Are they extending practice today because of the late start?

5:18
YELLOW FLAG:  Gary Putnam has spun the #77 in turn one.  He backed the car ever-so-slightly into the outside wall in turn one.  He was able to pull away and returned to the pit area.

Comment From Kevin Finney

Looking forward to the coverage all week. You always do a great job keeping us in the loop. It seems that the lap times are off quite a bit. Did it rain pretty hard for awhile?

4:18
We just had a spin as the 7 of Al Marmande spun in turn two. He got it back going and we are green again.
4:14
We have heard lots of guys will be here later in the week and some are sitting today out. So the answer is that think we will see a strong field as the week leads up to the 100 lapper.

3:44

Comment From scott

The act cars use a different crate engine with a 2 barrel carb

3:22
The ACT cars are on an  8-inch tire and stock shocks.  The Crates run a bigger tire and have more room to play with shocks and setup’s.
3:21
Comment From Rowdy51

Whats the differnece between the ACT cars and the Crate Late Model Class. I live in Maine and see the American canadian tour on a consistant basis.

Comment From Keith M

Huge Thanks to Speed 51 for all the great short track coverage the past couple of months. It sure helps with the winter blues up here in snowy Barrie Ontario Canada. Good luck to the Sunset Speedway Stayner Gang of Watson and Baker in the crates and all the Canadians that made the long trek south.

1:31
While the track is hot, the action is really in the tech line. Right now there are at least a half dozen Late Model looking to get things squared away before the circle the high banks of New Smynra.
1:29
The track has gone green here at New Smyrna. Right now Tigh Shaffer is the lone car on the 1/2 mile.

Great question.  Fifteen-year-old Floridian Stephen Nasse broke his left ankle while playing basketball last week.  He was originally told by doctors not to race this week and be off the ankle completely for seven weeks, but he’s on his way to the track as the crew gets the #51 Super Late Model ready.  He’s going to give it a shot to see how the ankle feels today.
1:18
Comment From Lou

Any updates on Stephen Nasse and his broken ankle? will he be competiting this week?

12:57
The New Smyrna Speedway flag man has made his way atop the flag stand.  We may be a few minutes away from the start of practice.
12:55
Comment From Duane

just checked the radar.. It looks clear right now for the rest of the day unless something pops up…

12:43
From our vantage point, we can see only one Tour-Type Modified team that has unloaded their car: the #22 of Chuck Hossfeld.
12:41
Grandstand gates are currently open and will be for practice today.  We have not received any word as far as when practice will start at this point, but we are efforting an answer to that question with our reporters in the pits.
12:40
Comment From Guest

any idea what time if they start that practice will be going and will the grandstands be open to watch practice like always…

12:39
Comment From Terry Roberts

Hello to everyone at Speed51. Great job as always and will be following you during the World Series.

12:38

It’s still up in the air.  Practice will not begin until the track is dry and cars have finished going through tech.  It was supposed to be somewhere between noon and 1pm, but the morning showers have delayed that.  It’s still not raining and the track is drying on its own as cars go through tech.
12:19

what time are they going to start practice for the day

Covering practice day for Speed51.com today are Matt “Duke” Kentfield and Elgin “Stat Boy” Traylor. Duke will be at the keys for the next little while Stat Boy snaps some photos in the pits. We’ll have a bunch of pictures throughout the day.

Yesterday in New Smyrna, many teams parked their rigs in the pit areas here at the track. We snapped a bunch of photos and put them in a Speed51.com Facebook Photo Gallery. Click here to view the gallery

12:13
That is too early to say. The ACT cars and Pro Trucks will all be in attendance later during World Series action and have not yet entered the pit area today, so it’s far too early to take a stab at all the car count numbers we’ll see for the next week and a half.
12:13
Comment From Brian P

Will this be the largest car count for the event when you include the ACT cars ??

12:11
Folks like scorer27 headed down to New Smyrna during Speedweeks – don’t be alarmed by today’s weather. Today is the only day in the long-term forecast where weather is an issue. Sunny skies and temperatures into the mid-and-upper-70’s are in the forecast deep into next week.
12:09
Comment From scorer27

Thanks 51 for being there for us. I wish I was at the Speedway now but work gets in the way of fun but I’ll be there in a few days!

12:09
There is no racing tonight, only practice for all divisions in attendance – the Super Late Models, Tour-Type Modifieds, Crate/Pro Late Models, Limited Late Models, SK Modifieds and the Florida/IMCA Modifieds.

As far as radio goes, stay tuned to our live coverage and Speed51.com for further announcements about our radio broadcast schedule during Smyrna Speedweeks.

11:55
Today was scheduled to have cars on the track as soon as cars went through tech inspection, at around 12 noon or 1pm, through 6 or 7pm tonight, according to track officials. But, early-morning rain showers have pushed things back a bit. It is currently not raining, but there are some puddles in the grass and sand areas inside the pit area. No track drying efforts are underway just yet, but only about half of the teams have unloaded their cars and started getting them ready for tech.
