This past weekend, Johnny Fultz, 21 year old son of Super Late Model racer Jeff Fultz, was tragically killed in an automobile accident near the team’s race shop in Mooresville.   The viewing is set for Sunday with the funeral Monday, so many thought Jeff Fultz would not be here this weekend to race.Jeff Fultz is indeed here.   He told us that this is what he knows and being here is the right thing to do to keep his mind from racing.   He plans to fly to Ohio on Sunday, where the services will be held, after racing in the Super Late Model event on Saturday.

Here at Concord this weekend, the Modifieds occupy the infield.   That has the Super Late Models and the TBARA Sprints in the back pits.

12:18

Speaking of damage, we heard Preston Peltier wrecked his car twice yesterday during practice.   He is currently not here, but CRA has told us he is trying to get back here for qualifying.   If he doesn’t make it back, he will race the heats.

12:44

During this practice, Johanna Long spun on the back stretch, but she has been back out on the track as practice continues.

12:50

Comment From Duke – 51 Wish I was there with you guys today, have fun. So far, it looks like I can be there tomorrow as long as I keep going in the direction I’m going in today.

1:51

The TBARA Sprints have completed their practice.   The next practice for the Tour Mods will be starting shortly.

1:59

We weren’t the only ones that weren’t aware of the change in times for practice this morning.   WhenFrank Fleming heard the call for the Mods to go to the track for practice, he had to call his tire guy, who was still enroute to the track.   He got here 35 minutes into practice and was frantically mounting tires.Fleming went out late in practice and turned a few good laps on old tires.   He will have new rubber on for this current session.   He was not here at the track yesterday.

2:02

Here at Concord Speedway, there is an interesting debate in how many turns this place have.   Some drivers and teams call it a traditional four-turn track with a dog-leg on the back stretch.   Some say it is a three-turn track.   No matter what a team and driver considers it, the spotter and the driver have to be on the same page.

2:12

Tour Mod practice continues here at Concord Speedway.   There have been a couple spins on the track, one by Brian Dauzat and another by Bobby Grigas, but both were able to continue.

2:13

Comment From wayne Thanks for the good coverage. Looks like Cassius has it all on his shoulders this weekend. Then again the Fultz connection is looking good.

2:22

James Civali just spun off turn two, but got righted and we are still in Tour mod practice.

2:28

The Tour Mod final practice has concluded.   Next up is the Vintage Mods.

The SK Mods are now on the track for their second and final practice session.

Comment From Tony Where’s Devin Jones?

3:14

Devin Jones was here yesterday, practicing his #35 Super Late Model.   Unfortunately he is not here today and will not be racing this weekend.   About a month or so ago, Jones contracted the H1N1 Swine Flu, which took him out of his race car for a bit while he got better.   Whether that has returned or it is something else, Jones has a fever again and is currently on the way to the doctor’s office.

Per Tim Jones, Devin’s father, his next scheduled race was to be the Snowflake 100 at Five Flags Speedway (FL) as part of the Snowball Derby weekend, but that might not happen now as they want to make sure Devin gets completely well before getting back into a race car.

3:23

The SK Mod final practice has completed.   The Super Late Model practice is up next.

3:45

Johanna Long has looped her car around in turn four, but there doesn’t appear to be any damage.   She just hit the track, so we are not sure if her tires were cold and she just looped it or what.

Practice has been completed for the day.   Next up is qualifying, which is scheduled to start at 5pm.

5:05

Although the schedule says qualifying was supposed to begin about five minutes ago, the track is still silent.   We will let you know when they are rolling out.According to the schedule, SKs are first, followed by Super Late Models and Tour-Type Modifieds.

5:10

The delay could be the sun.   It can be blinding to the drivers as they exit turn one and two before the dog leg.   The sun should be going down behind the trees soon.

5:13

The SK Modifieds have made their way to the front stretch.

5:13

We are going to attempt to bring you live qualifying of the SKs, SLMs and Mods, as it happens here at the track.

5:34

2009 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Champ George Brunnhoelzl III is all smiles in the pit area.   Why? Because he is still pumped after winning the title.   However, Brunnhoelzl isn’t as pumped about qualifying. He told Speed51.com that for some reason his #28 doesn’t like sticker-tires. “I wish we could qualify on 60-lap tires,” said Brunnhoelzl.   “We’ll have a great car for the race though.”

5:37

Modified veteran George Kent is back behind the wheel of a Modified.   Kent is not pleased with his performance so far and says he is lacking power.“It’s been a few years since I’ve driven so I have to shake the rust off too,” said Kent.   This is the first time at Concord Speedway for “The Duke”   “I thought I had raced at every track in North Carolina but I guess I hadn’t run here.”

When asked about   the ultra-fast dogleg at Concord,  ‘The Duke’  replied “I’m not there yet.”

5:37

Rowan Pennink is a busy-guy this week pulling double-duty between his #93 Tour-Type Mod and SK-Mod. Rowan says it’s amazing how different driving both cars is. “The SK is all about momentum,” said Pennink.

5:38

Les Hinckley is the sort of guy who flies beneath the radar at times. Yes, he has a slick looking ride, but he’s also a laid-back dude.   We spent some time chatting with Les today while he leaned on his pit-box. Hinckley told us he is happy with his #06 Mod and is ready for qualifying. He made a sticker-run during practice today and was fast. The key… he told us that sticker run wasn’t a clean lap which means he could have more speed than he showed.

We have had a few questions on Bobby Grigas and why he didn’t qualify the SK Modified.   The team found they had a head gasket leaking, and decided that since they had a good Tour car, they were going to focus on that car instead of the SK.

6:22

Up next is the Tour Mod qualifying, which will be followed by heat races.

6:26

We want to take a moment and thank the over 2000 folks that are currently watching our coverage of the North South Shootout qualifying and heat race action.

Comment From Guest no lia

7:18

Donny Lia decided to not make the trip to this event.

7:25

However Lia will be down in Concord all next week as a guest of NASCAR leading up to the Championship banquet in Concord, NC

7:28

We thought heat races were in order, according to the revised schedule, but that has changed again.   The TBARA Sprints are now qualifying, which we were told they were only going to have eight-lap heats.

7:29

Rob Fuller has a lot of experience at Concord, He has run here in a Late Model before.   This is the first time he is wheeling a Modified at the Carolina 1/2-mile.   Veteran Mod-man Phil Moran is acting as Fuller’s crew chief and is actually glad that Fuller did not time-trial in the top-five. He knew he’d be fast but wanted him to get some valuable race-experience in a Mod during the heat-races.Fuller’s Troyer was fast today after drastically changing their setup. At first they were trying a coil-binding setup. They switched to a conventional approach and found speed right away.

We are working on what is going on with the heat races.   It seems we are having trouble getting a clear answer. For the Super Late Models, the top five in qualifying were locked into the show.   There will be three heats with the top five locking themselves into the field (6th – 20th).   21st and 22nd will come from a last chance race, and 23rd – 26th will come from provisionals.

For the SK and Tour Mods, all we know is that the top five are locked in and the rest will race heat races.   Beyond that, we are having trouble finding someone that knows exactly how many they are taking from the heats.

Dot Brunnhoelzl not only feeds her Mod-son, she feeds everybody. Shortly after giving speed51.com’s Matthew Dillner some homeade chicken soup, she fed Mod Driver JR Bertuccio meatballs. JR is a skinny fellow, he could use some home-cooking!

7:58

Josh Nichols came in shortly after JR to get some hot-chocolate. He was on-fire on the track. Nichols qualified 5th. The effort was a shock, even to the driver of the #6 Modified.“I got out of the car and walked over and congratulated George (Brunnhoelzl) on a good run. He said ‘not as good as you.’ I didn’t know what he meant.   He told me i was in the top-five.  I walked around the corner and looked at the scoreboard and saw myself up there and said holy-crap. I was surprised.”

7:59

For those just tuning in to our coverage, make sure to scroll through the whole day’s action as we have news, notes, practice times and qualifying times from some of the action here at Concord Speedway.
