This is the second race on the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour schedule. A couple weeks back, teams competed at Caraway speedway for the season opener. George Brunnhoelzl won the main event over Tim Brown, Thomas Stinson, LW Miller and James Civali.

One big surprise in Modified qualifying today was LW Miller’s relatively poor performance. The former Modified champion said the car was wicked loose and the tires didn’t come in until coming off turn four on the second lap.

Despite the fact that the 2006 NWSMT race at Hickory went caution free, their was still plenty of action on the track. Six different drivers exchanged the lead thirteen times.

The last Nascar Whelen Southern Modified Tour race to run at Hickory was back in 2006. The race was won by Junior Miller, followed by Tim Brown, Burt Myers and LW Miller. Junior Miller is not here tonight to defend his title. The 2006 race ran caution free and all 150 laps were completed in 39 minutes.

At the drivers meeting this morning the topic of discussion was unapproved tire changes. During the first race at Caraway, Burt Myers swapped tires, which was an unapproved tire change. He was penalized 2 laps over the incident, but several drivers today voiced their opinion that the penalty was not harsh enough. After some argument and discussion, it was announced today that the punishment for swapping tires would be a 5 lap penalty.
