The day is a bit shorter than most since the Superbowl is tonight. The track wants to allow the racers and the fans to enjoy some racing today, the Superbowl tonight, and come back for more racing this week.
12:13
Even though Friday was a washout after practice, Saturday’s action made up for it. Check out yesterday’s Trackside Now to get caught up on the action so far here at New Smyrna Speedway:http://www.speed51.com/2010_Stories/Speedweeks/trackside_now_NSS_2_6_Saturday.html
12:19
Later today we will have some video highlights and photo galleries from yesterday’s action.Check out the New Smyrna Speedway Speed51.com index of info for more on what has happened here for the 2010 Speedweeks:

Comment From Racing Spectator

Do the Crates run today?

12:55
We have posted the schedule in an earlier entry. There are only four classes running features today: Late Models (Limited), Florida Mods, Sprints and Super Late Models.
12:55
Comment From Racing Spectator

You guys do a great job of keeping us in the frozen North of Nova Scotia up to date on what’s happening. Thanks !!!

12:57
Comment From Jerry Cayton

Jeff Choquette in my opinion is bad too the bone. It is too bad he cant get that monkey off his back. The kid can drive the wheels off a race car.

1:00
We saw Jeff Choquette at Pub 44 last night after the night’s action and he was still pretty miffed about losing the Super Late Model race last night. He felt that the track wasn’t quite ready to go and the leader on the inside has a severe disadvantage on the restarts since the outside groove is the place to be coming off turn four getting up to speed.Next year the leader will be able to choose inside or outside on the restart, so that issue will be eliminated.
1:07
The Mods have the track for practice. Even though the Tour Mods do not race, the track gives all divisions practice time if possible.

good coverage boyz & girlz go gettem #38 kirk hooker

1:31
We are currently working on getting answers on the DQs from yesterday and will have that this afternoon.
1:35
Comment From Kevin Howard

Why do they have to wait until next year to have lane choice? The leader should have his choice of lanes and with 5 to go, should go single file. He did get hammered.

1:36
We were told they are going by 2009 season rules for this year’s Speedweeks. They did double-file restarts all season. They did announce that in the 2010 local season here at NSS, they will do the choose, so they will use the 2010 season rules during the 2011 Speedweeks.
1:36
Rotating practice is still happening here at New Smyrna.
1:57
Comment From Kirk

Well is it legal to let the guy in 2nd by under caution so that you could start on the outside?

1:57
We do not think so, and if you were second, would you give up that spot to the leader?

2:00
Jessica Murphy had the Limited Late Model race all but won last night. The yellow came out on the final lap setting up a dash to a photo finish with J.R. Mickle. The Murphy team was the first ones in line to buy the photo from the track photographer Jim Jones. They look to use this as motivation for today’s feature.
2:02
The TBARA Sprints are getting ready for their final practice.

We are not sure. We are more focused on the racers here at New Smyrna. Check NASCAR.com for details on the Nationwide race.

Comment From racer #99

murphy got dq quilifyin last night how did she get her spot back we havent heard anything on this issue

2:18
Continuing with the Limited Late Models, last night several drivers had issues in tech with carburetors. Once officials were aware of the situation, they found that there was a discrepancy in the carburetors and are checking with manufactures to find the solution. So in order to be fair, the track re-instated all of those who were dq’ed until an answer can found to the issue.
2:20
Comment From Len T

I just heard that Brandon Watson got DQ’d for not using track fuel. They bought their barrel from a VP dealer down there, picked it up at Volusia dirt track.

2:20
We checked with officials. He was disqualified after testing the fuel for additives.

2:33
Practice has concluded. Qualifying is next.
2:34
Gary Putnam is driving the #7 Manion Modified. While there were rumors that Tim Brown was going to drive it, it is Putnam that will wheel it the beginning of the week.
2:36
Comment From Great White

Is speed51 radio going to cover any of the weeks events live?

2:38
You bet.  Speed 51 Radio will be on multiple times next week on RaceTalkRadio.com, including covering the big races towards the end of the New Smyrna Speedweeks.  If you are coming to the track, you will also be able to listen to us on scanner frequency 454.5000, thanks to Racing Electronics.

Comment From Lena Lang

Just curious . In the Super Late Model race last night , there was a car that had trouble on the last lap, AFTER the white flag had waved . I always thought that once the white flag has waved , that’s it , the race is over. Why didn’t they throw the yellow and the checkered ? Is that the track’s rule , or the divisions ? Just curious !!

2:59
I just had a conversation with Butch, who is the race director.  In situations like last night when a car is sideways and could be a safety issue, they throw the yellow on the last lap and will do a restart.  He would like it to be where the drivers run back to the checkered flag, but safety comes first, because, as he said, it only takes one time to not think that to have a serious issue. He also said that he knows that he cannot please everyone, so he does what he can do to be fair to the racers.  His favorite racer is any driver that comes through the gate, so calls like last night were not made based on who was leading at the time.

Shane Snipes just about lost it coming off turn four on his qualifying lap, but was able to complete his run.
3:04
Jeff Choquette is currently the fastest qualifier with about five cars left to go in qualifying for the Super Late Models.
3:05
Tim Russell just knocked Jeff Choquette off the top of the charts.  Three cars remain in qualifying.
3:06
We have found out that a lot of the DQs in the Florida Modifieds yesterday were due to frame height.
3:09
Tim Russell has set fast time in Super Late Model qualifying.  Jeff Choquette, Ryan Finney, David Rogers and Jack Landis round out the top five.We will have the complete qualifying results soon.

PHOTO: Drivers in the driver’s meeting.  (51 Sports Photo)
4:09
There have been a few changes announced during the driver’s meeting.  Yesterday, Jeff Choquette lead the Super Late Model race until a late yellow forced a green/white/checkered finish.  On the restart, Tim Russell, on the outside line, got the jump and won the race.  Choquette and other drivers feel that the outside line is the best line on restarts.Drivers voted, and they all wanted it to be the leader’s choice to choose inside or outside on restarts, so that is a new rule here starting tonight.  Also, because of this rule, the 100-lapper at the end of New Smyrna Speedweeks will now have double-file restarts.
4:09
The National Anthems have been sung, and the TBARA Sprints will be hitting the track now for their heat races.
4:11
Kelsey Steele felt something strange on her car during her qualifying run.  Even though she is new to Super Late Model racing, her driver instincts kicked in and they found a problem.  Something was wrong with the right front shock mount, causing a vibration.  The team is fixing what they need so she will be good to go for the race.
4:12
4:12
PHOTO: Tim Steele checks out the shock mounts on Kelsey’s car.  (51 Sports Photo)
4:14
Tim Russell was happy he won his second pole position of Speedweeks, but his goal isn’t to win all the poles during the time here at New Smyrna.”I would rather win all of the races,” said Russell.
4:17
While the drivers that are here to race tonight are getting ready to get rolling on the track, other drivers that have the night off are focused on the Superbowl.  Many drivers said they do not have a dog in the fight as their teams didn’t make it to the big show tonight, but each one has a different pick to win.  Dustin Delaney said he is cheering for the Saints while Ted Christopher is cheering for the Colts.Christopher was asked if he wanted to be an honorary Speed 51 reporter tonight.  He said if there isn’t any racing going on with him behind the wheel, he is gone from the track.
4:18
The TBARA Sprints heat race one is on the track.  We do not have a driver roster for these racers, but we will try to post who wins as it happens.
4:18
Comment From Greg Wood – CRA

I saw that rule change coming all the way from Indiana. Butch is a racer at heart, and he is very in tune to the racer’s wishes. I’m not really into changing the rules mid-stream, but, I’d say that’s a good call.

4:26
Comment From Racing97

GO LONNIE SOMMERVILLE! SHOW THEM AMERICAN’S HOW IT’S DONE!

4:26
Comment From DeMan951

Comment From Jerry Clayton

Are friday nights races going to be made up? If so when?

4:28
No, they will not be made up.
4:29
We have been told that the leader choose on restarts is for all divisions, not just Super Late Models, during the entire Speedweeks.
4:29
Comment From [email protected]

4:30
We believe so, but we aren’t sure.
4:31
We do not have a driver roster at this time for the TBARA racers.

4:44
JR McMickle, who won last night, is in the pits once again.  He is coming onto the track, but the field is getting the green flag.

Ben Kennedy has lead the first lap, but a three-wide battle for second shuffled Jessica Murphy to the second position.  Meanwhile, JR McMichle is about three-quarters of a lap down to the field.

John Hanen is slow around the track.
4:47
Ben Kennedy still leads the field at lap six, but Jessica Murphy has been pressuring him for the lead.

Kirk Hooker was not penalized after they determined the other car broke.

We have found out that in fact the top-five cars were DQed due to being too soft on the tire durometer check.  The win will go to Lonnie Sommerville.  We will have a full rundown here shortly.

According to what we found out, only the top five went to tech.  After they were thrown out, sixth, seventh and eighth were checked.  BJ McLeod’s tires they checked in his pit since he was close to tech, Brian Finney came down to the tech area with his car, and Lonnie Sommerville’s tires were brought to the tech shed on a cart by Gary Crooks.  All passed the test and the results are official.
