The 1969 Oxford Track Champion, Stan Timberlake, is going to be honored for his contributions to another sport in Maine later this summer. On August 5th, Timberlake will be inducted into the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame for his accomplishments as a Minor League baseball player. Timberlake ironically beat the man who would become the winningest driver in Oxford history to win that 1969 track title. Mike Rowe finished second to Timberlake while battling for what would have been his first ever championship. Rowe would go on to have a pretty good career at Oxford though – as he has won 150 races here at this track.

We’ve got great news to share – our Trackside Now coverage won’t end today now that practice for the TD Bank Oxford 250 is complete. We have just been cleared to bring you live coverage of tonight’s PASS North Super Late Model race. If you are anywhere near the Oxford Hills of Maine, we suggest that you log off your computer and come out to the racetrack because there’s no way that we can compete with actually being here to see the sights firsthand. But if you can’t make it to the track, or you hail from far away, settle in and enjoy our live updates tonight.

3:45
We just checked in with the team of Chris Smith.  They have told us that his #14 car is running pretty well so far in practice today, but they still want to make it better.  The team has been constantly adjusting it throughout practice.

There are no practice speeds today.  Cars did not have to run transponders during today’s optional practice session.

There is approximately 10 minutes left in this practice session.
3:28
Ben Ashline, who won the most recent ACT Late Model race here at Oxford as well as a recent Saturday night LM feature, had a great comment on his Facebook page a few minutes ago.

“Just finished one practice,” his comment said.  “The car feels like it is in left field, but we brought our glove and we are ready to play ball!”

3:26
Practice has been steady at this point. Tomorrow morning will be the time where cars are in and out quickly searching for speed.
3:23
Yes, Chris Smith has been out a few times.  The last time we saw his #14, his crew gave a quick look under the rear end between runs and he went back out.

3:05
There will probably be slightly more than 70 cars that attempt to qualify, but that number won’t be known until the qualifying draw takes place around lunchtime tomorrow.

Comment From Guest

how many cars are expected to try and qualify for this race total

Right now, there are 67 cars in the pits…unofficially.  We expect that to go up tomorrow by at least four or five cars.  We know that one of those will be Eddie MacDonald’s car.

Nobody has practiced the #17 Late Model of Eddie MacDonald.  It is sitting in its trailer still tied down at the moment.  Keep in mind, today is only an optional practice day so a team does not need to get on track at all today.

As practice motors on we are working on the driver roster.
1:18
Ben Rowe and Joey Pole are among the drivers out on the track at this moment.
1:17
Rowland Robinson, who ran very well in the most recent ACT Late Model race here at Oxford is taking it easy right now in practice.  His #28 Late Model is currently sitting on jackstands without any work begin done to it.
1:16
Vanna Brackett is hoping to become the first woman to qualify for the Oxford 250.  Karen Schultz, who raced in the NASCAR Dash Series, competed in the 250 back in 1989 but needed a provisional to get into the race.  Brackett has a proven track record at Oxford.  She won dozens of Ladies division feature races and moved up to the Strictly Stock division last season.  This year, she is a Late Model rookie.  She will be competing against her father Tim Brackett and brother T.J. Brackett this weekend.

Kudos to Speed 51 for this teriffic coverag!!Keep it up boys!!!

12:42
The track has not published or released an entry list yet.  We are compiling one by hand, but it might be a little bit later today before we have it because cars are spread out among three different pit areas here at Oxford.  We have a highly unofficial car count of approximately 65 cars so far.  Keep in mind, the race is technically only a one-day event.  All qualifying heats and races are scheduled for Sunday.  Today is only an optional practice and tech day.

Eddie MacDonald is the only driver entered this weekend who has won an Oxford 250 as a Late Model race.  MacDonald visited victory lane in 2009 and 2010 here.  The 2007 winner, Roger Brown, is no longer active in racing.  NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch won this event in 2008 and 2011 respectively, but they are not entered this weekend either.

An announcement has just been made that Jeff Burgess is looking for a driveshaft for his Late Model prior to practice starting.  His team is hoping that another team in the pits with a spare might be able to help him out.
12:06
Trevor Bayne was not at the track this morning as he was meeting fans and signing autographs at an Augusta, Maine Ford dealership.
12:05
Several drivers here today for 250 practice were on hand on Wednesday in Portland, Maine to meet members of the local media.  Eddie MacDonald, Ben Ashline, Tim Brackett, Vanna Brackett, Chris Coolidge and Austin Theriault were all part of the event.  Area TV stations and newspapers, along with Speed51.com, were there to talk with the drivers and track owner Bill Ryan.
12:03
Although the ACT Late Model teams were off last weekend, Joey Pole’s #97 team was not….and it had nothing to do with Late Model racing.  Pole, his father Joe and the team’s hauler were on loan to Star Speedway (NH) Modified driver Steve Dickey as Dickey made his NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour debut at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
12:01
Nick Sweet hasn’t turned a lap here at Oxford yet this weekend, but he’s already had a good week of racing.  Sweet won Thursday night’s Late Model feature at Thunder Road Speedbowl (VT) – where is is chasing this year’s “King of the Road” track championship.
