10:03

Today’s Modified event will be a 200-lap event.   Last year it was a 300-lap event, but this year’s Made In America 300 event is made up of a 50-lap feature and two 25-lap heat races for NASCAR Whelen All American Limited Late Model cars.   We invite you to switch over to Race22.com to see the action of those events as we will be focusing on Modifieds today at Martinsville.

10:07

The pre-race practice is in the books and now the Modified drivers will focus on qualifying at 11:45am.   The race is scheduled to go off around 3pm.

11:34

Today’s race will have a big impact on the point standings in both the north and the south.   Even though drivers will earn points in their respected division there will be a big sigh of relief from the points leaders (Ted Christopher in the north) and (George Brunnhoelzl III in the south).   Qualifying will be getting under way in a few moments and we will be back at the conclusion of time trials.

Today is a big day for Burt Myers, last year he took the checkered flag on the track and then lost the win in post-race tech.   It’s been a year now and Myers has run well at  Bowman Gray Stadium (NC) and in the south, but a solid finish or a win today would really go along way after last year’s painful finish here at Martinsville. A draw shuffled the top six positions and   Brian Loftin will now lead the field to the green.   He was the highest finishing driver from the south a year ago.  Rowan Pennink will go off second and fellow southern driver Burt Myers will start third. All 43 cars will start, including the last three who did not take time during qualifying.

1:09

In case your wondering what happened to Ted Christopher in qualifying he slid up out of the groove in the first turn killing any shot he had on his second lap.   His first lap was only good enough for 14th on the grid.   He’ll have to make some moves to pick up another Martinsville win.

1:16

1:16

Things are really looking good for Ronnie Silk right now, after his win at New Hampshire Motor Speedway; he came to Martinsville Speedway and won the pole for the Made in America 300.   That good news along lines of statistics is that each of the last two races here at Martinsville has been won from the pole. (Jim DuPont Photo)

1:22

The track is busy with activity for the Limited Late Models, we invite you to switch over to Race22.com to catch up on the action of their happening here today at Martinsville.

1:58

Comment From Guest why no reggie

1:58

We are not sure why Reggie Ruggiero is not here this year.   He had a great run last week at New Hampshire and he even ran well here last year.   Looking at the results from last year, we see that both third-place finisher Matt Hirschman and fourth-place finisher Ruggiero are not here racing today.

1:59

We have moved from the infield to our spot in the tower off turn’s one and two.   We will have a birds eye view of all the action.

2:13

The Modifieds are on the frontstretch for the pre-race autograph session.   The feature is expected to roll off at 3pm.

2:24

Today will be the 34th race here at Martinsville for the Whelen Modifieds.   There have been some brief absences from the Martinsville track over the years, but it has returned as one of the bigger races on the schedule.   The Modifieds have been featured on SPEED-TV’s this season at New Hampshire and Bristol.  We are sure the fans that are in the north watching today would love see this race on TV in the future.

2:43

Andy Seuss is a New Hampshire driver who is running on the Southern Tour with Riggs Racing.   He has been very hot the last few weeks with wins at Myrtle Beach and Caraway.   He still sits 125 points behind George Brunnhoelzl III.Seuss told Speed 51 Radio on Wednesday that he ask Brunnhoelzl if he was ever going to have a problem this season.   The two have had a lot fun racing together this season.

In the north, the story is different; Donny Lia is chasing Ted Christopher for the Championship as they each seek their second crown.   They have established a great rivalry that makes the north series all the more fun to watch.   Will we see fireworks on the track today?    We’ll find out.

2:47

We are being told that the start time will now be closer to 3:30pm.   Still not bad considering that nearly 100 cars have been on track today.

3:00

We see our poll is starting to lean to the south a bit.    The mid 80’s  was the last time  a southern driver has won a race here at Martinsville.

3:09

Comment From yucaipa I think this race needs to be run on a cup weekend. They deserve better exposure.

3:10

Driver introductions are going on right now.   We are just a few minutes from the command to fire engines.

3:55

This is the tail end of the wreck, thanks to Race22.com for the photo. The backstretch is still a mess and this will take a few minutes.

3:57

One of our readers asked for a field rundown, there are cars all over the track with the red flag out.   We’ll do our best to get something when we go back yellow, but it’s a mess on the track as the leaders are in three and the rest of the field is in the pits or in turn two.

4:03

We have been told that the drivers involved are ok, some were check at the infield care center.

4:04

We are unsure what caused the wreck, it was back in the pack and it was pinball off turn two.

4:18

Pennink now has a few car lengths on Lia for the lead.

4:19

Brian Loftin is sliding back in the pack, last check had him in 14th in line.

Here are the unofficial results as Mike Stefanik at the young age of 51 wins at Martinsville Speedway for the fifth time in his career.   He said in victory lane he’s not quite ready to get out of that driver seat, especially when he can still win.Burt Myers was the highest finishing Southern driver so he will get credit for the win in the south.   You can here more from him and other drivers about the happenings at Martinsville later this week on Speed51.com.
