what is the quaifing order

10:51
ACT Late Model standout Joey Pole and his father Joe are both turning wrenches on the #19 Modified of Steve Dickey today. Their hauler is also being borrowed by Dickey for this event.
10:50
Teddy Bear Pools is a sponsor today on the #51 Modified of Justin Bonsignore. Longtime Modified fans might remember that Teddy Bear Pools was a longtime sponsor on the legendary Mario Fiore-owned #44 Modifieds driven to much success by Reggie Ruggiero. Those cars even featured a paint scheme featuring blue waves back in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s – before such fancy graphics became common in racing. Ruggiero is still involved in the sport today as partners with Eddie Flemke, Jr. in the Raceworks chassis building operation. Fiore still attends races and was the grand marshall of the recent SBM 125 open show at Star Speedway (NH).

Comment From Roger Mac

Question for you guys and maybe NASCAR will have to give you the explanation…this Steve Dickey guy has never run a Tour race before, yet was approved to run NHMS? I’m all for cars to fill fields, but he’s quite a bit off the pace. You used to need to run a few short tracks to be approved NHMS. I just don’t want anyone getting hurt due to inexperience

9:31
This is Steve Dickey’s first NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race. He has plenty of experience in various divisions of racing at various New Hampshire short tracks. He is currently a regular in the Tour-type Modified division at Star Speedway and has won a feature there this year. I believe he also raced an ACT Late Model at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway (ME) a few years back as a teammate to Joey Pole, but my memory could be a bit fuzzy on that.

I cannot speak for NASCAR, but I do know that typically they review a driver’s resume before clearing him or her to race. Sometimes they might require a start on a small track and sometimes not. I know that Dickey went through this process and was cleared to race here by NASCAR a few weeks ago. I’ll speculate that being able to win in a full-blown Modified helped his cause. He was off the pace in practice, but that does not mean as much as you might think. Often, it is a smarter for a driver to not try to be a hero or go fast in their debut race. That can lead to them getting in over their heads and causing trouble. NASCAR has a minimum speed and I’m sure if Dickey is below that he will get black-flagged. It also should be pointed out that Dickey runs on a tight budget and the fact that his car is off the pace might have something to do with equipment as well. Like it or not, there are definite “haves” and “have nots” in the pits area for this and just about every other short track tour. I’d say it is safe to put Dickey’s team into that latter category at this point.

Normally, weather can be an issue during the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour appearances at New Hampshire Motor Speedway and it is again today – but not in its usual way. The chance of rain is actually low today and there are barely any clouds in the sky. So running the race on schedule shouldn’t be an issue. However, heat and humidity might be. Teams will be pitting their cars and working in temps that are expected to max out in the mid 90’s today with an uncomfortable level of humidity. NHMS provides misters under the grandstand areas to help fans cope with the heat, but for the crews keeping cool will be much more of a challenge.
