Speed51.com Trackside Now – 10/10/09 – Oktoberfest at LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway (WI) (Replay)

11:20

Hello everyone and welcome to Trackside Now at La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway and the 40th annual Octoberfest races.   Today there is a stout line-up of qualifying and races.   The ASA Midwest Tour will qualify and have heat races today in preparation for their 100-lap feature tomorrow.   Both the Big 8 Series an the ASA North Series will qualify this afternoon and race tonight.   It’s COLD here in La Crosse with temps hovering around 40degrees.   It seems the threat of snow has passed-HOPEFULLY!   The ASAMT cars are getting set to head out for their final practice, check back in a little while to see how the field is stacking up!

12:05

Update from the final ASA North Practice this morning…Jim Duchow fastest, Jacob Giede 2nd, Griffin McGrath 3rd, Ross Kenseth 4th and Steve Carlson 5th.

12:34

We are waiting on ASA Midwest Tour practice times….as we do that.. Big 8 qualifying gets under way!

12:46

ASA Midwest Tour final practice:   Tim Sauter is the fastest in the #23 Jay VanDerGeest car…He’s followed by Boris Jurkovic, Steve Calrson, Blake Brown, Kyle Calmes, and Chris Wimmer.   The ASA Midwest Tour qualifies in a little over an hour.

12:56

About halfway through Big 8 Qualifying and it’s Mike Ehde with the time to beat.   His lap of 20.381 is top of the charts for now.   Bradley Powell currently 2nd, Todd Oliver 3rd, Ty Reey 4th and Ross Kenseth, who has this year’s Big 8 Chmapionship locked, is 5th.   There’s still a bunch of cars to hit the track, so keep checking back for updates!

1:00

Steve Rubeck just knocked Edhe from the top spot. His time of 20.247 is now the one to beat!

1:31

Steve Rubeck holds on for fast time in Big 8 qualifying!   Edhe 2nd and Skylar Holzhausen jumps on the board in 3rd.

1:31

ASA North begins its qualifying effort

1:51

Steve Carlson has fast time for ASA North with just a few cars remaining.

3:10

ASA North Qualifying:   Steve Carlson holds on to the pole…Jacob Goede 2nd, Chris Eggleston 3rd, Griffin McGrath 4th and Ross Kenseth 5th.   Good effort by Eggleston who needs those points to keep his point lead!

3:16

For those who haven’t been following the ASA Midwest Tour points battle..there’s only 3 guys left who can wn the championship.   Coming in to Octoberfest Nat Haseleu holds a 10 point lead over Steve Carlson and a 52 point lead over Chris Wimmer.   Those are the only 3 who can mathematically win the championship

3:17

Now for the qualifying results….Steve Carlson also paces the field of the ASA Midwest Tour.   Another veteran, Steve Holzhausen, the only other guy to break in to the 18 secon bracket, is second.   Klye Calmes, Mike Carlson and Wimmer round out the top five.   Haseleu qualified 16th.

3:21

Now let’s break down the points.   Carlson gets 20 points for fast time, Wimmer gets 12 for his 5th place qualifying time and Haseleu gets just 2 points.   What that means…for the first time ALL season, Haseleu loses the point lead.   Going in to the heat races last today Carlson holds an 8 point lead on Haseleu a 50 point lead over Wimmer.

3:51

Big 8 qualifiers are next.   There will be 3 8-lap races with the top 2 advancing to tonight’s feature.   ASAMT fast heats will be after that

4:16

Kyle Shear wins the first Big 8 Qualifier, Dan Ryan finishes second.   Both of those drivers advance to tonight’s Big 8 feature.   2nd qualifier about to start

4:23

Rich Schumann Jr jumoed out to an early lead in the second Big 8 qualifier.   He had no problem taking the checkered flag.   Despite some pressure from Jesse Bernhagen, Cardell Potter was able to hold on 2 the 2nd spot and transfer in to the feature tonight.   One mre Big 8 qualifier and then ASAMT racing

4:38

final Big 8 qualifier…Todd Korish with the win.   Korish and Jimmy Dragich were battling for the lead…and I was writing and didn’t see what happened, but the caution flew an the 71 of ragich and the 33 of Matthew Henderson both pulled in to the pits.   Henderson with heavy right front damage and Dragich with minimal right side damage.   Dragish though unable to advance through the qualifier then and Andrew Kulka takes the second spot to advance.

4:50

Carlson, Haseleu, an Wimmer all in the first heat race.   Boris Jurkovic wins, haseleu 2nd, Calrson finishes 5th and Wimmer 6th after the inverted field.   What’s that mean for points?   Haseleu gets 18, Carlson 12 and Wimmer 10.   Carlson’s lead cut own to 2.

4:55

Mark Kraus wins the second ASAMT fast heat.   Neal Knoblock 2nd, Nick Murgic 3rd, Nick Neville 4th and Steve Holzhausen 5th.   ASAMT qualifiers are next

5:08

Just five laps in to the first ASAMT qualifier and things get dicey.   Tim SChendel gets the early lead with Jonathan Eilen 2nd and Donny Reuvers 3rd.   The top three transfer…but Skylar Holzhausen is knocking on the door.   Just now the caution flies, heavy, heavy damage to Eric Fransen’s #5 car, pretty much the whole left side is torn off.   As he got damage Ryan Johnson was hit and sent head first in the wall.   Both drivers are ok, but their machines will probably not make it back on the track today or even tomorrow.

5:09

5:33

Chris Weinkauf, winner of last night’s Dick Trickle 99, wins the second qualifier.   Jamie Iverson finishes second.   There was a heated battle between Jeff Storm and Gregg VanGool for the third spot and transfer spot.   They came off of turn four side by side to the checkers, with Storm edging VanGool to advance to the feature tomorrow.
