coverage is great. Please leave out all this opinions of drivers not nessary. Thanks

12:24

Good idea.  We’ve had some fun during a bit of downtime here on the track, but let’s all keep things civil from here folks.

12:24

Comment From mitchell2448 Go Eddie Mercer

12:24

Comment From Guest have the mods practiced if they have do you have any times?

12:25

Comment From Chris, AL When do the modifieds practice? any word on how many are there?

12:25

The Modifieds are doing their pace laps for their first practice session right now.

12:25

Comment From Matt Prieur – Ovid, MI For the Scanner Question, that is Lou McMurray at the Great Lakes Scanner Frequency Guide. www.greatlakesfreq.com Not sure if he has Snowball Derby and Snowflake frequencies.

12:25

Comment From nf32 good luck colangelo !!

12:29

We have looked into the relationship between the #16 Super Late Model of Brian Scott and the Kyle Busch Motorsports team.  It turns out that the #16 is a fourth car out of the KBM shops.  It was towed to the track in Scott’s NASCAR Truck Series hauler and the team is using Scott’s Truck Series pit equipment to service the car this week.  They are parked in a different part of the pit area from the KBM posse, but have lined things up so the team camps are a direct, and fairly short, walk from one to the other.

12:29

Comment From Tom Gula Have the modifieds practiced yet?

12:29

Not at speed, they are still doing pace laps.

12:31

Yesterday, there was some debate as to whether Ryan Crane is truly from Georgia or Florida, so we got the scoop.  Crane grew up in Georgia and did in fact graduate from high school there.  Then he moved with his family to the Panama City, Florida area.

12:31

Comment From RaceFan The only way half the field will be out due to Bobby Gill will be that they are all behind him….

12:33

Comment From Tom Gula Do I have to regester to get posted?

12:33

You shouldn’t have to.  Fans should be able to ask questions whether they are signed in or a guest.  However, we have been getting so many questions that we haven’t been able to keep up with answering them all.

12:36

We have just become aware of a server issue with the program that we use to bring you interactive Trackside Now.  Their servers are rebooting and hopefully things will be fixed shortly.  But for now, new Trackside Now viewers may be seeing a black screen when they log in.  If you are reading this now, you probably won’t have that problem – so don’t log out and keep reading along today.Hopefully, this problem will be fixed shortly.

12:46

Comment From Guest how can i see the modified prac times/

12:46

Later this afternoon, the track should have those posted to Mylaps.com.  Right now, the session is still going on.

12:48

Dave Mader III left his bird at home this year.   Although he might need to re-consider and bring his good luck charm next time after the day he had yesterday.

12:50

Editors Note:
The Photo of the spotter from before was Tom Busch. He’s spotting for his son Kyle.

12:56

Comment From G17 Regarding the big rig comments before… When i was a small kid (mid 80s) here in Pensacola my Dad would take us around at night to all the hotels and we would ride through and check out all the racecars on open trailers and see crews out working on them. Don’t get to do that anymore! Cool Memories of the Derby!

12:56

I grew up doing a lot of those same things in New England.  Seeing a big white trailer just doesn’t seem as magical, does it?

12:56

Comment From Billy Is there any word on Maders chances on a back up ride?

12:56

We have not seen him around the track yet today, so things aren’t looking so good for that to happen.

12:56

Comment From AJ Do you guys have a photo of the BDI #51 hood with all the names on it, or are you going to keep us in suspense? 🙂

12:57

We will try to get a photo of the hood up shortly.  Good idea.

There has been some sad news here this Snowball Derby week.  On Wednesday night, Rhonda D. McGinnis lost her life in a Georgia traffic accident. McGinnis was 48 years old and has connections to the Derby.  Her father, Billy McGinnis raced in the Derby many times and is a previous winner of the Rattler 250 at South Alabama Speedway.  Her brother-in-law, David Hole, was entered in the Snowball Derby and Snowflake 100 this year, but loaded up and went home after receiving news of the accident.Speed51.com sends out thoughts and prayers out to the McInnis and Hole families.

1:13

Comment From Guest that’s very sad to hear. Prayers sent out to her family.

1:15

Snowball Derby practice is now underway, but it is under a red flag for a hard wreck in turn one by the yellow #29 of Andy Loden.  He backed into the outside wall and the car sustained heavy rear end damage.  Loden appears to be fine though.

1:15

Comment From Texas Race Fan Prayers are with the family

1:17

Comment From Ga.RaceHistory Thoughts and prayers are with David and his familiy.

1:21

We’ll be under a red flag for a little bit as Andy Loden’s #29 is loaded on to a flatbed wrecker.

1:24

Comment From TJ Reaid Thanks speed 51 for the great coverage, keep it up!

1:24

Folks, that is actually TJ Reaid.   We checked in with him via cell phone and he is watching our coverage from the infield.Reaid said they made some changes to the car and think they will be pretty good.   They are about to go out here soon to make a mock qualifying run.

1:26

Max Gresham is sitting this practice session out.   He said he turned a fast lap in the previous session, so he doesn’t need to go out now.

1:27

Comment From Guest will you be doning updating during qualifying tonnight and when does the snow flake car qulify

1:27

Yes, we will be covering Snowball Derby qualifying live tonight, weather permitting of course.  The Snowflake 100 qualifying is tomorrow.

1:28

Comment From Guest Is the sunday derby on any tv stations?

1:28

It is not a televised race, although we would expect that local television stations in the Pensacola area would show highlights on their sports broadcasts.

1:30

Ted Baber Video Productions has been here about seven years, recording the Derby.     About a week after the Derby weekend, you can order your copy on DVD   by   contacting Ted Baber at   [email protected].     The Derby video is   $45   and the Snowflake 100 is   $35.     Support   division videos are also available and there is a package deal   if you order all races.

1:30

Comment From src5 Will you be posting the Modified times? Or at least maybe the top 3?

1:30

The track will have practice results on MyLaps.com.

1:31

Comment From niteowl078 What about something like the B2 networks could cover the race I’m sure it would be a hit…not everyone can make it out to the track…and if they did good luck finding a parking space.

1:32

We now have over 2,500 viewers for our Trackside Now coverage today.  Thank you all for checking in!

1:33

A few crew members for the PASS North team of Travis Benjamin have made the trip to Pensacola this year and are helping out the Snowball Derby team of Brian Scott.

1:33

Most of the Speed 51 staff are all now here, but our fearless leader Bob Dillner is not – yet.   He is out in Las Vegas (NV) during the NASCAR banquet weekend.   He will be flying back here though for the Derby, and to hopefully watch his BDI #51 car with Bobby Gill in the Derby itself.

1:35

James Kimborough has something cool on his #37 machine.  The rear “TV” panel has names of the members of his fan club printed on it.

1:35

Comment From Dan c Travis Benjamins cousin spots for Brian Scott doesn’t he?

1:35

I believe you are correct.

1:35

Comment From TJ Reaid You guys gonna post some pics up from the go-kart race last night?

1:35

We have some posted in the photo gallery from last night on the Speed 51 facebook page at www.facebook.com/speed51

1:37

We have over 2500 people watching our coverage so far today.   We want to thank every one of you for following along with our coverage.

1:37

Cassius Clark isn’t looking too good this week, but that has nothing to do with the performance of his racecar.  Clark got hit in the face with a three-quarter inch wrench while preparing for the Derby.  A crew member was working on the track bar and it slipped – flying into Clark.  Cassius is now sporting a heavily bruised and swollen lip as a result.

1:37

Comment From Big Mike I live about 2 miles from the track and have been going to the derby for about 30 years and the coverage is now great. I believe that this is a premire event and it should be on television. Great Job Speed 51

1:38

Thank you.  We are also very impressed with the community support for this race and enjoy coming here each year.

1:39

Comment From Ryan “statboy” Daley The wrap looks great on Bobby Gill’s car! Wrap is by Grafix Unlimited in Raleigh, NC

1:39

That is our back-up Stat Boy.

1:39

Comment From Babbs0824 Thank you Speed51 for your awesome coverage

1:41

Comment From brad parrott hows the nascar bunch doing in practice

1:41

In this morning’s practice session, Stremme was third quickest, Kyle Busch was fifth quickest, Steve Wallace was 16th quickest and Chase Elliott was 22nd quickest.  We don’t have any up-to-date results from the current session yet.  Thanks for following along!

1:41

Jerry Artuso just spun his #5 GARC machine around in three and four, but didn’t appear to hit anything and continued on.

1:42

The caution is out again for a hard hit in turn three by Cassius Clark.  His car is heavily damage.  His window net is down and Cassius appears to be okay.

1:44

Cassius Clark hit the outside wall in turn three with the right side of his #8 machine.  There is heavy damage to the right front and from here, it looks like it might be too much to repair at the track.

1:45

Comment From Greg If this is live can you tell us if anyone is having trouble in tech, or anything related to the current activity at the track?

1:45

The tech line for Snowball Derby teams closed at Noon.  There were no major incidents in tech for the Derby and Snowflake teams yet this week.

1:45

Comment From Billy Thank you for the fine coverage.I used my last bit of vacation going to the Memphis ASA race so I have to wait untill tomorrow to come down.Your crew makes it much easier letting everyone know whats going on down there.

1:45

Comment From 28 racer no, thank you speed 51!

1:45

Comment From fred23 Damn Canadians……JK Jerry is a great guy

1:46

Comment From Beepsi Are they qualifying now or just practicing?  [email protected]

1:46

Just practice.  Qualifying is set for 6pm CT tonight.

1:46

Comment From guest what happened to the 8

1:47

From the way that he hit the wall, I suspect that either a tire went down or something broke going into turn three.  We’ll find out from Cassius when we catch up with him.

1:48

Cassius Clark’s car is being towed back to its pit stall right now.  A regular-style wrecker was able to be used instead of a flatbed that was dispatched, but the car is heavily damaged.  All of the bodywork from the bumper to midway up the door has been ripped away and we don’t even want to guess what damage lies underneath.

1:49

Comment From fred23 Can you get practice times? Mylaps is only showing yesterdays stuff!

1:49

Practice times from this morning’s Snowball and Snowflake practices are listed below.  You can scroll down for full results.

1:50

Comment From Mr. Whipple will look forward to those quotes from the Maine native. So, do they all have to race their way into this thing through heats and consis, or just time trials and the fast guys start up front? I know, I need a Derby history lesson.

1:50

The top 30 are set by straight up qualifying, the next six starters come from a B-Main and then there are two provisionals for Blizzard Series regulars and (if needed) a Previous Winner’s provisional.

1:51

Cassius Clark walked back to his pit area under his own power and without a limp.  Despite a hard wreck, he is okay.

1:51

Practice has resumed for the Snowball Derby cars.

1:51

Comment From fred23 How many cars do they lock in from qualifying tonight?

1:51

30 cars are locked in after tonight’s qualifying session.

1:52

Comment From Jon H Shoutout to Ryan “statboy” Daley and Grafix Unlimited and to speed51 on the snowball coverage. from up here in IL. Go Ross!!

1:53

Comment From Steve How many drivers are pulling the double and attempting both races?

1:53

Bubba Pollard, Johanna Long, Kyle Busch and John Bolen are a few drivers who are running both the Snowball Derby and Snowflake 100.

1:53

Cassius Clark’s car is toast.   The crew is looking at it now in the infield.   Cassius spoke with us on video. We will start putting that together soon.

1:54

We have just received word that Ross Kenseth has just set a new unofficial track record with his #25 Super Late Model.  For it to officially count, he’ll need to back it up in qualifying tonight.

1:54

Bobby Gill and his crew are a little happier now.   They botled on stickers and a team member smiled and said it was “much better.”   Bobby on the other hand is never as satisfied. He said it ran faster when the tires had 10-laps on them.   “It’s too cold,” Gill said.

1:56

Comment From GUEST WHAT WAS ROSS TIME

1:56

16.603 seconds.

1:58

Augie Grill is now about to hit the track.  He hasn’t practiced much this week at all yet.

1:59

Comment From Dan C Will Clark run one of Fultz’s back up cars ?

1:59

Well, that could be a possibility.  Clark maintains his PASS South car at Fultz’s shop in Mooresville, North Carolina so they are teammates.Clark and his father Billy tow to the track with just a pick-up truck and enclosed trailer.  They do not bring a back-up car to the track.

1:59

Comment From steve what is fast time at the track in think it was in 1980 but what and who?????????

1:59

Gary Balough set the track record in 1980 with the infamous “Batmobile”.

2:00

Brian Icker, who had such a great run at the Derby last year, is still searching for the set-up on his NOS Energy #15 car.   Unlike most teams in this final session before qualifying, “Ike” did not go out on sticker-tires.  They are searching for the feel he wants on old stuff.

2:02

Comment From Guest_11 i thought the track record was 16.33

2:02

We looked into that and actually, that gets a bit confusing.  The track record that Ross Kenseth broke is considered the track record after the days of legal tire soaking. That is 16.629 and was set by Grant Enfinger in a Super Late Model.  It is what the Five Flags Speedway website considers to be the track record for this event.

2:03

The final pre-qualifying practice session for the Snowball Derby entrants is now complete.  There were 41 cars that broke into the 16-second bracket.  We’ll have a full rundown shortly.

2:04

Korey Ruble will not be bolting on sticker-tires in the next Snowflake session. Most teams probably will be trying to make some mock-qualifying runs.   Ruble put on stickers yesterday and drug the cross-member on the track pretty bad.   He said they besides that they were pretty satisfied with the car.

2:04

Comment From LeadSeventeen TJ, Get off the phone!!! Pay attention to your car babe and you’l be there when you need to be. 😉 Good Luck!

2:08

Comment From chase1 any predictions on who will sit on the pole tonight??? my money is on the #33 of choquette

2:08

I won’t even take a guess on that.  But Jeff Choquette will definately be a contender.  The funny thing is that when we talked to Choquette at length yesterday, he was nervous about even making the race.  Then again, this is the Derby and anything can happen.

2:08

Comment From E.B. how’s ross kenseth doing?

2:09

He just set an unofficial track record for Super Late Models.

2:09

There has been a big wreck in turn one for the Snowflake 100 practice in turn one.  The red flag is out.

2:11

Several cars were involved in this wreck.  Ryan Blaney drove away and two cars are still parked up against the outside retaining wall.  Those cars belong to Jake Kruger and Jeff Godwin.

2:11

Comment From guest im new to following the derby. can you tell me the break down of the race. is it 300 laps with pit stops. or is it run similar to asa with breaks after each 100

2:12

There are no segment breaks in the Snowball Derby.  It is a straight-up 300 lap run.

2:12

Comment From Greg I would not count out Chase Elliott for the pole. He has been qualifying up front of late and was even on the pole for the north-south shootout, i believe.

2:12

Comment From brad parrott hows the chicken car(ZAXBY’S)running, anyone from RCR down there helping him learn the track?

2:12

No, John Wes Townley withdrew from the event earlier this week.

2:13

Jeff Godwin is being towed off the track right now.  A flatbed is going to be needed for Jake Kruger’s damaged car.

2:13

Comment From Dan c My pole predication- Ryan Lawler.

2:14

Comment From CODY51 Is there always this many wrecks in practice?

2:14

The cool weather seems to be making things worse this year, although there is always a fair amount of equipment torn up in practice for these events.

2:14

Comment From guest Did they get #2 Zach Niessner’s car repaired from the wreck in practice

2:14

Yes, he practiced this morning.

2:14

Comment From Guest How bad is Jake Krugers car?

2:14

It looks pretty bad from here in the tower.

2:15

2:16

Of all the Super Late Models to take to the track during that practice, Johanna Long and John Bolen both turned the most laps – 22.

2:17

Comment From Guest Is Kruger’s car repairable?

2:17

Right now, it is still being towed back to the pits on the back of a flatbed truck.  But things don’t look good.

2:17

Ryan Blaney pulled away from the latest incident. His team is currently surveying the damage in the pits. Besides a little scuff mark on the right front of the car, it appears there might not be too much damage. The tow might be knocked in a little.

2:17

Comment From g22 damn, you could throw a blanket over the top 40 cars – they are so close – mess up your q laps at all and you are done

2:18

Comment From Big Mike thats the way it is almost every year about a second from pole to last

2:18

Comment From Guest wow

2:19

Comment From tom looks like the michigan boys are doing good

2:19

Comment From Big Mike another reason it the race it is.

2:19

All three drivers from this practice crash report that they are ok.   Jeff Godwin said his spotter cleared him, and when he went into the corner, a car dove in quick (Jake Kruger), and his spotter keyed the mic to tell him a car was low, but it was already too late as he was making his entrance into the corner.Godwin is not saying they are done, but they are pretty banged up.

2:20

For the first time today, the sun has come out over the track.

2:21

Johanna Long is not too happy.   They were never able to get a mock qualifying run in during that session.   However, they think they will be ok during qualifying.

2:22

The red flag is still out, but there are 32 cars lined up to go out and practice when the track goes back to green.  Some of them may have to wait quite some time.

2:23

Comment From Guest how long do you think it will take to run 300 laps, We want to try to schedule a flight out right after the race?

2:24

It all depends on the number of cautions and traffic to get out of the track is very heavy.  I wouldn’t try to catch any flight out of town until Monday morning if I were you.

2:25

Comment From Guest I just got word that the 14 was Bubba Nauman not Jake Kruger

2:25

You are correct.  Both #14 cars are black and from Texas and we made a mistake on the ID there.

2:26

Max Gresham, who was second fastest in this morning’s practice, elected to limit his participation in this afternoon’s session to only three laps as they are satisfied with the car.

2:27

Moods have brightened quite a bit down here in the pits. The sun finally coming out and shining bright  is the reason.

2:27

If you are just joining our coverage today, make sure to scroll back through all of the coverage from today for practice times and updates from the whole day’s action.

2:28

Comment From HEDMAN HUSLER HEDDERS SPEED51 THANK YOU… FOR THE GREAT JOB YOU GUYS DO FROMT HOSE OF US WHO ARE AT WORK. WE’LL SEE YOU GUYS TOMARROW.

2:29

Comment From Bob B Any word on Loden?

2:29

No, we attempted to find out after his wreck but the team was too busy to talk to us.

2:29

Although they feel they are making strides with their car, Chase Elliott has been a little under the weather this weekend with strep throat. If you want to see what Elliott has said about his weekend thus far, check out his Derby Diary:

http://www.speed51.com/2009_Stories/Snowball/Derby_Diary_Chase_Elliott.html

2:30

The #05 of Jeremy Colangelo feels that combining all that they’ve learned here by running the Blizzard Series season will culminate in a strong qualifying run here tonight.

2:30

Comment From Debbie has just confirmed that it was Bubba Naumann in the #14 that was involved. I’m trying to find out more about the damages now.

2:30

Comment From Greg Strep huh? Poor kid : (

2:31

Comment From Guest Thanks Debbie. How are the other Texas guys doing?

2:34

Jason Young is fairly certain that his #27 will bounce back from their sub-par practice runs this weekend and are taking it all in and doing all they can to “make something happen” this weekend.

2:37

Comment From jfrank Are you going to post the qualiflying line up?

2:38

Comment From SouthernWindowsDoors3 Do scouts for Nascar teams look for talent at a race like this. If so what names do you think they would be watching? Anybody had a great year with a lot of wins?

2:38

Sadly, not enough.Johanna Long is probably the most likely one here to be watched.  She’s young, she’s talented and she is possibly the best female driver in the country right now.  Maybe she would even be a better choice than Danica Patrick in NASCAR right now.

Chase Elliott’s stock is rising too.  He just turned 14 and won some big races this year.  Ross Kenseth has been extremely impressive this year too.  Ryan Blaney is another really good second generation driver.

Josh Hamner deserves consideration for a big league ride and so does Jeff Choquette.  John Bolen and Hunter Robbins are really good too.  After the year that Bubba Pollard has had, he should be looked at.  Casey Smith, Beau Slocumb and Ryan Lawler are very good too.

Honestly, there isn’t enough room here for all of the names of talented young drivers who a scout should look at this weekend.

2:38

Tyler Millwood, who has two #31 machines entered this weekend in both the Snowflake 100 and the Snowball Derby, is standing up to the challenge and knows that they will have a lot of work too, but will approach each race with as much confidence as possible.   Millwood says his car for the Derby needs a few adjustments but they will be fine come tonight.

2:39

Comment From Guest Zaxby’s late model race team was sold the day before Thanksgiving and the shop closed. That’s why JW Townley’s not in the race.

2:39

The caution is out for debris on the track.

2:42

Comment From TS /i hear that ROSS KENSETH has “unofficial” track record, fastest in practice, beat track record in practice – needs to back it up in qual. What was his time? what is the official track record?

2:42

Yes, he did.  The full story is listed a little bit below here, so please scroll on down.

2:43

Comment From Guest do they roll for invert or start staight up

2:43

They start straight up.

2:43

James Kimbrough spun off turn four just now, but didn’t hit anything and has driven away.

2:43

Comment From John Kenseth is fast which is no suprise. And I would say he has a very goood qualifying draw too!

2:43

Grant Enfinger says his car is good, but he probobly will not be a pole contender for tonight.   He also said that the last time he checked the pole didn’t pay $20,000 to win.

2:47

Comment From Sebastian I thought Eddie Mac was racing

2:47

No, Eddie MacDonald would be a great addition to this race but he doesn’t get to do much Super Late Model racing.

2:47

Comment From bgf2 just wanted to say my family and i will be praying for the McInnis & Hole families – very sorry for your loss.

2:47

Comment From Debbie Bubba Naumann (PLM #14) broke his nose following the practice wreck. After taking his steering wheel off, he tossed in the dash. It bounced back and hit him in his face.

2:48

Comment From Joe Lookin at kenseths times through out the weekend, maybe those new spindles are better than the old! haha

2:48

Comment From AJF TS – look at teh 2:15 time entry and the 2:00 entry for the answers to your questions.

2:48

Comment From AJF How long will no cars be on the track before qualifying begins? What is the air temp?

2:48

Qualifying is scheduled to start at 6pm CT.

2:48

Comment From TS i just logged in, see the practice time run down, but not the story. What is the current track “official” track record. I am trying to find out to send it to someone at the track’

2:49

Comment From Dan C Is the race on racetalkradio ? If so, are they broadcasting live at the track(do they have a race frequecy?)

2:49

The Snowflake 100 and Snowball Derby will be broadcast on RaceTalkRadio and most likely on a frequency at the track as well.  We hopefully will have more news on that tomorrow.  Stay tuned.

2:50

Comment From Guest any cheaters yet

2:50

Probably.  But they’ve been good enough not to get caught.

2:50

We have had over 3100 people thus far today watching our coverage.   Thank you to all.

2:50

Snowflake 100 practice is now complete.

2:50

Comment From bgf2 thanks for all the AMAZING coverage !!!!! sadly, this will be only my 3rd Derby to ever miss.

2:52

Comment From Guest how many cars start the snow flake and snowball race

2:52

There will be 38 or 39 cars starting the Snowball Derby depending on if a past winner’s provisional is needed.  Snowflake 100 qualifying is tomorrow and they will most likely explain the full starting procedure in tomorrow morning’s drivers’ meeting, but expect a similar-sized field.

2:52

Comment From TS found the list. Hopefully Ross can get that track record!!!!

2:53

Comment From Sebastian Doesn’t kyle busch have an awards banquet later today

2:53

Johnny VanDoorn was next to qualify and was on the track coming up to speed when he lost control and hit the wall between turns three and four.   His car appears to be damaged extensively.   We do not think he has a back-up car.   This is a tough break for VanDoorn, who wasn’t initially planning on coming down here for the event, but got some sponsorship that allowed him to make the trip down from the midwest.

21 Scott Carlson 16.827 16.738 16.738

30 cars have qualified, which means the bumping process will start.   Only the top 30 lock themselves into the Snowball Derby based on time.   The rest of the field will be determined by four drivers from the last-chance race (this is a change we just found out about a short bit ago – it was six), two provisionals from the Blizzard Series, and the last spot is for the most recent past champion, which would be 37 spots.

The Modified race hasn’t even started yet.  We won’t be able to give the event full coverage, but full results will be available on the track website and Mylaps.com tomorrow.

9:27

Comment From guest Thanks FL RACER for clarifying that, well said.

9:27

Comment From mike cheating is cheating either way u look at it

9:29

Here is a clarification – the #25 car of Ross Kenseth was never accused of cheating.  During pre-practice technical inspection, the spindles were determined by the tech crew to be something that they didn’t want to be used here due to questions as to their strength on this high banked track.  The team and the tech crew worked together and Kenseth was allowed to practice with the spindles while new ones were made of steel and shipped down from Wisconsin.  The team put those on before qualifying. Those spindles are allowed up in the Midwest and the team used them all year.  They weren’t “illegal”, they just were not approved to run here this weekend.

9:29

Comment From FL Racer Do you race???? obviously not all u people think is oo there winning there cheating guess what richard petty said it a long time ago if 30 cars made the race theres 30 cheaters in one way or another..

9:29

9:31

Dillon Oliver is entered in tomorrow’s Snowflake 100.  Qualifying for that race takes place tomorrow and tonight was all about Snowball Derby qualifying.  Oliver has been fast in practice and should be a threat for the pole.

9:31

Comment From Guy Vandoorns team are done, needs a clip and will not start last chance race ……

Comment From hedman husles thank you very much… well see ya there in the afternoon … greatv job as always SPEED 51.

9:32

Comment From Lonnie Yes- Rick is a true racer, and an all-around GREAT guy. Not to mention- he is a pretty good race driver as well! LOLOL

9:32

We want to clarify some times difference between our timing and scoring numbers and the ones on mylaps.   The official system and the system the computer uses that uploads to mylaps can be a few thousands off due to using two different timing loops on the front stretch.   From what we have been told, the times that we have posted from the scoring are the correct ones used.   So, while mylaps shows Johanna Long’s time of 16.465, it is actually 16.463, which is from the official timing and scoring loop.

9:33

Comment From denny wow, there are some really, really big names who will have to race their way in…
