Yesterday was parking and tech day here at Five Flags Speedway, and there was a lot happening.   If you missed our coverage, visit the link below:http://www.speed51.com/2009_Stories/Snowball/Trackside_Now_Derby_12-2.html

We will have more news and notes from yesterday here shortly.

8:51

One driver that was here yesterday that will unfortunately not be here today is David Hole.   We found out this morning that Hole had a death in the family, and has withdrawn from the entire weekend’s events to head home and be with family and friends. The entire Speed 51 staff offers condolences to Hole and his family.

8:53

As we left you last night, technical inspection was still going on for the Snowball Derby.  It continued on until 10:45pm CT and more teams will go through the tech room this morning. One of the biggest problems belonged to the #25 team of Ross Kenseth.  The tech crew did not like the spindles that were on Kenseth’s car and new spindles are being built in their Wisconsin shop to put on the car for the race.  Speed 51 Video caught up with the team last night and we’ll have a video about it shortly.  This morning, we have been told that Kenseth will be allowed to practice on his current spindles until the new ones arrive.  He just will need to new ones to qualify and race.

Otherwise, there was a “lot of cutting and grinding going on” in the tech area as described by one crew member.  Most of the adjustments were minor – Bobby Measmer, Jr.’s #14 Racing Electronics team needs to get their nose over one inch for example (which they did with the help of a Port-a-Power) and the #51 Chevrolet of Bobby Gill had to adjust their rear quarter panel heights.  Those adjustments were typical throughout the pit area and we’ll have more on what different teams had to do later this morning.

8:55

The two-time defending winner of the Snowball Derby, Augie Grill, is here today.  Grill’s toterhome rolled into the track this morning.  Right now, it is parked in the pit area but the gate hasn’t been put down and nothing has been unloaded.  Grill’s team worked on their Derby and Snowflake cars right up until the last minute at their Alabama shop.

8:56

Video from Speed51Video.com: Ross Kenseth’s Car in Trouble in Tech:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FbYJU6TKqvA

8:58

Currently, the Bomber and Sportsman haulers are rolling into the speedway.  The choice of tow rigs in this type of grassroots racing is varied.  We see a toterhome in line and right behind it is a half-ton Chevy pick-up with an open trailer.  There’s even one racecar hooked up to a trailer behind the family SUV (a Ford Expedition) and an old bread van towing a trailer.

9:00

Comment From dragracer Is Matt Kenseth in Pensacola with his son Ross?

9:01

We have not seen Matt Kenseth here yet, but we suppose that he might be here later in the weekend.

9:01

Video from Speed51Video.com: David Rogers on Parking Day here at Five Flags Speedway:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ej1mcI2FsRA

9:03

For those of you who have not been to Five Flags Speedway for the Snowball Derby, it is hard to describe just how big this race is.  For example, this morning while watching the local news, we saw commercials for both the Snowball Derby and the Allen Turner Hyundai Snowflake 100 on the television.  How many people out there can say that their local short track advertises that heavily?

9:05

The community really gets behind their local Snowball Derby heroes too.  On Tuesday night, Johanna Long politely declined an invitation to appear on our Speed 51 Radio show due to a prior commitment.  That commitment?  She appeared before Pensacola business leaders to appear on a local Rotary Club meeting.

9:12

The driver’s meeting is happening down by the tech shed.

9:25

Comment From Clyde Millman Good luck Bob and Kevin wish I could be there.

9:25

Comment From Dan Speed51 not only makes those of us who can’t be at the derby feel like we are there with awesome coverage, they even sent us some warm weather for the full effect! it’s 10am, Dec. 3rd and it’s 65 degrees up here in MA. Thanks guys!!!

9:30

Cale Gale was one of several driver said to have some issues going through tech last night. Gale’s machine was a little low on roof-height. They are in the tech line again this morning.

9:55

Getting one car through the tough technical inspection here is an accomplishment, so imagine having three cars that need to roll through tech.  That is what Bubba Pollard had to do last night with his two Super Late Models and his Snowflake 100 Pro Late Model entry.  Pollard reports that it wasn’t too bad though, except for a few minor changes, they passed without problem.

9:57

In the drivers’ meeting, tech head Ricky Brooks told teams that anything that was found in tech yesterday needs to be fixed in time for qualifying.  They’ll have today to get back through the tech line and tomorrow up until Noon.  Otherwise, Brooks said “we have too many cars here to babysit you” and it will be up to the teams to be legal for their qualifying laps.

9:58

Snowball Derby teams were told in the drivers’ meeting that starting at 4pm today, they will be able to pick out four tires for tomorrow night’s qualifying session.  They will be allowed to pick out tires in the order of their qualifying draw.

9:58

Comment From dragracer Why did Bubba Pollard have two Super Late Models in tech? Who’s driving the second Super Late Model for him?

10:00

Just Bubba – it is his back-up car and he was getting it all ready to roll.Earlier this season though, Pollard did let Ben Rowe drive his back-up car in a PASS South race.  It would sure be interesting to see Rowe getting behind the wheel for the Snowball Derby.  But before we start any rumors, he’s not even in Pensacola this week so that was just wishful thinking.

10:01

Comment From Flyin Brian Doherty Is there any sort of ‘Plan B’ in place incase tomorrows action is affected by rain?

10:01

Nothing was mentioned at the drivers’ meeting about a back-up plan in case of rain tomorrow night.

10:02

We are just a few moments from the start practice.

10:04

The rain from Tuesday and Wednesday morning is still a bit of an issue today.  Right now, teams are cleaning mud off turns three and four after it was tracked in by some haulers this morning. The dirt pit areas for the Bomber and Sportsman teams is still a bit of a muddy mess too.  Race Director Dan Spence, Sr. told the Derby teams today to “be kind to the Sportsman and Bomber teams today because they’ll probably be standing ankle deep in mud for most of the day and we’ll be pulling them out of the pits with wreckers around Midnight tonight.”

10:04

Comment From West Michigan Got any pics. of Tom Thomas or Johnny Van Doorn’s Car

10:06

Not yet.  Practice is about to start shortly and after that we’ll be taking photos of various cars on the track.  We’ll also going to be narrowly down the nominees for the Best Appearing Car award as voted on by Speed51.com fans.  Van Doorn’s paint scheme is very unique, so that is likely to one of the nominees.  Stay tuned.

10:07

Practice will start in just a few moments and there are already 10 Super Late Models lined up at the end of pit road to hit the track.

10:08

Augie Grill ended up getting to the track around 9:30pm last night after working on his car until the last minute in his shop yesterday.  This morning, he was walking around the pits with a bottle of Mountain Dew to help jump-start him early in the morning.A team member told Speed51.com that they never rush and might only run one lap today in practice.  Since they’ve won the last two Snowball Derbys, they might not need much practice time.

10:10

Cars are on the track under caution to get ready for practice.  The first car in line is the #25 of Ross Kenseth.

10:11

It didn’t take long for the first caution to come out in practice.  After about three low-speed warm-up laps, Jared Foley spun his #04 into the inside wall in turn one.  A wrecker has been dispatched and we’ll be under caution for a little while longer.

10:12

All of the Super Late Model/Pro Late Model practices today will be combination sessions where Snowball Derby and Snowflake 100 cars will both be allowed on the track.  Tomorrow, there will be some dedicated practice sessions for each race.

10:13

Comment From NC Jack Nothing like the smell of high octane exhaust in the morning! Thanks Speed51 for making it seem like I’m there – sure wish I could be.

10:14

The green flag has just come out for practice with Johnny Van Doorn, Jeremy Colangelo and Ross Kenseth being the first drivers to get going.

10:14

Comment From SPENCE WERE IS CLAY ALEXANDER

10:14

Right now, Clay Alexander is making practice laps with his #84 machine.

10:17

10:17

PHOTO: Jerrod Foley wrecked in turn one before taking the green flag in practice.   (51 Sports Photo)

10:17

Jerrod Foley was very upset about the wreck.   They are going to look at the damage, but things don’t look great as of now.   We will continue to follow their progress.

10:17

Comment From Brandon Thanks Speed51 for all the coverage, Cant wait to be down there Saturday morning. Hopefully rain holds off

10:17

Comment From Guest Is Clay related to Mike? Same number that Mike used to use.

10:18

Clay, also known as Mike Alexander, Jr., is Mike Alexander’s son.  Like his father always did, he runs the #84.

10:18

Comment From Doodle Bryant GO RYAN CRANE !!!!!!!!!! where is he now?

10:19

We’re not sure where Ryan is, but his car is sitting on pit road behind its hauler without anyone working on it.

10:20

Comment From David Hicken great job speed 51, i would like to see photos from around the pits.we are watching from prince edward island. canada

10:20

Thanks for logging in up in PEI – great potatoes and red sand up there!.  We’ll have plenty of pitside photos all weekend long.

10:20

The caution is out for debris on the racetrack right now.

10:21

Comment From Brandon Hopefully Chase Elliott can bring the Trophy back to North GA. Does it look like hes about to roll out?

10:21

Chase Elliott was in the first group of about a dozen cars to hit the track.  They didn’t waste anytime getting him going this morning.

10:21

To put a period on the Jerrod Foley situation, his wreck wasn’t caused by another car.   It appears it was just caused by cold tires.

10:21

Comment From Steven (CA) Watching from Sacramento, CA do you guys have any news on any of the California teams? I know you guys don’t cover California but it’s pretty cool to have four SLM guys from CA there with Ickler, Loverock, McCray, and Holmes.

10:23

It’s great to see some West Coast entries here this weekend.  We’re pretty sure that Eric Holmes has been renumbered as #167 as Jeff Fultz’s teammate.  Brian Ickler is down in the Kyle Busch Motorsports camp this morning, but none of those KBM machines have hit the track yet.

10:24

Comment From Colleen Choquette Just curious, where Jeff Choquette #33 is ??

10:24

Jef Choquette was at the drivers’ meeting.  We’re not sure if he is running a Fountain Motorsports car or his own car, but we’ll find out.

10:25

To answer a previous question, the #33 Fountain Motorsports Super Late Model of Jeff Choquette has just rolled down pit road and onto the track for practice.

10:25

Comment From Jake92 Thanks for all of the info. I haven’t heard how many cars are there though….. Last night, I noticed at least 10 that weren’t on the entry list.

10:25

We checked with timing and scoring.   We do not have a list of names or a total car count as of yet.   We are working on that and will hope to have times from the practice sessions as well.   We were told as a guess around 66 cars per division (Super and Pro).

10:26

Comment From mccann jr has any of the jeff fultz racecars hit the track yet..fultz, tim george or cassius clark?

10:26

Jeff Fultz has gone out along with the #167 – we’re not sure if Tim George, Jr. or Eric Holmes is driving that entry, but we’ll find out.

10:27

Stat Boy in the pits just informed us that it is Tim George in that car.

10:28

Teams were given transponder mounts last night in tech and they were getting their transponders this morning.  Everything is scored electronicly, so as long as everyone did what they were supposed to, there should be officials practice times kept today.

10:28

Comment From Brandon Will their be official times kept today? I assume with over 120 race cars that timing and scoring would be really hard to do

10:28

Comment From Colleen Thank you Speed 51, for a wonderful job !!

10:28

Comment From Lisa Campbell Has the Perfect Circle Team (Brian Campbell) been out yet?

10:29

Brian Campbell is on the track now and the #20 car looks very sharp.

10:29

Comment From Guest Has any of the snowflake drivers gone out as of yet?

10:29

Comment From Guest Has any of the snowflakes drivers gone out to practice yet…in question Bobby Measmer Jr.?

10:29

Yes, dozens of Snowflake cars have practice but Measmer’s #14 hasn’t been one of them yet.

10:29

Comment From Lisa Campbell I concur with Colleen –it’s nice to feel like we are there; due to you all doing such a wonderful job!

10:30

Comment From MIke Alabama Is Scott Carlson on th etrack yet or is he still tinkering and changing shocks.

10:30

The #21 of Scott Carlson is sitting on jackstands right now.

10:30

Comment From Guest Thanks Speed 51 # for all the updates!!!

10:30

Comment From Jessica Is there anyway to get a live feed of practice like USAC uses for their races?

10:30

No, the track does not have a live feed of timing and scoring.

10:31

Comment From dragracer Any idea if Bill Elliott is spotting for his son Chase during practice?

10:31

Chase told us last night on Speed 51 Radio that he expects that his Dad will be spotting for him this weekend.  We haven’t seen him in the spotters’ section, but we have seen Cup driver Dave Blaney spotting for his son Ryan today.

10:32

Comment From Dan Any golf kart flips yet this year in the pits??? LMAO

10:32

No golf cart, ATV or UTV wrecks yet – but the weekend is still young.

10:32

Comment From Mike Ledwidge Great job, keep up with the info! It’s as close to racing as we can get up here in Nova Scotia this time of year!

10:33

The track is current under the red flag to allow people and vehicles to cross overto the infield since there is no tunnel here.

10:34

Comment From R. J. Scott Who in the speed51 staff is handling the Trackside Now updates? Is one person in charge or do you guys switch off who’s sitting at the computer? The little “click” sound my computer makes when you update is like a little christmas present for me to unwrap…I love that little sound!

10:34

Right now, Mike Twist and Jason Buckley are set up in the tower on their laptops with Matt Dillner and Elgin Traylor roaming the pit area.  We’ll have Jamie Williams here shooting photos this afternoon too and Allison Fulson coming later in the weekend.

10:34

Comment From sportsman12 will you guys be doing the support div races tonight too?

10:34

No, tonight we will be at Fast Eddie’s Fun Center broadcasting live for Speed 51 Radio on RaceTalkRadio.com.

10:35

Comment From Colleen Can I ask how Jeff Choquette #33 did in Practice ?? Thanks

10:35

Unfortunately, we can’t give you an answer until after the session when the rundown is released from the track.  We don’t have live timing and scoring.  But we will keep you posted.

10:37

The second act of the first practice session is now about to begin.  The #23 of Jimmy Weller was the first car to hit the track.

10:37

Comment From caz is kyle busch there?

10:37

Yes, but Kyle Busch has not practiced yet.  Last night, he was right down with his team pushing the car through tech and getting his hands dirty working on it.

10:38

The officials are still working on getting transponder numbers and names lined up, so we do not have a complete list from the first practice session.   However, here are the top-three times (all Supers).   We do not have any more other than these three for this first session.PRACTICE ONE TIMES (Top Three Only)

POS CAR # DRIVER TYPE TIME
1 49 Ryan Lawler SLM 16.716
2 1 Eddie Mercer SLM 16.931
3 99S Casey Smith SLM 17.008

10:38

Comment From Guest Has there been any Red Farmer sightings trying to sneek is someones car.

10:38

No Red Farmer sightings yet, but we’d love to see him get in a car and show these youngsters how to do it.

10:39

Comment From SLewis Great to hear Jamie Williams is there. That guy is one of the best racing photographers in the business!

10:39

Actually, Jamie Williams is in the air somewhere between Maine and Pensacola right now, but he should be here this afternoon to take some great photos.

10:39

Comment From Mike Scott Alabama Here is the rndown for the Snowball Showdown held at Fast Eddies FUN Center owned by Scott Carlson

10:39

Comment From Mike Scott Alabama http://www.fasteddiesfunctr.com/showdown.htm

10:40

Ryan Lawler is in Stanley Smith’s car, but we don’t think there was any falling out – Kyle Busch has run plenty of different drivers in his cars – himself, Brian Ickler, Alex Haase and others.

10:40

Comment From Guest Lawler is in the Stanley Smith car??? Did he and KBM have a falling out?

10:41

Comment From guest Jack Choquette, 1954 NASCAR Modified Champion is at the track watching his grandson, Jeff Choquette #33…

10:41

Brian Ickler is making his first practice laps of the weekend with the Kyle Busch Motorsports #15.

10:42

Comment From FREDRICK LETS SEE SOME PIC OF THE CARS ON TRACK

10:42

They’ll be plenty of photos later on.  Right now, Matt Dillner is trackside taking those photos so we’ll have to wait until a lull in the action comes for him to download and post them.

10:43

Comment From dragracer Has Steven Wallace been spotted with “sockets in his pockets” or slinging his helmet?

10:43

No “sockets in the pockets” for Steven Wallace yet, but we did joke with him about that infamous incident on Speed 51 Radio’s Wednesday night show.

10:45

The caution is now out for Brandon Odom spinning on the fronstretch.  The #16 just got loose out of turn four and Odom kept it from hitting anything.

10:45

Comment From Mike Scott Alabama That year for Steven was very eventful. He had sockets in the pockets and a porta potty wreck.

10:46

Comment From Guest where are the clarks and the rowes?

10:46

Cassius Clark is here racing this weekend.  We’re betting that Johnny Clark is busy at work today in his family’s scrap metal yard in Farmingdale, Maine while Mike and Ben Rowe are working together at their trucking and excavation business in Turner, Maine.  We’d sure love to see all of them racing here this week though.

10:48

Comment From dragracer Has there been a Ronnie Sanders spotting in Pensacola this week? Is the former Snowball Derby champ there helping Bubba Pollard?

10:48

Comment From BR Has anybody spotted Ronnie “The Bomb” Sanders yet?

10:49

Yes, Ronnie Sanders is here helping out Bubba Pollard this weekend.  We’ve seen him in the pit area.

10:50

Comment From racerforever What is the deal with “sockets in the pockets”?

10:50

A few years back, Steven Wallace’s car didn’t make weight in the tech area.  To help try to fatten it up, Wallace stuffed sockets in his pockets during the second weigh-in.  He was caught and disqualified.

10:51

Comment From Mike Weeda Saw that you mentioned Alex Haase. Was just wondering whatever happened to him running SLMs for KBM

10:51

Alex Haase is here helping out the KBM team this weekend.  He’s not racing, but he has run some events for this team this season.

10:53

Comment From V Has Johanna made an appearance on the track yet – hoping she continues her successful season

10:53

Comment From chad how is JO looking

10:53

We haven’t seen Johanna Long on track yet, but our noses have been buried in the laptops for part of the time so it is possible that we missed her.

10:54

Comment From Pam Edwards Where is Taylor Satterfield?

10:54

Comment From Pam Edwards How does Taylor Satterfield look?

10:54

Right now, the Satterfield car is on pit road and it looks like the team is making a chassis adjustment to it.

10:55

Comment From JOE BUFORD WISH I WAS THERE

10:58

We just got word that CRA’s top dogs RJ Scott and Glenn Luckett will be arriving down here at Five Flags Speedway tomorrow around qualifying to enjoy the weekend’s activities.   We think they chose that date since the Fast Eddie’s Karting event will be tonight and they didn’t want to be embarrassed on the track by getting beat by the Speed 51 staffers.Already down here from CRA is Eddie Chew, helping Ricky Brooks in tech.

10:58

11:00

Comment From guest Is the snowball going to be televised or will there be a dvd to order? Cannot attend this year due to work

11:00

Ted Baber Video Productions has been here about seven years, recording the Derby.   About a week after the Derby weekend, you can order your copy on DVD  by  contacting Ted Baber at  [email protected].   The Derby video is  $45  and the Snowflake 100 is  $35.   Support  division videos are also available and there is a package deal  if you order all races.

11:01

Johanna Long is in no rush to get on track as her Super Late Models is up on jacks, while the Pro Late Model is still in the trailer.

11:01

Comment From Billy Has Josh Hamner made any laps yet?

11:01

No, Josh Hamner’s #38 has been sitting on jackstands all morning.

11:02

The red flag is out again to allow teams to cross over the track.

11:04

Comment From Slm fan Is Devin Jones there? How about Jason Hogan?

11:04

Devin Jones is not here.   Jones was hit with a few illnesses towards the end of the racing season, including getting the H1N1 and then the regular flu right after that during the North-South Shootout weekend.   The team decided to sit out this year’s Derby weekend to make sure he is 100% before getting back into a race car.Jason Hogan told us at the World Crown he was not coming here to race.

11:05

Comment From dragracer Jason Hogan posted a note on his Facebook site last night that he’s in Pensacola helping Steven Wallace.

11:06

Comment From Guest How are campbells and vandoorns cars running

11:06

Comment From guest Can you tell me how the Texas guys are doing? James Buesher,Mark Chrudimsky, Chris and Greg Davidson,Dillon Spreen.

11:06

Comment From racer any news on buescher?

11:06

Comment From king29 how is kenseth doin? Should be interesting to see how he does

11:07

We will have a full rundown of practice speeds after the session is completed.  Right now, we do not have information beyond the top few speeds available to us.

11:09

Comment From Bald Stevie Who’s James Buescher driving for this weekend?

11:09

James Buescher is driving as a teammate to Eddie Mercer in a car supported by Phoenix Racing.

11:11

Comment From Steven (CA) How does Bumbera look

11:11

We have not seen her car and we have been told that she withdrew from the event.

11:12

Comment From Guest I was told that you could go onto mylap.com for lap times, but there is no link from there for the Derby lap times?

11:12

That is done by the track and we are told that those times will be up later on today – just not on a live feed.

11:12

Timing and scoring still doesn’t have a full list, but we were able to get the top 10 times for the Supers and top four times for the Pros (combined practice session).

Comment From D. Boyer How is Scott Hantz doing today?

11:14

Scott Hantz is doing very well today with his Super Late Model.  He was second on the latest rundown that we were provided.

11:14

Comment From Guest Paul Kelley and Taylor Satterfield are flying the Georgia flag proud! Both live in the same area in N.E. Georgia to boot!

11:16

Ryan Crane is now making his first practice laps of the day.

11:17

Jeff Choquette is making a race run in this round of practice. They are happy with the car and will plan on doing a mock qualifying run this afternoon around 2pm.

11:17

We are just about at 1,000 live viewers who are following along with our Speed51.com coverage today.  Thank you for reading and keep those questions coming!

11:17

Heath Hindman said he is blown away by how much grip is out there on the racetrack. He has run here a bunch and never though that he would even have this type of grip unless the track was repaved.

11:17

Comment From Guest Not to sound like a broken record, but Ryan Crane is a Georgia native too. Grew up in Jefferson, Georgia before moving to Florida.

11:18

Brian Campbell would like to inform all the readers on Speed51.com that he did not bring the cold weather down from Michigan. He also was surprised how slippery the track has gotten since his test session here earlier in the week.

11:21

Comment From guest how’s the weather…..cold? cloudy? sunny? planning on coming down tommorrow can’t wait !!!!!!

11:21

It was very cloudy and gray earlier this morning.  Right now, it is cloudy but slightly brighter.  We even see one little blue window in the sky.  It is a bit chilly for Florida though.

11:21

Comment From Bald Stevie Is Brian Scott’s paint scheme identical to the other KBM cars?

11:21

Yes, same paint scheme but different number (#15).

11:22

Oops….I read that wrong – Brian Ickler’s paint scheme is identical to the other KBM cars.  Brian Scott’s car is different looking altogether.

11:24

Comment From West Michigan Any pics of Vandoorns car yet? Curious to see. Thanks

11:24

Comment From Guest could tou post a pic of johnny van dorns car

11:24

Comment From NC Jack We need PICS!

11:24

We’ll have those as soon as practice is over.  There is no tunnel here to cross over here to get those photos from the camera to the laptop and up online.

11:26

Comment From guest how many cars does kbm have down there? who all is driving for him? are any of them running the pro race?

11:26

The #51 Snowball Derby and #51 Snowflake 100 entries of Kyle Busch and the #15 Snowball Derby entry of Brian Ickler all came down in Kyle Busch Motorsports haulers and are pitted together.  There is also some connection between the Brian Scott car and KBM, but that machine came down in a different hauler and is pitted in another area of the infield.

11:26

Comment From Lefthander Chassis Thanks for the coverage speed51.com

11:27

Comment From Jamie W Almost there. In the air for another half hour till touch down in FL. Don’t for get to pick us up!

11:27

Ladies and gentlemen – that is world-famous racing photographer Jamie Williams checking in with us!

11:27

Comment From Norm D 67 degrees and sunny in Portland Maine at noon………..we New Englanders can’t be blamed for cold weather! Good Luck to Cocky Clark, he’s earned some.

11:27

Mike Twist here – I never should have left Maine with that kind of weather in December!

11:28

Comment From fl fan Crane actually grew up in San Mateo florida, just outside of Jacksonville….

11:33

We are currently under a red flag to allow teams to cross over the track.

11:33

Comment From Norm D It’s pretty nice, I’m making race car noises and pretending I’m there!

11:33

Comment From Jamie W It was 49 and raining cats and dogs when I left at 7am

11:34

Comment From Guest Crane may have done, but he graduated from Jefferson High School in Jefferson, Georgia, not far from Peach State Speedway.

11:34

We’re not quite sure where he came from, but Ryan Crane is said to have the best manicured nails in the pit area.

11:36

Some people must think it is really cold here in Pensacola, Florida.  We just saw a Kyle Busch Motorsports crew member walking around with a full snowmobile suit over his crew gear!

11:36

Comment From farsha Is Johanna long hot today?

11:36

No, it is kind of chilly and overcast here at the track.

11:37

Comment From JOE BUFORD ME AND STERLING MARLIN COMEING DOWN FRI,,,,,,,LATE

11:38

Comment From Doodle Has ryan Crane been on the track yet and how is he doing?

11:38

Ryan Crane has been out on the track.  We’ll have a full rundown after practice is over.

11:39

There are some bomber and sportsman teams entering the pits with their haulers, so this red flag will last for a few more minutes.

11:39

Comment From TPD Where is Justin Wakefield?

11:39

Comment From guest I heard Justin Wakefield is not there right?

11:39

We have not seen Justin Wakefield here yet, but he was pre-entered for the event.

11:40

Comment From db when do the modifieds hit the track?

11:40

The Modifieds are here tomorrow.

11:40

Comment From Dan I have a question about tonight. In the past you guys all go to Fast Eddies and don’t have as much coverage on the bombers and sportsman races as you do for the others. Will there be coverage tonight on those races aswell as the kart race at Fast Eddies? Just wondering. Thanks!!

11:41

No, we will be doing a live Speed 51 Radio show from Fast Eddie’s tonight and will wrap up Trackside Now after Snowball Derby and Snowflake 100 practice is completed.

11:41

Comment From guest who is driving the # 12 drawdy bros. car this weekend ???

11:41

Justin Drawdy himself.

11:42

There is an entry list on the Five Flags Speedway website  5flagsspeedway.com in their “news” section.

11:43

Comment From Jamie W I’m staying at the track to take pics of the races tonight.

11:43

Comment From db do you have a link showing all registered entries for all divisions?

11:43

Comment From Guest Condolences today to David Hole and his family on their loss.

11:43

We have news on Justin Wakefield.   We contacted him by phone and he is not here.   His car owner Jake Carswell cancelled the trip due to their motorcoach getting flooded out during the Atlanta floods recently.   Due to needing to get that all squared away, it just wasn’t in the cards for them to come down.Wakefield said though that they are planning on racing the full 2010 season again in PASS South.

11:47

We have just gone back to green a short bit ago.   While we have a moment, we are going to cycle our electronics.   We will be back shortly.

12:02

We are back to a break in the action here as they have cleared the gates.   We will have some times from the last two practice sessions momentarily.

12:06

We have a clarification on times.   They are combining some of these sessions in time, so the first few times we posted were cumilative.   At 12:30pm, during the lunch break, we will have the true second round of practice session times.

12:07

Eddie Mercer said his car is fine and it’s still way too early to get excited about having a fast racecar.

12:08

Ross Kenseth told his crew chief Joe Wood that he likes new tires out on the track.   Not surprising for someone who is making his first visit to Five Flags Speedway.

12:08

TJ Reaid will be running the Snowflake 100 this weekend at Five Flags Speedway.   He has been out on the track a few times and is pleased with his car.   They plan on making a few more runs today to get it just right.

12:08

Jason Young has been fighting an oil leak in his Super Late Model and has not spent much time on the racetrack.   Also, they had planned to borrow a car to race in the Snowflake 100.   That car has not arrived as of yet and he will not run the Flake without the missing racecar.

12:09

We checked in with the Kyle Busch Motorsports effort as he has been out several time trying both cars out.   Bond Suss, the teams crew chief, said they are still working on the car in the center and they’re about 95-percent where they want to be.

12:09

The track is hot again for the next 21 minutes.

12:14

We had an early spin in this practice by Kyle Sirrizotti, but he was able to get going the right way and continue.

12:16

We are under a stoppage during this practice session for a wreck between two cars in turn three.   We are trying to get who they are.

12:18

It appears to be the #12 of Justin Drawdy and the #2 of Zach Niessner that wrecked pretty hard in three and four.   Niessner’s car is going on the hook and it appears the #12 car lost a wheel in the wreck.

12:26

Our guys from the pits are reporting the Justin Drawdy is already going to a back-up and are unloading it as we type.   Zach Niessner’s car appears to have been junked just as bad, from the front to the back.   It is unclear if they have a back-up or not.

12:36

We have been green for a bit, but just went to yellow for a single spin by John Bolen in turn three.   He appeared to not hit the wall and continued. We still have some practice time left before the 30-minute lunch break.

12:36

Track is back hot.

12:40

Dan Elliott from Gresham Motorsports Park is here in the tower, checking out this weekend’s action.Elliott did tell us they are going to make a change with the GMP track in 2010.   The “jersey barriers” on the front stretch, which assisted in the rollover of Bubba Pollard’s car during the World Crown 300, will be replaced with flat-sided barriers that can be moved.   That was the plan, but they have to be special ordered and were not available in time for this year’s World Crown.

He also said they have other improvements they are looking into, including soft wall technology.

12:40

Practice has concluded prior to the 30-minute lunch break.   We will have some times shortly.

12:41

Comment From Miss. Peachstate 🙂 Haha i just read the statement about Ryan’s manicured nails…Don’t forget the waxed eyebrows! They look better than mine half the time! 🙂 Sad I’m not there with you guys!

12:53

We are going to take a short break and will be back with more, including times, shortly.

We are back under green flag during the practice sessions here at Five Flags Speedway.

1:27

Comment From Scott C Is Lonnie Sommerville there?

1:28

Comment From Scott Is Lonnie Sommerville there?

1:29

Lonnie Sommerville is not racing here this weekend and we haven’t seen him in the pits either.  But that doesn’t mean he isn’t here watching either.  We’ll let you know if there are any Lonnie sightings.

1:29

Comment From gerry would have been nice to see some maritime teams there as well

1:30

John Fleming was here last year (or maybe the year before, my memory gets fuzzy with age), but didn’t make the race.  We would love to see Lonnie Sommerville, Shawn Turple or one of those guys race here.  There is a lot of racing talent up in the Canadian Maritimes.

1:31

Comment From Bill B. Is Ricky Turner crew chief for Chase Elliott this year? Anybody know why Ricky stopped racing? He was an awesome driver!

1:31

Yes, Ricky Turner is Chase Elliott’s crew chief.  We think that he’s backed off on his own racing because it’s just such an expensive sport.

1:32

Comment From JOE BUFORD IF SOMEONE NEEDS A BACK UP DRIVER I AM THERE!!!!!!

1:33

1:33

PHOTO: Cassius Clark’s team had a tough morning. Their carburetor didn’t pass tech.   The 8-team got a new one on and was cleared to run practice.

1:34

Comment From Guest Any information or lap times on #17 of Josh Brock

1:34

Josh Brock has a Snowball and a Snowflake car unloaded.  He was near the bottom of the speed chart with his Super Late Model and I don’t think he has been out with his Pro Late Model

1:34

Comment From Guest Any information or lap times for the #17 of Josh Brock?

1:34

Comment From Guest Ricky Turner has been on the Bill Elliott Driver Development team for 2 years now, serving as crew chief for Mitch Cobb last year/

1:35

Comment From Racefan Has Scott Carlson been out ?

1:35

Scott has been out for a few laps, but his #21 sat on jackstands for most of the day.

1:35

Comment From sportsman12 I’ve talked to Ricky for several years now..my nephew is a big fan of Ricky. He has told me in the past it was because of the money situation and the Elliots asked him to help out with the team..but he hasn’t thrown out the possibility of returning to the tracks one day…he seems content with his crew chief roll with Chase…

Comment From Racefan Thanks !

1:36

Comment From Jeff Can we find more lap times anywhere else on the net? On mylaps maybe?

1:36

The track has mylaps.com coverage, but I’m not sure when they update that.  Feel free to visit the Five Flags website for more information.

1:37

Comment From steven hey u all at speed51 are the best. It started snowing in chicago today but i feel like it is middle of summer and in the heart of the race season. Couold not make it down for the race but i feel like I am right in the middle of it all. THANKS SPEED51

1:37

Thanks Steven

1:38

Comment From guest # 14 PLM should be JAKE Kruger Not Jack.

1:38

Comment From JWMS96 The #14 PLM from Texas is Jake Kruger.

1:38

Comment From Guest #14 Should be JAKE Kruger from Bastrop,Texas. Not Jack

1:38

Comment From guest I think it is JAKE Kruger, If He is from texas

1:39

The official times from the track have him listed as “Jack” but we have let them know that it is “Jake”.  By the way, check out Speed51.com for a story from earlier this week about his TSRS championship this year.

1:39

The yellow is out for a solo spin by Taylor Satterfield.  He does not appear to have hit anything with his #40.

1:40

Comment From Guest wheres Drew Brannon? Is he running with his ASA team led by Miller?

1:40

Drew Brannon isn’t entered in either the Snowball Derby or Snowflake 100.  We haven’t see him walking around either.

1:41

Comment From NCRACEFAN How is bobby gill looking?

1:41

Bobby Gill is very happy with his car.  He hasn’t made many laps today, but he’s almost even smiling about how well it has been running.

1:42

For a practice session, it appears quite chaotic out there.   John Bolen hit the back of Brian Icklercoming off turn four just now, causing Ickler to get a bit sideways.   Both  continued on.

1:42

Comment From Rickaa Any idea on a car count?

1:42

We are told that there are around 65 entries for each of the two big races.  We don’t have an official roster yet.

1:43

Comment From WillyRoy Is Beau Slocumb racing in this years event?

1:43

No, Beau Slocumb isn’t racing here this weekend.

1:44

Comment From Guest is chuck barnes crew chief for drawdy

1:44

I think that Gary Crooks is actually listed as the crew chief for Justin Drawdy, but Chuck Barnes, Jr. is helping the team out here this week.

1:45

Comment From Guest what time are they going to post the pictures that they took from practice

1:45

We have posted some practice photos and will continue to post more throughout the day.

1:46

Comment From dragracer Is it creating a problem having the Super and Pros on the track at the same time today?

1:46

Other than there being a long line to get onto the track at times, there hasn’t seemed to be a problem with both classes practicing at once.  Both the Super Late Models and Pro Late Models run close to the same lap times.

1:46

1:46

Comment From racerforever Has stremme been on the track

1:46

Comment From racerforever Has david stremme been on the track

1:47

Not yet.

1:47

Comment From dragracer Which of Kyle Busch Motorsports’ cars is Richie Wauters in charge of?

1:47

Richie Wauters is fielding his own car this week for Steven Wallace.  He is not working in the Kyle Busch Motorsports camp for this event.

1:47

Comment From Rickaa Keep up the good work boys. Wish I was there.

1:48

Comment From SLM Fan Is Preston Pelletier or Jay Fogleman there?

1:48

Neither driver is entered in the Snowball Derby or Snowflake 100.

1:48

We have a special feature of Speed 51’s coverage of the Derby that we have brought back again this year.   We are doing video Derby Diaries with a few drivers.Check out this Derby Diary from Chase Elliott.   We will be following his weekend with daily updates:

CHASE ELLIOTT DERBY DIARY
http://www.speed51.com/2009_Stories/Snowball/Derby_Diary_Chase_Elliott.html

1:48

Comment From Duke Sr Love the updates guys. Feel like I’m there rather then CT. What’s up with the 51 Beef o Brady’s car. Thanks again. Great job!

1:49

Bobby Gill’s #51 was in the top 20 during practice despite only running a few laps.  Bobby Gill is very happy with the car and thinks there is even more speed left in it still.

1:49

Comment From Guest You guys are doing a great job on the race coverage. Glad I found the website !! We will be with you all week!!

1:49

Comment From Race Fan Good to see (2) Texas Boys in the top – ten of the first Round – Good luck Ryan Lawler and Casey Smith

1:50

Comment From PCola Fan Why does Jason Hogan compete in alot of other short track races during the year (AA400, World Crown, Etc.) but never seems to race the Snowball????

1:50

Jason has told us in years past that it is just so expensive to come down for Snowball Derby week, that he hasn’t been able to do it without getting some good sponsors.

1:50

Comment From guest you should see the new “Bus” the Carswells replaced the “RV” with!

1:50

Comment From Dan THANKYOU JAMIE!!!!

1:51

Correction to something from earlier – Beau Slocumb is actually here.  With over 130 cars in the pits, sometimes we lose track.

1:52

Comment From Dan Some of the best races every year are in the sportsman class, you guys should check it out one year

1:52

We love all kinds of racing, but like at many tracks we just don’t have the ability to cover every support division and still cover the main events as extensively as we like to.

1:53

Comment From Guest Good luck to Beau. It’s great to see him back. He put on a great show at the World Crown a few weeks ago. What a great story it would be for him to pick up a win this weekend…..

1:53

Comment From Brandon Great to see Beau back at the track!

1:53

Comment From racer hope richie doesnt have any of last years tires lol

1:54

Comment From Guest Where is Augie Grill

1:54

Standing down by his cars.  Both Grill’s Pro Late Model and Super Late Model are unloaded, but neither has hit the track yet today.

1:54

Comment From Guest Where is Augie Grill?

1:55

Comment From guest How many SLM cars are on the track practicing at the same time ?

1:55

The cars are going out in groups of around 15.

1:55

Comment From LeadSeventeen its all about $$$$ guys, you know that. A lot of talented drivers just can’t afford to run the Derby without major backing! You dont show up to a gun fight with a dull knife as someone said to me last week. GO TJ, GCX gett’em goin fast! Good luck and safe driving to all enetered this weekend!

1:56

Yes, racing is an expensive sport and there is nothing cheap about Derby week with a Super Late Model.

1:57

Comment From TacoWithWheels Is Zach Neissner the kid that came down from Washington? Any idea if he has a backup car for the Snowflake?

1:57

Yes, Zach Neissner is from Washington State.  His team does not have a back-up car.

1:57

Comment From R. J. Scott If any of the viewers find a good, working link to MYLAPS results for today, please post it…

1:58

We spoke with Niessner after his crash.   He told Speed51.com that they plan on fixing the car. He said it has a bent front-clip.   They do not have a back-up ride.

2:00

Comment From Mr. Whipple is Cassius Clark the only New England native entered in the Derby? Does Ben Rowe ever compete in that event? You boys are doing a fabulous job today. I sure enjoy the great coverage.

2:00

Cassius Clark is the only New Englander in this year’s race.  Ben Rowe has never raced in the Derby.  We have had Mainers Scott Mulkern and Johnny Clark come down in year’s past.  Connecticut’s Ryan Preece ran in the race last year too.  Those are the only New Englanders that I can think of who have raced in the Derby.

2:00

Comment From Hmiller51 Keep us Berlin/Kzoo folks posted on Our locals Jeff Ganus and Brian Campbell

2:02

Comment From Steven (CA) Since you guys are fielding a team, can you give us some idea of what it costs to run the Snowball? It seems like Super Late Model racing is as expensive as ARCA or Camping World East. And is there ever going to be a time when they don’t split the Supers and the Pros considering they are almost identical

2:02

Super Late Model racing is less expensive than ARCA or the Camping World East Series but it is still far from cheap.  This week is expensive due to tire bills and keeping a crew in town all week long.  I don’t really have a good idea on the budget numbers though.  Even though they are related, BDI Racing and Speed51.com are two different companies.

2:02

Comment From Guest 1974 Snowball Derby champ Pete Hamilton is from Newton, Massachusetts. He’s best known for winning the 1970 Daytona 500 driving for Petty Enterprises.

2:03

That’s right!  We hear that Pete Hamilton is still doing well up in Massachusetts and has been involved in the real estate business.

2:03

Comment From Dredden Thanks, Unpresidented Coverage guys! Just what the derby deserves!

2:04

Comment From racer it takes about 10k to run the derby and thats the low side

2:04

Comment From R. J. Scott Hey LeadSeventeen…got any big news you want to share with us about CG for next year? I heard a rumor…and Momma can tell it best! I’ll sing a song for ya if you share….

2:04

Comment From Doug M. That is why dirt is so much better than asphalt right now……..cost veruses payout

2:05

Comment From jj Augie never practices alott…..Franky does not like to waste his stuff

2:05

Comment From Herb Shoe For a top team to come down and be competitive it is about $8-$10,00 for this one race. The tire bill and hotels are much more than normal.

2:05

Comment From Guest At one point, Pete was racing Sportsman cars out of Buford, Georgia and owned a ton of real estate there. I heard he sold it all off and made a mint. If you’ve seen the area lately, you can see why!

2:05

Comment From BC I know i guy that ran the Snowball and Snowflake race last year and spent just over $20,000

2:05

Comment From farsha dirt is for the gardens around the race track

2:06

Practice is now under red flag conditions to allow teams to cross over the track.

2:07

We have over 2500 people watching our coverage today of the events here at the track with hundreds of questions and comments being sent in.   We want to thank everyone for their participation and viewing of the events here at the track.

2:07

We caught up with Johanna Long this afternoon and asked her how the car was going.  Her response was a quiet one, but it told the whole story.  Johanna just smiled and gave a big thumbs up.

2:07

Comment From SLewis simply amazing coverage….

2:07

AUGIE GRILL DERBY DIARY

http://www.speed51.com/2009_Stories/Snowball/Derby_Diary_Augie_Grill.html

2:08

There are a few very accomplished drivers helping out Justin Drawdy’s team this weekend.  Chuck Barnes, Jr. and Travis Kittleson are both lending a hand on the #12 machine. We talked to Kittleson briefly and he told us that after running NASCAR Nationwide Series and Camping World Truck Series races in recent seasons, he is looking for a ride for the 2010 season.

2:08

Comment From chad it takes around 20gs to run a slm at the derby

2:08

Comment From Dredden When you figure tires, pit passes, fuel and meals you will easily spend 5k Minimum. S0me teams spend 10k and up.

2:09

Comment From LeadSeventeen Hey RJ, Rumors are just that RUMORS…Ive been taught ya cant cash a “rumor” at the bank. Rest assured of this one thing buddy…. you will continue to see CG at the track somewhere for many years to come. He says it beats sitting in a stuffy office somewhere 😉

2:11

Comment From Guest is zach neissner done for the weekend?

2:11

He might be.  His team was not hurrying around the car after it got wrecked and there was heavy damage to the front and rear of it.  They do not have a back-up car either.

2:11

We’re back to green flag conditions in Snowball Derby/Snowflake 100 practice.

2:11

Comment From Dennis Schoenfeld Jr Can’t wait to get off work and head to the airport Go #43 love you guys and see ya soon!!

2:13

Comment From SLewis Drawdy’s car looks awful torn up. Is that the same one Chuck Barnes Jr. drove at Winchester in October?

2:13

Chuck Barnes drove for the Drawdy team in the Winchester 400 earlier this season.  We’re not sure if the car he wheeled then is the primary or back-up car from this weekend though.

2:14

Jack Smith has just looped his #28 in a cloud of smoke on the frontstretch.  He didn’t hit anything and amazingly, nobody hit him.  The track is now under caution cautions.

2:16

The green flag is back out.

2:17

When Chuck Barnes wrecked his #12 earlier today, it didn’t take long for his team to spring into action.  Their back-up car was unloaded from the hauler before the wrecked primary car was even on a flatbed to get towed back to the pit area.

2:20

Comment From SLewis Drawdy’s team and their efficiency with the backup car reminds me of the World Series at New Smyrna 2 seasons ago when Tim Russell’s crew had his backup car unloaded and ready to go before his primary car even made it back to the pad.

2:22

Comment From NCRACEFAN whos driving the #12 Barnes or Drawdy??

2:22

Justin Drawdy is driving the #12 Super Late Model.  Chuck Barnes and Travis Kittleson are both drivers who are helping out the team in the pits.

2:22

Comment From NCRACEFAN Where is Russell? they win everything down there, figured they would head to the derby!

2:22

The #36 team of Tim Russell is not on the grounds this weekend.  We would love to see him here racing though.

2:25

The caution is out for a hard hit in turn three by the #7 of CJ Tuck.  He appeared to be okay, but his car is heavily damaged.

2:25

Comment From NCRACEFAN Great coverage BTW guys….

2:25

Comment From Dredden Has anybody seem Rich Bickle (5-time Derby Winner) in the pits? That would be a great interview. Wish he was competing against Gill. They sure have put on some great shows in past Derbys!

2:26

We have not seen Rich Bickle at the track yet this weekend.

2:27

Comment From Easy Money Is there anywhere we can get an entire rundown of speeds? I recall a website or link that offered that last year.

2:27

Mylaps.com does practice rundowns, but I don’t think that information has been dowloaded to their site from the track yet.  The timing and scoring folks have plenty to do when racecars are on the track, so I would expect that to get posted sometime after practice is finished for the day.  We’ll post anything that we get right away.

2:27

Comment From Patrick Thanks for the great coverage.

2:27

Comment From Guest Any idea on how many Bomber cars are there?

2:27

No, we have not gotten a Bomber division roster and those teams do not practice until after 5pm CT.

2:29

Comment From Guest Any News from Jerrod Foley #04,

2:29

Comment From Cant Be There… any word on the 04 of Jerrod Foley

2:29

Comment From Kentucky Any news on Jerrod Foley is he gonna get his car fixed to race?

2:30

Comment From Lori Any more news on Foley?

2:30

The #04 team of Jarod Foley was working on their car after its earlier wreck.  We’ll just have to see how that progresses.

2:31

Comment From Weeda The Strut Just wondering if Jerrod Foley and crew have bounced back from their earlier incident

2:32

The track is still under a red flag.  The #7 car of CJ Tuck has been towed back to the pit area, but the track is now allowing teams to cross over to the infield.

2:32

Comment From CF when are mods out

2:33

The Modifieds will come into the track tomorrow morning.

2:35

Augie Grill still has not practiced either his Super Late Model or Pro Late Model yet today.  The pace around his hauler is very relaxed.

2:36

Comment From georgia boy you have any pics of Drawdy’s car after

2:36

We will try to get a photo of the wrecked car up in a little bit.

2:37

Comment From LJH Matt is greatly missed….

2:37

Yes, things just aren’t the same here without Matt Hawkins this year.  We also miss seeing his father Fred Hawkins at the track – as he has always been a very friendly person to see every year.  We hope that the Hawkins family is doing well after their tragic loss earlier this year.

2:37

Comment From BG Way to go Korey!!!!!!

2:37

Comment From Dredden Here is a link to a complete Derby Schedule for those following online. You can see what class of cars run what days and the practice schedule.  http://5flagsspeedway.com/Uploads/sbschedule.pdf

2:38

Comment From Guest looks like CJ Tuck will be the third driver done for the weekend…..

2:38

Possibly – there is rear end damage to his #7 machine.

2:38

Comment From mccann jr about the cost to go to the derby, its all about tires. you could go down there for as little as 10,000. but if you actually want a serious chance to win, you have to factor in the cost of testing at the facility many times before the race and then many many sets of tires to keep pace with the “heavy hitters”, it takes the little racer out of the picture, but i dont think this race is for them anyway-this is the best of the best, and the best have money.

2:39

Comment From Wayne Thanks for all the up to date info. Its good to here that Twisty is there for the northeast view.

2:40

Johanna Long has just spun in turn four.  The caution is out.

2:40

Speed51.com just spoke with CJ Tuck. His car is in the back pits and his team is surveying the damage. It doesn’t look good for the driver of the #7 car.   Tuck told us his dad said it might be ready for the junkyard.   Don’t expect Tuck to be back in action this weekend.

2:41

The car that Johanna just spun is her Pro Late Model that will race in the Snowflake 100.  She did not hit anything and it was a solo spin, so we don’t expect that the incident will set her back too badly.

2:42

Comment From Kody can you post the practice times for the last session please

2:42

Comment From jb 31 last practice times?

2:42

Comment From LeadSeventeen I don’t know about anyone else but I’m not getting much work done in the office today! Thanks Speed51 for the coverage….. now if we could just get the SPEED Channel to televise this race for those long winters and replace some of those dull non racing programs they have. I’d be a happy happy girl 🙂

2:46

Comment From Guest Is there a car count?

2:46

Earlier today, the combined car count for the Snowball Derby and Snowflake 100 stood at 131.  We are told it has risen from there, but an official count has not been released yet.

2:47

Comment From Cody 51 I always check out yalls trackside stuff as you may know from my name. Yall always do a great job!

2:48

Comment From NCRACEFAN That is the biggest problem….after one 3 lap run, the tires are junk. That is why the “bigger” teams have a little bit of an advantage. They can just bolt on new tires almost everytime.

2:49

Yes, there is quite a drop off in lap times after a few laps on the tires.  Five Flags is an abrasive surface and tire management is a big part of Snowball Derby success.

2:50

Comment From Flash Goley Is there any live video feed for this race anywhere?

2:50

There is no video feed of the race, but visit Speed51Video.com for plenty of video highlights and interviews from throughout the weekend.

2:50

Comment From olemanriver Price to race snowball 25000 to watch for 4 days 125.00 FLY over by the blue angles would be freaking priceless……..

2:50

That has happened before, but we have learned that the Blue Angels will not be doing a fly-over this year.  They have packed it in for the season.

2:51

Comment From NCRACEFAN or sit in the comforrt of my office and follow on 51….PRICELESS! lol

2:52

Comment From Cody 51 Cant wait for sunday! I wanna be there at 11!

2:52

Comment From sportsman12 who is Eddie Mercer? Is he any good?

2:52

We are told that Eddie Mercer is just outside the top 20 in the combined practice rundown.

2:52

Comment From guest how about a flyover by the KBM and Stanley Smith helicopters?

2:53

We think that we have seen the Stanley Smith chopper overhead today.

2:53

Comment From Marc Great to see 2 Michigan boys in the top 10!!! Any sign of Tom Thomas in the Tim Steele #16?

2:54

Tom Thomas has been logging plenty of practice laps and is in about the middle of the speed chart.

2:54

Comment From Flash Goley Looks like thy might get a fly-by form a few seagulls~!

2:55

Comment From Cody 51 Mercer is a local favorite he has been racing for years he also owns a car dealer ship in the area

2:56

Comment From hedman huslers GO! PAUL KELLEY AND TEAM.#23

2:57

Comment From MATT How is Scott Hantz running?

2:58

Comment From Hantz fan any word on how scott hantz is doing?

2:58

Scott Hantz was very quick in the morning practice session, but we have not seen the #72 hit the track for a while.

2:58

Comment From Waldo Fumerton Does anyone know why Josh Hamner withdrew from the Snowflake?

2:59

Josh’s plan over the past few weeks has been to only run the Snowball Derby in order to focus on winning that race.

3:01

Comment From Doug M. It wont be the same without Wayne Anderson there this weekend!!!!

3:01

Comment From Colleen Can you tell me how #33 Jeff Choquette is doing in practice ?

3:01

Comment From guest any news on choquette

3:01

Comment From guest any more news on the #33 of choquette

3:01

In the last timed combination practice, Choquette was listed as being 49th quickest of 91 cars.

3:02

Comment From chris vandergriff Thanks for the picture of paul’s car. Look’s good!!!!

3:02

The red flag is now out for teams to cross over the track.

3:02

CRA’s 2009 season might be over, but their officials are already looking towards 2010, starting with a bonus program offered for here at the Derby.   If a CRA regular wins the Derby, they will be awarded a $1000 credit towards 2010 series memberships and entries.   For the full release, click the link below:http://www.speed51.com/2009_Stories/Snowball/CRA_Snowball_Bonus_12_3.html

3:02

Comment From Hamke Race Cars Go all of you Hamke car owners…and you too Ryan Lawler…We are tuned in!

3:03

Comment From guest anybody seen mickey cain at the race track

3:05

Comment From jimmy pillion boston thanks speed 51 you can play fantasy racing snowball derby at virtual thunder.com good luck all

3:06

Comment From Nick Lay Has VanDoorn been on the track today?

3:06

Yes and his Snowball Derby paint scheme looks great on the track!

3:06

Comment From chris vandergriff Matt, Can you get the word around that I am sponsoring a hedman husler of the race for the snowflake and the derby as well. $250.00 bonus for the hedman husler of each race. Tim from five flags and I agreed to do it!!!

3:07

Comment From Racermom what about Rogers & Colangelo

3:07

Comment From Guest I bet David Rogers hasnt taken many laps yet!

3:08

The laps that Rogers has run have been good ones.  He was listed as 11th in the last practice session.  We’ll try to see what we can find out about Jeremy Colangelo’s times and report back when we find out.

3:08

Comment From Steve Neely Hey guys, long time no see. I really appreciate the awesome coverage of the event. I’m sitting here in Orlando following along just as I would be if I were there (and I wish I was!) Good luck to everyone in the Speed51 crew – MD, Stix, Duke, Jamie, Elgin, and Allison – and try not to pull your hair out too much this weekend! Rock on!

3:08

Comment From Gresham front office Not to worry, Micky will be there by the time the green flag drops.

3:09

Comment From Big Daddy What about Casey Roderick?

3:09

We have not seen Casey Roderick at the track yet this weekend.  He is not entered in either event here.

3:10

Comment From olemanriver What about Jeff Purvis is he still around.

3:10

We have not seen Jeff Purvis in the pits this weekend yet.

3:10

The green flag is back out.

3:11

The yellow flag is now out for a multi-car wreck on the backstretch.

3:11

Comment From guest i heard roderick couldnt get a sponsor to cover tire bill

3:11

Comment From Guest Great coverage – next best thing to being there – I live in Alabama and I am a huge Casey Smith fan – go to all the races in Opp – good to see he has finally got a grip on this track – will be there Sunday to watch until then will continue watching the live coverage

3:12

Because of the haulers in the infield, we can’t see who wrecked on the backstretch.  We are told that there were two cars involved and they both ended up parked down low on the track.

3:12

Comment From Guest Do you know who all was involved?

3:13

Not yet, both cars appear to have driven away and back into the pits on their own.  Because of the haulers in the infield, you just can’t see the lower groove of the backstretch or pit entrance from where we are at in the tower.

3:13

The track is now back to green flag conditions.

3:14

Comment From Guest do the haulers stay in the infield during the snowflake?

3:14

During the Snowflake 100, they do.  During the Snowball Derby, they move out to the parking lot.

3:14

Comment From Guest In reference to Casey Roderick, the team is focusing all of their resources on getting him in an ARCA ride next year.

3:14

Comment From Big Tex Casey Rocks! Good coverage on our Texas drivers – thanks 51!

3:16

Comment From Kentucky top ten slm round 4 times?

3:16

Those are not available yet from the track.  When we get the top speeds, we will post them.

3:17

Comment From guest Did you find out who was involved in the accident ??

3:17

No, but there wasn’t any damage either we are told.

3:20

The back section of the pits is tight.   Several team when not on track are trying to help their fellow competitors out by directing them between cars pitted to the left and right side of the road.   There have been a few close calls.

3:20

The pace is picking up as the Late Model teams hit the final half hour of practice here on Thursday.   We spoke with Bubba Pollard who has not made a choice for his Snowball Derby car.   Just after talking with him we saw him roll out of the pits in Ronnie Sanders’ number 18 Super Late Model that we think will be his choice at the end of the day.

3:21

Dennis Reno Jr tested at Pensacola last Friday. So, Reno has sat out of practice much of the day.   He plans on making   a small run at the end of today’s practice just to make sure the car is ok.

3:21

Comment From Seth Holbrook Fans Are there any photos of “the speed master” Seth Holbrook doing his thing at the derby? Any news how he is going? We are all very proud of him in Maine and are pulling for him! We love you Seth!!!

3:21

We did see Seth Holbrook working on the KBM cars today.  We’re even heard a rumor that his protege T.J. Brackett of Beech Ridge Motor Speedway fame might be here too, but we haven’t confirmed that.  No photos of either of them yet.

3:22

Comment From Cody 51 Do they put the supers and pros on track at the same time?

3:22

For today, both the Super Late Models and Pro Late Models are practicing together.  On Friday, they will have dedicated practice sessions.

3:23

Comment From New Girl I think you guys have set a new record for most updates in a day. Thanks for keeping me updated while I’m stuck studying up here in NC! See you tomorrow!

3:23

Ladies and Gentlemen – That was Allison Fulson, who will be joining our 51 team later on in the weekend and is currently up at UNC Charlotte attending classes.

3:23

CRA Champ Johnny VanDoorn was standing by his car a few minutes ago in a classic thinkers pose.   When asked what VanDoorn was thinking about, he told us we didn’t want to know, and laughed.   In all seriousness, VanDoorn explained that they are working hard and concentrating on qualifying. They will leave race set-up stuff for Saturday as they attempt to qualify for their first Snowball Derby.

3:23

Comment From oval track fan Did Justin Drawdy get his backup car out?

3:23

Yes, the back-up car was out before the wrecked car was even loaded on a wrecker.

3:24

Comment From mike seth is the man with slm cars. if he turning the wrechs for kbm cars they will be super quick

3:24

Comment From Dan Anybody know if Chuck Barnes Jr. is there this weekend?

3:24

Chuck is here helping out the #12 Justin Drawdy team.

3:24

Augie Grill hit the track for the first time during the last session in his Super Late Model.   There was a crowd that gathered around him to see what the two-time defending Snowball Derby Champion is up too.   He’s had a pretty laid back day, but he’s always fast here at Five Flags.   This car he is racing this weekend has won the last two Blizzard race, however his two Derby wins have come in a car that he sold at the end of last season.

3:25

Comment From sportsman12 Waht does the crowd in the stands look like right now?

3:25

Right now, most of the “crowd” are spotters.  But come the weekend, the stands will be packed. The parking lot and camping areas are filled to the gills however.

3:25

Comment From mike grill will be i the top 5 in speed within the first 5 laps of the track you watch

3:25

Comment From Billy N To add something to an earlier comment. Have not seen A golfcart flip yet, but first thing this morning there was an incident. When the 04 was coming in the pits after his wreck the hood was buckled up and he hit a 4 wheeler parked on pit road.

3:26

The #9 team of Chase Elliott is pushing their Ford to the end of pit road.  We think that he is about ready to try a mock qualifying run.

3:27

Comment From badger who is helping Ross kenseth??

3:27

Comment From Guest who is Ross Kenseth driving for

3:27

I don’t know for certain, but I think that Ross Kenseth’s #25 is a Pathfinder “House Car” since we know that the Pathfinder folks up in Wisconsin are Speed51.com fans, maybe someone up there can write in and let us know for sure?

3:27

Comment From oval track fan Is Gary Crooks there with Drawdy?

3:27

Yes.

3:28

Comment From CT guy Do they have a spotters stand high up sense the backstretch is hard to see?

3:28

It is up to the spotters where to stand today as there has been no roll call.  Most are stationed in the fronstretch grandstands, although some are standing on their haulers.

3:28

Comment From sportsman12 I have said for a month now that Kyle busch will win the race on Sunday…jus sayin…prolly a 3:1 odd..

3:29

Comment From Guest forecast is looking kinda iffy for tomorrow. will practice be moved to saturday in the event of rain?

3:29

Comment From Guest ** sorry, i meant qualifying….will qualifying be moved to saturday in the event of rain

3:29

There has not been an announced back-up plan in case of rain tomorrow night.  So do your “sun dance”.

3:30

The #4 car of Elliott Massey of Mississippi has spun around and hit the backstretch wall.  The caution is now out.

3:30

Comment From CT guy Is danny O’quinn down there?

3:30

We have not seen Danny O’Quinn in the pit area and he is not racing.

3:31

3:31

3:32

Comment From jeff whats the weather look like for sat. night and sunday?

3:32

Saturday morning is a little iffy.  Saturday night and Sunday are clear.

3:32

Comment From Dirk Redder JVD in the thinking pose…OH DEAR!!!!

3:32

Comment From Flash Goley Any speeds for Stephan McCurley?

3:33

Comment From Flash Goley Still no word on McCurley?

3:33

Comment From Flash Goley Is McCurley going so fast we can’t get a time on him???

3:33

We do not have a practice rundown, so at this time we can’t answer your questions.  But we’ll keep you posted when we find something out.

3:33

Comment From Guest like the new colors on JVDs car

3:34

Comment From LeadSeventeen HAha scarry isn’t it Dirk??? Good Luck Jonny V, I’m pulling for the “little racer”

3:34

Dave Mader III has been parked in the pits for much of the day.   Mader just looked at his watch and said “it’s about time.”   Time for what we asked?   He looked up at the sky and said that he’d been waiting for the right time to go out.

3:34

3:34

3:34

Comment From Flash Goley OK thank you very much!! YOU ROCK~!

3:35

Comment From guest whats the air temp?

3:35

It is in the mid 50’s today.

3:36

Comment From mike has richy wauter car been dqed yet? lol has wallace been on the track yet

3:36

No, the Wauters car has not been DQ’ed.  Steven Wallace told us last night that they are 100% legal so you can take that for what it is worth.  He has practiced today, but we don’t have a time on him yet.

3:36

Comment From Dredden Did Madder have his bird on his shoulder? I think he is 2 tenths faster when he has the bird!

3:36

No bird on his shoulder right now, but the bird is never far away.

3:36

Comment From Guest You can go to wunderground.com for all weather updates

3:36

Comment From Dirk Redder We’ll take all the support we can get! Thanks!!

3:38

Comment From Guest can yall keep us posted if theres an announcement made regarding tomorrow (if it rains)

3:38

You will be the second to know – as soon as we can type it that is.  We expect that any decisions will be made on the fly if there is a weather situation tomorrow.

3:38

Elliott Massey’s team feels that the damage to his car is simply cosmetic, and they are getting it fixed up and ready to roll again.

3:40

Comment From BC00 how is Brain Scott doing. Is this his first time at the Derby

3:40

Actually, Brian Scott has raced at the Derby before.  If my memory is correct, he got a top ten finish in his only start here a few years back.  We don’t have a full field rundown yet.

3:42

Comment From mike is there any cup drivers there working on teams and milling around the garage area

3:42

Johnny Sauter is Brian Scott’s crew chief this weekend.  Dave Blaney has been seen spotting for his son Ryan.  We think that Bill Elliott is spotting for his son Chase, but have not confirmed that either.  Scott Speed is here doing whatever Scott Speed does.  Kyle Busch and David Stremme are racing.

3:42

Comment From Badger Brent Ross Kenseth’s car is maintained and housed at Pathfinder Chassis. To the best of my knowledge this is a operation run by Ross and his father Matt. As far as who is helping Ross this weekend, Lars Johnson, Joe Wood, and Jason Schuler are on hand with another person from PC. Rumor was going around southern WI. that a few Roush crew members might find there way to the pits. Just a rumor..

3:42

Thank you Badger Brent!

3:43

Comment From Guest new paint scheme on the 51 car?

3:43

Yes, there is a new black and gray paint scheme on the BDI #51 with the Greg Biffle Foundation coming on board as a sponsor for this race along with Beef O’ Brady’s.

3:44

Comment From Guest we need more pics please

3:45

Please keep in mind that practice has been constant for most of the day, so that means our photographers are shooting photographs right now.  We will have more photos and probably even a photo gallery up later on.

3:45

The track is now under caution for two different spins by the car of Ken McFarland.  The first was on the backstretch and the second was in turn three.

3:45

Comment From George Fowler seems like a few cars have some different colors. it’s kind of like the nascar all star race!

3:46

Comment From Hookem Some of the Cup guys need to look at Casey Smith!!!

3:46

The track is back to running under green flag conditions.

3:47

Stay tuned…..

3:47

3:48

Comment From Guest Are Elliott and Kenseth sons of the cup drivers?

3:48

Ross Kenseth is the son of Matt Kenseth and Chase Elliott is Bill Elliott’s son.

3:48

Comment From Weeda The Strut certainly no surprise that Johannal Long is at the top of the PLM charts

3:48

Comment From guest Good Job Jeff Choquette – Fountain Motorsports #33 !

3:49

As we get down to the final minutes of practice, the line to go out on the track is now long.  Very long.  There are 30 cars in line with only 15 getting on the track at one time.

3:50

Comment From sportsman12 Is Mader driving his famous #118 or another car for someone else? I didn’t see his name on the entry list…

3:50

Mader is in a black #18 car.

3:50

Comment From Nick Johnny Vandoorn is my pick for Sunday

3:51

Comment From SLewis is the ’15 cars at a time’ rule going to last all weekend long as far as practice is concerned?

3:51

I would say so.  Crowding up the track would not be a good idea – especially considering all of the spins and wrecks that have happened so far in practice.

3:51

Comment From Guest heard chad wood was also going to be helping someone there???

3:51

Chad Wood is helping out Ross Kenseth.

3:51

Comment From flyin brian doherty a johnny van doorn victory would be awesome

3:52

Jerrod Foley looks like he’s run a marathon.   The young driver and his crew have fought an up-hill battle all day after crashing their car during the warm-up laps prior to the morning’s first practice.Foley told us he had to replace the nose of the car, the bumper and all the support braces as well as the radiator and duct-work.

Foley is back in action though and has practiced a good deal since the incident.

3:53

Comment From Brandon Other then Augie Grill, is anyone else locked into the derby?

3:53

Not that we are aware of.  As we have seen in the past, even Kyle Busch will be sent home early from this race if he doesn’t qualify.

3:54

The caution is now out for a turn two spin by Jeremy Colangelo.  He did not appear to hit anything.

3:54

The green flag is back out.

3:54

Comment From Brandon ok, I wasn’t sure if Johanna was locked in for the Blizzard series championship. Thanks speed51

3:54

You are correct.  Johanna is locked in for the Blizzard Series championship.  Sorry for the brain fade.

Comment From Guest It’s great to see the participation and support of the cup series drivers, crews and families here at five flags. Says quite a bit about the track promoter and the increased interest in racing in general here in our neck of the woods.

3:56

Comment From Guest Seems like dry air and cold tires are making the track very slick today. Is that what you are hearing?

3:57

The caution is now out for the #88 of Roger Reuse, who spun at the end of the frontstretch but didn’t hit anything.

3:58

4:00

Comment From Debbie The practice times are posted near the Tech Shed, but I don’t think they have been uploaded to MyLaps all day. I’m not sure why times are not being posted.

4:00

That is because the timing and scoring personnel have been tied up with all of the on-track activity.  I’m sure it will be posted laster when practice is over.  The action is constant here today.

4:13

Comment From g armstrong is seth holbrook back with kyle busch? it looks like him in one of the pictures….

4:14

4:14

Qualifying tire selection for Snowball Derby teams is now taking place in the order of their qualifying draw.

4:19

There is now yellow tape being put up all around the pit area for Kyle Busch Motorsports.  We have no word whether someone has been shot there and they are sealing off the area for the CSI crew or if they just want to keep fans at bay.  We suspect the second reason to be the case. When asked about his cars today and their handling, Kyle just said one word.  “Junk.”

4:19

Comment From Kyle Davis This coverage is great by the way..Thank you Speed51

4:19

Comment From Phil Bozell Great coverage!!!! Keep up the good work and don’t feel bad about the cold weather it’s really snowing here in michigan good luck to all the michigan drivers down there wish we could be there!!!!

Comment From Guest Johnny Sauter is crew chief for Brian Scott

4:20

Yes, he is.

4:22

Comment From Guest what did kyle busch do with his snake he caught

4:22

That is a question we have been asked a lot during the coverage today.   To set the scene, yesterday Kyle Busch found a live snake in the infield and sent us a photo to post on our coverage (see yesterday’s Trackside Now coverage for that). After practice, we checked with Busch about the snake.

“One of my guys took it up to the grandstands and let it go,” said Busch with a smile, “so the fans in the stands better watch their ass!”

4:24

4:24

PHOTO: Kyle Busch’s team put crime scene-style tape around their pit area.   (51 Sports Photo)

4:25

We have noticed now that the tape has been taken down, so either a crime wasn’t commited or they were just trying to keep a few fans out of their pit area for a short bit.

Comment From Porter If Sterling Marlin actually shows up in Pensacola, PLEASE find the time to interview him. Listening to him talk is one of rare simple pleasures still left in life. Also, is Joe Shear Jr crewing for anyone down there this year, or did Ricky Brooks kick him out for good?

4:29

We have not seen Joe Shear, Jr. here in the pits.

4:29

Comment From Dredden Looks like Grant Enfingers track record will certainly fall (16.629). We may see 16.5’s or even a high 16.4!

4:29

Comment From Derby Guy Whatever happened to JR Norris? I for sure thought he would have a Snowball win underneath his belt by now.

4:29

Usually, JR Norris is here helping out the Richie Wauters team but we have not seen him yet this week.

4:29

Comment From Herb Shoe Maybe Kyle’s team should switch to Perfect Circle Chassis so his cars are no longer “junk”

4:30

Comment From Guest who is the crew cheif on the tim steel car

4:30

I think it is actually Tim Steele.

4:30

Comment From Kyle Davis Where’s Jason Hogan at?

4:30

We haven’t seen him here – so he is most likely in Georgia.

4:30

Comment From CF Great coverage but Busch needs to go home!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hes a no body there so many better drivers out ther

4:31

You have to give Kyle Busch credit though.  He’s spending his own money to come down here and race when he could be sitting on a tropical island somewhere instead right now.

4:31

Comment From Texasracing fan Good luck to all of the Texas drivers!!! Go

4:32

Comment From LeadSeventeen I see TJ is listed as the first plm car, does that mean he was fastest in the last session??

4:32

Yes, TJ Reaid was listed as the quickest Snowflake 100 entry in today’s final practice session.

4:32

We are now up to nearly 4,200 viewers of our Trackside Now coverage.  And this is only a practice day!

4:33

Comment From Buzz Do not let Mike Alexander get near any snakes this weekend. That is haw he hurt his knee prior to the W/C 300. I wihope he is doing well.

4:33

Comment From Sabrina Jason Hogan is helping the Steven Wallace team.

4:33

If you were standing by the #18 pit area waiting for Dave Mader III‘s car to be towed back to it’s spot, you were in the wrong place.   They are taking the car to the shop just down the road from here to see if they will be able to make repairs and return to the track tomorrow. Mader is slated to go out 40th in qualifying tomorrow night.Mader said he knows something broke in the rear of the car causing the crash.

We will have more from Mader later as he is one of the drivers that will do a daily video diary on Speed51.com during Derby week.

4:34

4:36

Our thoughts and prayers also go out to David Hole and his family.  David was here last night and we enjoyed talking to him, but this morning he got news of a death in the family and left to go home to Georgia.

PHOTO: Concord Speedway (NC) Pro Late Model regular Bobby Measmer is working hard with his team at Pensacola.   Later in the day the #14 car has found the speed they’ve been searching for.

4:37

Comment From Guest Better tell Brian Scott, Steven Wallace and Justin Drawdy that those Hamke chassis are junk- they seem to be pretty fast!

4:38

Bobby Gill had a pretty quick Hamke today too.

4:38

Comment From Kyle Callahan Any word on Scott Hantz, or Tom Thomas, or Brian Campbell.. Just checking in to see how the MI boys are doing — I like Jeff Choquette to win this one, also, is Wayne Anderson in the house?

4:40

Joe Shear Jr.  is working for Kyle Busch Motorsports as the crew chief for Brian Ickler this weekend.
