Speed51.com Trackside Now – 9/19/09 – NASCAR Southern Modifieds at Caraway Speedway (NC) (Replay)

4:04

Welcome to Speed51.com’s Trackside Now coverage of the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour “Caraway Classic 150” event from Caraway Speedway in Asheboro, North Carolina.   I am Jason “Stix” Buckley, and I am here keeping you up with the action here as we bring you news and information before, during and after the race.

4:06

The pit gates opened at 2:00pm today with practice for the Modifieds to take place from 4:30pm – 5:15pm.   Qualifying will kick off at 6:30pm with the racing action at 8:00pm.

4:08

The weather here in Asheboro is overcast currently.   There are some rain clouds around the area, and, in fact, on our drive up here from Concord, we got a little wet, but so far it hasn’t rained at the track.   Everyone is pretty well positive we will get this race in tonight.

4:17

There are 17 Modifieds here for tonight’s 150-lap event.   We will have a full rundown after practice.Of note, LW Miller is not here.   We aren’t sure why, but we have heard that he might not come back and race with the series the rest of the year. Also, Rich Kuiken is out of the #44 car.   According to NASCAR, it appears it is a financial issue.   John Brown is in that ride instead.

4:18

We are just about 10 minutes from the 45 minute practice session, so we are heading trackside.   We will have more shortly.

4:59

5:00

PHOTO:   Andy Seuss is racing at Caraway, but the car he normally pilots was still competing up at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.   Eddie MacDonald hopped in Seuss’ #70 but unfortunately crashed hard.   (51Sports Photo)

5:35

We are back after the practice.   We apologize for the delay as we were caught in the infield while the local drivers practiced.   That gave us time to chat with a few drivers.   We will have that and more information shortly.

5:38

We want to thank Matt Dillner for jumping on our updates here in NC from NH to post the photo of the Seuss #70 machine, driven by Eddie MacDonald up in the WMT race today. In fact, it has been a busy day of race coverage already here on Speed51.com as Bob Dillner, Matt Dillner, Mike Twist and Matt “Duke” Kentfield have been at New Hampshire Motor Speedway (NH) covering all the action from there this weekend.   Today, the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour and ACT Late Models are racing there. The action of the WMT was covered on Trackside Now earlier this afternoon.   Ronnie Silk  won that event.   You can check out all the action from the day by clicking here:
http://www.speed51.com/2009_Stories/Mods_WMT/trackside_now_NHMS_Sat_9-19.html
The ACT Late Model event will take place yet this afternoon and can be heard on RaceTalkRadio.comas a Speed 51 Production by going to www.racetalkradio.com.

5:50

We have left a voice mail with LW Miller.   If he calls back before the end of our Trackside Now coverage today, we will post on why he is not here.

5:53

During the practice session, INEX Executive Director Darrel Krentz, who sometimes jumps back into his #15 Modified, went from happy to sad in just a few minutes. Krentz was just getting up to speed when his car started smoking.   He pulled it into the pits, and the crew determined it shot a rod out of the motor, ending his day.

Also during practice, Bryan Dauzat went for a spin off turn four, tagging the inside wall on the front stretch.   Dauzat said his car just got loose off the corner. His team is still repairing his car while the other drivers are lining up for qualifying.

6:04

Andy Seuss was all smiles in his car earlier today.   It might be an odd sight to see him smile since the last time he was here, he had trouble.   Also, his family car, driven by Eddie MacDonald, ended up trashed today up in New Hampshire.   We told Seuss that maybe his family’s #70 team took the brunt of the bad luck today and that maybe he won’t have any.   He liked that thought process.

6:08

Buddy Emory didn’t have too much to say about his car during practice, other than saying it was alright. He said he was on old tires, so he won’t know until later on how fast it really is.

Jonathan Brown told us he is a little tight in the #44 machine.   He said he found out at 11pm on Thursday that he was going to race in the car this weekend.   He also told Speed51.com that he will be in the car the next two races, and if he gets the money needed, he will be in the car the rest of the year.

JR Bertuccio has made his way back to the Tour.   He was working on his car, but we did stick our heads in to see how he was doing.   He was short with his answer: “good.”

Current points leader George Brunnhoelzl III  is hoping to go back to victory lane tonight after winning last weekend’s race here at the same track.   He said his car was neutral and wasn’t fighting anything with it.

In the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour, the fast qualifier draws a pill to determine how many cars have to redraw for position – whether it is six, eight or 10.   Six was pulled, so the top six redrew. After the redraw, the top six are now:1) Andy Seuss
2) Burt Myers
3) George Brunnhoelzl
4) Brian Loftin
5) John Smith
6) Jason MyersBefore the start of the race, we will list the entire starting grid in order.

6:59

We have a few pieces of news to throw at you while we wait for the start of tonight’s race.

7:04

LW Miller is at a sporting event tonight.   He is currently at a local Football game, watching his girlfriend’s son play football.Miller told us via phone this evening that he isn’t here because his car owner has pretty well had enough of NASCAR for the year.   Miller said that after a dispute last week with NASCAR officials, Danny Baker, owner of the #36 Baker Motorsports car that Miller drives, has decided to park his car for the rest of the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour schedule.Miller said that he is still a Baker Motorsports driver, but might enter a race or two towards the end of the year with another team.   Prior to tonight’s race, Miller was fifth in the championship standings. We will have more on this story next week on Speed51.com.

7:11

A rumor has been circulating the Modified nation about the future of the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour.   The rumor, which we heard of this weekend (but Burt Myers said he heard the rumor a few weeks ago) was that the Southern Tour was going to disappear in 2010, and NASCAR was going to only have one tour with it dipping into the south for approximately three races. We talked to Sherry Clifton, Series Director of the NWSMT.   She said that the rumors are not true, and that they have a series rules meeting scheduled in two weeks to go over the 2010 season.   She said that they have already been discussing the 2010 season with tracks for scheduling purposes.

7:13

The fan meet and greet is taking place.   We are going to head down trackside and mingle with the fans and the drivers prior to tonight’s race.   We will be back before 8pm.

7:49

We are back up in our perch in the media tower as the fans are  back in their seats and the drivers are getting ready to race.

7:51

J R Bertuccio told us during the fan meet and greet that he was hoping to race in New Hampshire today, but they didn’t get their big motor in that they wanted for that race, so they are here instead.   He did say he is planning on running the rest of the Southern Tour this year.

7:58

After a great rendition of the National Anthem by artist Cher, we are about ready to rock and roll.Ok, Cher is not here, but they played a recording of her singing the National Anthem.

8:00

The engines are fired and we are ready to race tonight.

8:03

GREEN FLAG

8:03

Burt Myers got the jump on the outside and took the lead on lap one from Andy Seuss.

8:05

We are five laps into the 150-lap race.   Burt Myers still leads with Andy Seuss second.   Brian Loftin and George Brunnhoelzl are side by side for fourth.

8:05

Andy Seuss is trying to pass Burt Myers on the outside for the lead.   They are side by side at the line.

8:06

After a few laps of side by side racing, Andy Seuss has taken the lead at lap 10.   Burt Myers is second, Brian Loftin third, George Brunnhoelzl fourth and John Smith fifth.

8:07

Brian Loftin has worked his way to second and is stalking leader Andy Seuss.   13 laps are on the board.

8:08

The leaders are lapping Mike Norman, who has been off all day and almost wrecked a few times in practice.

8:09

Brian Loftin had a run on Andy Seuss, but would have had to dive bomb him a bit in turn three, so he backed out and still runs second with 20 laps complete.   Burt Myers, George Brunnhoelzl and John Smith are the rest of the top five.   Jason Myers is right behind in sixth.

8:10

It is pretty well single file all the way around the track, but that doesn’t mean the drivers are taking it easy.   Each driver looks like they are ready to pounce for position if someone gets crossed up.

8:12

Of note, Lee Jeffreys is in the pits and is done for the night with engine issues.

8:15

The top two drivers have skated off from the rest of the pack just a bit.   Andy Seuss still leads with Brian Loftin about a car length behind.   Burt Myers, George Brunnhoelzl, John Smith, Jason Myers, Frank Fleming, Jonathan Brown, Buddy Emory and J R Burtuccio round out the top 10 with 43 laps down.

8:18

Many of the drivers appear to be in conservation mode at the moment as they do not want to use up their tires before the end of the race.

8:19

Andy Seuss has pulled away now to about a second and a half lead over Brian Loftin.

8:21

Andy Seuss is in heavy lapped traffic currently racing around Jay Mize, Gene Pack and J R Burtuccio.

8:24

We have hit lap 75, which is the halfway point of tonight’s 150-lap event.   We have been clean and green so far with Andy Seuss leading Brian Loftin, Burt Myers, George Brunnhoelzl and John Smith.

8:28

If this race goes caution free, which hasn’t happened this year in the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour, it would set a time and speed record.   The current record is 44.30 minutes with an average speed of 90.977 mph.

8:28

Comment From “HIGH AND OUTSIDE” awsome coverage

8:28

Comment From Guest We are here in the Seuss motorhome at NHMS

8:29

George Brunnhoelzl has worked his way around Burt Myers on the outside for the third position at lap 93.

8:32

Lap 100 is up on the board.   Andy Seuss still leads with nearly a three second lead over Brian Loftin.   George Brunnhoelzl is third, but is about a half track behind leader Seuss.   Burt Myers is fourth with John Smith in fifth.

8:34

Jason Myers has worked his way around John Smith to take the fifth pisition at lap 112.

8:36

The current cars on the lead lap (seven) at lap 115: Andy Seuss, Brian Loftin, George Brunnhoelzl, Burt Myers, Jason Myers, John Smith, Frank Fleming.

Comment From jimmy39 great coverage

8:37

Andy Seuss has lapped seventh-place racer Frank Fleming as well as sixth-place runner John Smith.

8:38

YELLOW FLAG: LAP 123Tommy Neal has spun his car on the backstretch, coming to a stop on the inside.   We do not think there was any contact on the track.

8:40

Because John Smith was “trapped,” according to the officials, he will be back on the lead lap.   Frank Fleming got the lucky dog, so there will be seven cars on the lead lap.Running order (lead lap cars only): 1) Andy Seuss 2) Brian Loftin 3) George Brunnhoelzl 4) Burt Myers 5) Jason Myers 6) John Smith 7) Frank Fleming

8:41

John Smith has made his way onto pit road.

8:42

As John Smith pulls back out of the pits, Burt Myers has made his way on to pit road.   Myters’ team swapped the left side tires, front to back.   In the NWSMT, it is a four-tire rule, but you can swap the tires front to back if they are on the same side of the car.

8:44

The restart order: 1) Andy Seuss 2) Brian Loftin 3) George Brunnhoelzl 4) Jason Myers 5) John Smith 6) Burt Myers 7) Frank Fleming

8:44

GREEN FLAG: LAP 132

8:44

ANdy Seuss has jumped out to the lead over the rest of the field with George Brunnhoelzl moving his way into second.

8:45

After the restart, Brian Loftin is third with Burt Myers fourth and Jason Myers fifth.

8:46

John Smith has slowed, but is still working his way around the track.

8:47

With 10 laps to go, the top five all have a few car lengths between them.   It is Andy Seuss followed by George Brunnhoelzl, Brian Loftin, Burt Myers and Jason Myers.

8:47

Frank Fleming is in sixth as John Smith has been lapped.

8:48

Under five laps remain.   It is Andy Seuss’ race to lose as he has a decent lead over George Brunnhoelzl.

8:49

The white flag is in the air for Andy Seuss.

8:50

CHECKERED FLAGAndy Seuss has won the Caraway Classic 150 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour event, his fourth win of the 2009 season. Also, of note, the flagman dropped the checkered flag right after Seuss crossed the line.We are heading trackside.   We will be back with more after a bit.
