To say that PASS named this event correct as the “Southern Sizzler” is an understatement.   It is fairly warm here at the track.   Currently it is 83 degrees with an expected high of 88 degrees, with mostly sunny skies.

1:11

We do not have a car count for each class or a driver roster, but we do know that there are a ton of cars in the infield here at OCS.   Considering that there are seven divisions of cars racing here, it is a bit crowded.

1:13

Once it gets closer to race time, you can follow along with the action here at OCS two ways at the same time.   RaceTalkRadio.com will have live Internet radio coverage of the racing action tonight, so you can click to the site and listen along.   Also, you can keep it here as we will be typing updates throughout the entire night’s action, including the races.

1:15

The PASS South Super Late Models have been rolling around the infield and through tech early this afternoon. They are scheduled to go green flag with practice at 2pm.

1:17

We are going to head down to the pits for a short bit and try to get back up for an update before practice starts at 2pm.Keep your browser open to the Trackside Now and your speakers on.   When we get back to the keys and type an update, you will see it on your screen without hitting refresh and hear a typing tone.

1:49

Comment From Randy S. DurhamIf you could guess………about how many of the PASS cars are at the track? Thanks

1:50

We aren’t sure yet, but we can say there are over 20 PASS South Super Late Models parked on the front stretch.

1:51

One driver that is here making his Super Late Model debut is Alex Yontz.   The Late Model Stock driver is here for his PASS South debut.

1:53

We are under 10 minutes before the start of the practice sessions (full practice schedule listed earlier).   We are going to head trackside to take photos and see what is happening during the practice sessions. If we get times from the sessions, we will post them.   We will be back soon with more updates from Orange County Speedway.

3:24

The first round of practice for all divisions, except the Limiteds, have been completed.   The Limited are on the track currently.

3:24

Comment From Bob Dillner at the GlenWho was fast in the first round of practice?

3:24

We are going to see if we can get some times from the first round of Super Late Model practice.

3:26

During the first round, Cassius Clark had a bit of a problem.   The car went around the track with the rear end stuck out of the car.   They broke parts of the trailing arm area and had to come in to get it fixed. There was a scramble though as they didn’t have a replacement piece they needed and they had to check with many teams to see if they had one.   Finally they were able to find what they needed and Clark hopes the fix they did will work.

3:33

3:33

3:33

The second round of practice for the Super Late Models is hitting the track now.

3:33

Comment From DerekSo, how many SLMs are there? Any notable drivers missing or surprises?

3:34

We just got the driver roster right as the Supers were taking to the track for their first practice.   We will have the roster printed up shortly.

3:35

Before this second practice session started, we talked to a few drivers.

3:35

Spencer Wauters said his car is good today, unlike yesterday.   He had a power steering issue, but the team has replaced all the parts and is good to go today.

3:35

Ben Rowe said his car is just a bit free off the corner, but otherwise not bad.

3:36

Jeff Bolen, who is still fairly new to the PASS South Super Late Models, said his car is good, he just needs to work on the driver.

3:37

Preston Peltier, Justin Wakefield, Heath Hindman and Corey Williams all said their cars are “good” and really didn’t have much else to report.

3:39

For the Legends, Bandoleros and Pro Challenge, we do not have a car count quite yet, but it looks to be about 10 or so (maybe a few more or a few less) in each division.

3:46

There are 23 Super Late Models here.   A 24th, Gene Kirila, was here yesterday, but had problems and didn’t return. Here is the Super Late Model drivers that are here:

02 Tim Nooner
05 Alex Fleming
4N Ben Rowe
4S Jay Fogleman
5 Spencer Wauters
8 Cassius Clark
10 Ryan Blaney
14 Clete Caywood
16 Joey Coulter
18 Bradley McCaskill
23 Jimmy Weller
25 Jeff Bolen
26 Preston Peltier
35 Devin Jones
42 Tim Pinion
47 Corey Williams
48 John Batten
55 Alex Yontz
79 Chris Bowers
91 Heath Hindman
93 Tayla Orleans
98 Justin Wakefield
101 CJ Faison

3:47

One name that you will notice missing is Jeff Fultz.   According to some of the drivers that race under his assistance here in PASS South, he is at Hickory Motor Speedway (NC) helping out one of his other drivers there.

4:06

We were able to snag the top-five times from the first Super Late Model practice.1) 35 Devin Jones – 14.285
2) 47 Corey Williams – 14.372
3) 5 Spencer Wauters – 14.425
4) 98 Justin Wakefield – 14.454
5) 10 Ryan Blaney – 14.471

4:06

Comment From Bob Dillner at the GlenWhat a great mix of news and info between Speed51.com and RaceTalkRadio.com with their radio coverage of the event. I’ll be reading and listening.

4:08

You got it.I just talked to the guys upstairs that will be putting on the RaceTalkRadio.com coverage, which is Doc Love, Alan Dietz and Tony Stevens (with Dennis Michelsen back at the RTR headquarters in Illinois).   They will be going live at 7pm Eastern and covering all the races live on the radio tonight.

4:09

Comment From fanWhere’s Pope?

4:11

Michael Pope, driver of the #51 BDI Racing Chevy, is here, but not entered in the PASS South race.   The team had some issues on their northern trip, including bringing one car home wrecked and the other with a blown motor.   Both the damaged car and the engine are in the process of being repaired, and we hear from the team they will be entering the next PASS race at Hickory. So, why then is Pope here?   He is assisting his BDI Racing teammate Meghan Dillner, who is running the #51 Scott’s Chev-Stang in the Pro Challenge Series national feature tonight.

4:12

Comment From Elgin (Stat Boy)This is the second race of the weekend for Yontz, he was second last night in the UARA-Stars race at Ace Speedway. Brandon McReynolds won the race.

4:13

Thanks for the info Stat-Boy.

4:13

Comment From GuestHearing that Fogelman is going to a back up car – any idea why?

4:13

We haven’t talked to Jay Fogleman, but he does have two cars here.   We think he has only practiced one of the two.   When we get a chance, we will check with him.

Comment From MissaThank you for your coverage. Wish that I could be at the track, but I will have to be satisfied with your coverage and listening to the race on Race Talk radio sitting here in VA. Any information on Ryan Blaney?

4:17

We are gald you can join us.   Of course, the best way to watch the race is to be here, but if you can’t, the next best is to watch Trackside Now on Speed51.com and listen on RaceTalkRadio.com.

4:18

As far as Ryan Blaney, we haven’t spoken to him, but his car looked good in the practice sessions so far.

4:19

4:26

Speed51.com’s Trackside Now would like to welcome those from our sister site, LegendsNation.com, that might be following along with the coverage for some news and information on the Legends and Bandoleros racing here tonight.

4:29

While we do not have a driver roster for the Legends or Bandoleros, we can say that there is at least 12 (probably more) Legends Cars here, with Daniel Hemric (Pro) weighing in as a favorite to win tonight.   Others that are here include Tyler Lester, Harrison Rhodes, Tyler Kivett and Timmy Hill.

4:29

Comment From ocs fanwho is there in the bando? Is The 12 of Annabeth Barnes there if so good luck to the to her!

4:31

We have not seen Annabeth Barnes here.   There are maybe 10 or so of the Bandolero drivers here, which includes Justin Carroll, Grayson Massey, Luke Demis, Cody Wiles and others. The Bandoleros are currently on track for a practice session.

4:32

4:33

Comment From Heather PeltierI like the new format. It keeps you informed of what’s going better than the old format. It definitely be fun to keep up during race time! Thanks.

4:33

Thanks.   We appreciate the comments.

4:33

Comment From Corey LathamYou guys are doing a great job, was going to make the trip myself but things came up. Keep Doc and Alan in line for me, look forward to the updates.

4:34

Thanks Corey.   For those that aren’t aware, Corey is from race22.com, a really good short track site covering Late Model Stocks in the south.

4:46

The Super Late Models are on the track for their “scuff” practice.Unfortunately, we might not have any times for the other practice sessions due to an issue with timing and scoring at the moment.

4:48

4:49

PHOTO: Devin Jones was the fastest driver  in the first  Super Late Model practice.   (51 Sports Photo)

4:52

Someone apparently has a grill in the pit area, and those aren’t allowed.   They just called over the intercom for whomever is cooking out to put it out.

4:52

The Limiteds are on track for their final practice session of the day.

4:52

Comment From Rob StaleyGood luck to Grayson Massey in the bandoleros. Thanks for the coverage.

4:54

For those that aren’t aware, Grayson is a regular racer in the area, but he usually races next door at OCR Action Sports Park, the quarter-mile oval.   He is racing here today on the big track in his Bandolero.Of course, here on the big track, Bandoleros use restrictor plates to keep their speeds down.

4:57

As we sit up here in the media booth, we can see that some of the Super Late Model teams are just standing around and appear to be happy with their cars, while others are still working on them.   Spencer Wauters, Jay Fogleman and Joey Coulter are three of the drivers that have their cars up in the air as the teams get their cars ready for qualifying.

4:59

Comment From Rob StaleyHow many limiteds are there?

4:59

We just checked with scoring.   There are 14 Limiteds here.

5:02

Practice has been completed, except for the track allowing Pro Challenge driver Steven Bergh to scuff tires for five laps.

5:02

Comment From MissaGreeting from quickestlap.com, home of the Blaniacs.

Comment From TwistyGreat job with the updates on a hot Southern afternoon. I’m heading out to Beech Ridge with the family tonight to watch some True Value Modified Racing Series action, but I’ll be keeping up on what is going on at OC right here on my iPhone. With all of the drivers down there who have Maine connections, I’m sure that will make me a popular guy at the Ridge tonight.

6:17

Thanks Twist! Those that aren’t aware (which you should by now), that is Mike Twist, Editor of Speed51.com, who holds the fort down in our 51 North offices.Twist sent over a cool fact earlier today.   Cassius Clark, a north driver, posted on his facebook a photo of his trailer he is using to get down here: a snowmobile trailer.   Only in Maine would you have a driver haul a Super Late Model to the track in a Snowmobile trailer!

Enjoy Beech Ridge Twist!

6:24

For those that are not listening to the radio coverage, we are currently under a red flag for a wreck in the Limited late Model race.   Two cars wrecked pretty big in turn two.   We think both drivers are ok as they are trying to get the cars off the track now.

8:07

As you might see by the times, we are a bit behind in the racing action here at the track.   However, we aren’t going anywhere. The Limiteds are back going again here at OCS.

We have been under the red flag once again during the Limited race.   A car got into the wall off turn four and onto the front straightaway, getting up into the fence.   The driver was ok, but the back of his car and the fence were damaged.   The officials did a great job repairing the fence, but it set us back some time.

The PASS Trucks are just past the halfway mark.   Up front, it is a hardcore battle for the top spot between Grant Davidson, Michael Cooper and Clint King.

9:23

Grant Davison has won the PASS Trucks event.   He pulled away after halfway and won by a comfortable margin.   This was his fourth win of the season.Michael Cooper was second, followed by Clint King in third.

9:25

According to Tim Pinion’s facebook page, he blew a head gasket, which is why he was blowing smoke during his qualifying and why he left early instead of racing in tonight’s PASS South Super Late Model race.

10:48

Alex Fleming has pulled onto pit road.

10:48

It appears Alex Fleming is having some sort of right rear tire or wheel problem.

10:49

Alex Fleming  did get back on the track before they went green.

10:50

We were just about to go green, but Chris Bowers has stopped in turn one.

GREEN FLAG

10:51

Ryan Blaney has the lead with Preston Peltier second.   Justin Wakefield got a good jump on the restart and is third.

10:52

Joey Coulter has pulled his car down on pit road.

10:53

Joey Coulter has a flat right front tire.   The team took a while to change it, but he has made it back on the track.

10:53

Up front, with 26 laps in the books, Ryan Blaney is way out to a huge lead with Preston Peltier second and Justin Wakefield third.   Corey Williams is fourth with Alex Yontz looking under him, but still riding in fifth.

10:54

There are many drivers that are just pacing themselves at the moment, thinking the tires are going to fall off.   That could be trouble for Ryan Blaney as he doesn’t appear to be slowing down one bit.   He is almost a full straightaway ahead of the field.

10:56

Ryan Blaney is now passing the drivers at the back of the pack.

10:57

At lap 45, Ryan Blaney is a half lap up on second place.

10:58

Currently riding second is Preston Peltier.   Following him is Justin Wakefield, Corey Williams, Alex Yountz, Heath Hindman, Ben Rowe and Cassius Clark.

11:07

Bradley McCaskill’s crew has reported that they have fixed their brake problem, so now he will have to fight to get back on the lead lap as he just missed the lucky dog spot by one position.

11:07

GREEN FLAG

11:07

Preston Peltier has snagged the lead on the high side around Ryan Blaney.

11:09

Corey WIlliams is trying to work the high line to get around Preston Peltier for the lead, but hasn’t been able to get there yet.   Ryan Blaney, meanwhile, is working the inside of Williams, trying to get second.

11:10

11:11

We are halfway (75 laps).   Preston Peltier leads Ryan Blaney, Corey Williams, Justin Wakefield, Heath Hindman, Ben Rowe, ALex Yontz and Cassius Clark.

11:12

Ryan Blaney has been looking low on leader Preston Peltier, but Peltier still hold the top spot. These two drivers have had a history of getting together in PASS South competition.

11:16

Preston Peltier and Ryan Blaney have been somewhat side by side, and they are approaching traffic, so it is about to get interesting.

11:17

100 laps are down.   Up front, there hasn’t been a change.

PASS officials have docked Ryan Blaney for one lap for bringing out the intentional yellow.

11:25

During the yellow flag, Ryan Blaney pulled up alongside Preston Peltier, but we didn’t see any contact during the yellow.

11:26

Ryan Blaney is on pit road now, but according to the pit reporter, the tire is up.   It was bodywork that has come loose on his car.

11:26

Top five: Preston Peltier, Justin Wakefield, Corey Williams, Heath Hindman, Ben Rowe

Joey Coulter’s car is being loaded up on the hauler during this yellow.   Also, Clete Caywood’s car just got hauled back into the pits on a flatbed and the side of it is demolished.   Jimmy Weller is still on pit road as the team is working on the right front.   We do not think he will be back out.

11:38

Top five: Justin Wakefield, Preston Peltier, Corey Williams, Heath Hindman, Ben Rowe

11:42

Ryan Blaney was the lucky dog and got one of his two laps down back, but PASS officials said he has to earn the next lap up on his own since he lost one lap due to a penalty for stopping on the track to pull a yellow.

11:45

GREEN FLAG

11:47

Justin Wakefield once again got the lead on the jump.

11:53

Justin Wakefield, Heath Hindman and Preston Peltier have been three wide a few times over in turns one and two, but they still run in their respective positions.
