Comment From Tim

Go Mark Keeler!!! Wish I could be there. Fantastic job this week speed51…thanks for being there!

6:09

Former ASA National Tour driver Robbie Pyle will be driving the #93 Super Late Model last night. “The Buckeye Bullet” ran last night’s SLM feature, but used that more as a practice session for tonight. Pyle has raced all over the country in his career, but had not hit the track at New Smyrna Speedway before yesterday.

“I guess this is another track to check off the list,” Pyle said.

Pyle reports that the car is handling very good, but might be a little down on power. He thinks that it will be fine for 100 laps tonight.

Pyle plans to do more racing this season, but doesn’t know what his schedule will be. He’ll drive a house car for Howe Racing Products, but right now that car hasn’t even been built yet. In fact, there might be two house cars built because the team is considering running events on the CRA/JEGS All-Stars Late Model Tour and in the CRA Super Series. Wherever he ends up though, Pyle will be happy.

“I’ll just show up where they tell me to and wear my green [Howe] T-Shirt,” said Pyle.

6:03

The #407 Super Late Model of Jason Vail has just been pulled out of the impound line. It is being pushed back to the outfield pit area by an UTV. He will almost certainly have to go to the rear of the field for breaking impound procedure.

6:00

Comment From Shep

Wishing Ryan & the RC Moore crew the best of luck in tonites 100 lapper!!!! Bring the hardware back!

6:00

Alan Bruns is a third driver who will need to go to the rear of the field for working on his car after the Super Late Model impound.

5:59

Justin Larson’s team is also working on their car after impound, so the #88 will also have to start at the rear of tonight’s Super Late Model race.

5:59

Super Late Model point leader Tim Russell will have to start at the rear of the field for tonight’s Rheem 100 after making an adjustment to his #36 machine. Cars were impounded after qualifying and teams were told they would be penalized if they worked on their cars.

5:57

Ryan Moore (left) and his father Kelly. (51 Photo)

5:57

Ryan Moore is within striking distance of the Super Late Model point lead as we enter the final race for the division tonight. But he’s not worrying about points. He wants to win tonight’s 100-lap feature, the biggest show of the week for the SLM racers.

“I want a bigger trophy,” said the driver who has already won two SLM features this week. “The other too are too small.”

5:50

Becca Kasten is still running her Midwestern engine in the #12 Super Late Model tonight. The team has a new McGunegill engine available to them and they debated this morning and whether or not to make an engine change. It was a hard decision according to Kasten, but they decided to keep the Midwestern engine in the car. The team had to put a lot of gear into the car and Kasten said it is a little slow through the middle of the corner as a result. She thinks it will be good for 100 laps though.

5:46

Tonight’s Rheem 100 is an impound race for the Super Late Models. After time trials, teams were told to line up their cars on pit road and will not be allowed to work on those machines before the feature.

5:45

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series rookie Johanna Long is here watching the races today. Long moved up to Trucks from Super Late Models and is the 2010 Snowball Derby winner. She has also raced at New Smyrna during Florida Speedweeks before. Long was running in the top 10 in the Truck race at Daytona last night before getting caught in a wreck.

Last night was a crazy one for the Tour-Type Modifieds and the SK Modifieds.  Ted Christopher won the Richie Evans Memorial and Earl Paules won the SK feature, but folks in the pits were talking not just about those wins, but about some of the on-track melees that happened between some of the Modified combatants.

Speed51.com caught up with all the major newsmakers from last night’s Modified features.

4:21

Time trials for the Pro Trucks are currently delayed as the track is being checked out.

We’ve heard that Earl Paules will re-number his SK Modified #81 and have someone run it as a “field filler.”  Gary Fountain’s SK Modified is still on site and unloaded, so he’ll likely start at the rear of the field after not qualifying.  The second Joe Brady car, driven throughout this week by Kevin Flockhart, is loaded up.

4:11

Comment From Jim

Are there only 7 modifiers racing tonight?

4:08

After a little bit of a lull, the track is getting busy again. The pace truck is about ready to lead the Pro Trucks out to hot lap before their qualifying session.

Canadian Cole Powell has been running the Crate Late Model division all week, but that class had its final race of Florida Speedweeks last night. So Powell went looking for a new race to enter. His #25 team considered moving up to the Super Late Model division, but did not feel that they would get enough of a weight break to be competitive. So they dropped down a class, changed tires and a few other things, and will enter tonight’s Limited Late Model main event.

“We’re already here and we’re 25 hours from home, so we might as well go for one more,” said Powell.

3:47

Bruce Gowland took a hard hit in the Super Late Model feature last night. Without a back-up #18 car to work with, his team has been hard at work trying to get their only car repaired for tonight’s 100-lap race.

One new entry tonight for the 100-lap Super Late Model race is that of Jason Vail. The Florida driver has not raced yet this week…or at all so far this year. Vail will be driving the #407 SLM tonight.

3:21

The second Brady Bunch entry, the #80 of Kevin Flockhart, is loaded onto its open trailer for its return to Massachusetts. Flockhart will not compete in the Tour-type Modified race this evening.

3:06

Paules is still in attendance with his Tour-Type Modified.  His SK Modified is under a car cover, but that division wrapped up last night with Paules going to victory lane for a second time this week.

3:06

Comment From AJ

Did Earl Paules pack up and leave early?

Speed51 on the keyboard & Mark Keeler at the mike has turned a good speedweeks into the best ever. Thanks for all the great work that y’all are doing.

2:44

Stephen Nasse will not be in the Super Late Model field tonight. He had engine trouble yesterday and the #51 team packed up and went home early.

2:43

We caught up with Burt Myers just a little bit ago, who told us that staying for tonight’s Tour-type Modified race was a no-brainer for him and his brother Jason.

“We aren’t going out like that,” said Burt referring to Friday’s night Richie Evans Memorial where both brothers went down a lap and struggled through the race.

Myers said that the team has been struggling with set-ups for New Smyrna and that the car has been tightening up on them.

2:17

Practice is now complete for the day.  There will be some down time until qualifying at 3:45.

The Tour-Type Modifieds just wrapped up a practice session.  Only two cars that went on track, Chuck Hossfeld (17.286) and Pat Emerling (17.442) had transponders mounted.  Both Burt and Jason Myers were on track without transponders.  Those four drivers, plus the two-car Joe Brady effort with Chrisopher and Kevin Flockhart in the #80, Earl Paules’ #8 and Gary Fountain’s SK Modified that will compete as a Tour-Type car this evening, are believed to be the only Modifieds on the property for tonight’s 25-lap finale.

1:28

Last night, the Richie Evans Memorial Tour-Type Modified race ended with Ted Christohper in Victory lane and several other drivers with some hurt cars and hurt pride.  Speed 51 Video is currently editing some videos from last night’s action and we’ll have them up shortly.

Several of the teams that competed in last night’s 100-lapper have packed up and headed home before tonight’s finale.  The Hillbilly Racing two-car stable, driven this week by James Civali and Justin Bonsignore are gone, as is the TS Haulers brigade with Ron Silk’s cars.  The Zacharias team has also left New Smyrna.  These drivers all had run-ins last night and we’ll be hearing more from them in video form in a little while.
