That ends out day here at New Hampshire Motor Speedway as Brett Moffitt sets up a big race next Friday in Dover as he and Max Gresham will go toe-to-toe for the championship. We'll be back tomorrow for the Modified and ACT events here at New Hampshire.

Darrell Wallace Jr (finished 3rd):
"It was good to get the pole and set the track record yesterday and then lead a few laps today for points. But we just got tight in the corners entry to center and had to fight that. So I just rode in third without much pressure behind me so I just focused on the two ahead of me and what I had to do to catch them."

Sergio Pena (finished 2nd):

"I'm pretty excited. In practice yesterday we weren't that fast but they guys worked really hard on the car and we qualified fifth. And the whole time we knew the rain was coming so they were telling me to go. So I got to second and tried to catch the #00 but they're always fast and congrats to them, I know this is a big win for them in the championship run."

6:44
Here's what Brett Moffitt had to say in Victory Lane :

"This team did a phenomenal job bringing car here to win. We went out and did what we needed to do for points to try and win this championship. I’ve had enough second place finishes here and a few pole awards but never a win so I’m excited to get a piece of granite from New Hampshire Motor Speedway."

6:41
With this win and presumably leading the most laps that was exactly the day Moffitt needed to have in his points battle against Max Gresham who finished seventh.

Good Luck Max Gresham!!!!

Sprint FanView just interviewed Eddie MacDonald on the big-screen here at NHMS. He is already sitting inside his racecar.
5:02
Jet dryers are still on track as the pace truck also makes a few laps.
4:46
As the remaining five Sprint Cup qualifiers have covered there cars, so have a few of the K&N East cars on pit road. The good news is that we are hearing it just just a pesky misting rain out right now.
4:43
Due to the delay in Sprint Cup Series qualifying due to the sprinkling rain, the Nascar Hometracks Radio broadcast will be delayed as well. We will be sure to update on the latest start time as soon as it is determined.
4:38
The jet dryers have just pulled onto the track to try and get the track cleared up to conclude Sprint Cup qualifying.
4:37
Driver introductions for the K&N East Series are scheduled for 4:45pm but with rain coming down and the Sprint Cup cars still not done with their qualifying, it doesn't look like that's going to go as planned.
4:27
Unfortunately the rain drops have started to fall here at New Hampshire Motor Speedway and they have stopped Sprint Cup qualifying with five cars to go. Officials are on the track surveying the situation before continuing with the remainder of qualifying.

Hopefully SuperShoe (Corey LaJoie) can get his first win today. Kid had great talent and a W is well overdue. He does good there.

4:02
There are currently 19 cars left to go in Sprint Cup Series qualifying.
4:01
The car covers are being removed from the K&N Pro Series East cars on pit road as teams have been told that they will roll off for their 125-lap event at the conclusion of Sprint Cup Series qualifying, which will likely be shortly before the originally scheduled 5pm start time.
3:58
The K&N Pro Series East's most visited track, the New Hampshire Motor Speedway, was built in 1989 and officially opened in June of 1990. It is a 1.058-mile asphalt oval with 2-7 degrees of banking in the turns.

Previously mentioned Gresham and Moffitt, who were teammates at Joe Gibbs Racing in the K&N Pro Series East in 2010, are now the two front runners in the series' championship this season. Going into the New Hampshire 125 in just over an hour, Gresham leads Moffitt by 65 points and would need to win the event and Moffitt to finish 35th or worse to clinch the championship over Moffitt here today. Otherwise the battle will likely be settled in the season finale at Dover International Speedway in one week.
3:49
When the series visited NHMS in July, Max Gresham took the pole and the win. Gresham will start fourth in this afternoon's event.
3:48
In this race last year Brett Moffitt sat on the pole in the Joe Gibbs Racing #20 entry (with a time of 29.863), but the race was won by Ryan Truex in the #00 Michael Waltrip Racing machine that Moffitt has been wheeling throughout the 2011 season.
3:47
According to NASCAR's data, in the K&N Pro Series East's past trips to NHMS....

- There have been 55 stand-alone NKNPS East races at NHMS, more than any other track.
- There have been 24 different race winners, led by Brad Leighton’s eight.
- There have been 28 different pole winners, led by Kelly Moore’s six.

Different series have different regulations for their autograph sessions. Typically the K&N Pro Series east does not require drivers to be in uniform. However most drivers were displaying team or sponsor logos on their polo shirts.

One of the spectators here today, milling around the infield, is Maine racing legend Mike Rowe - who has raced here many times in his career in what is now that NASCAR K&N Pro Series East division. Rowe competed in last week's PASS 300 at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway (a track where he has previously won the track championship) and ran strong, but had a massive engine failure. He told us that he is now looking at his options for the 2012 racing season, but would love to return to the PASS North ranks full-time to challenge current kingpins Johnny Clark and Ben Rowe (Mike's son).

today's schedule?

1:13
Several drivers who came up through the Northeastern short track ranks are running Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race here at New Hampshire. In the first practice for that race, Former East Series regulars Martin Truex, Jr. and Joey Logano were 16th and 21st on the speed charts respectively. Former Modified Tour standout Steve Park ranked 44th in Cup practice. Park recently returned to his roots by running a NASCAR Modified at Thompson International Speedway (CT). He finished fifth in the recent NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour event there.

There is a mathematical possibility that Max Gresham could clinch his first NASCAR K&N Pro Series East championship this week at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. If Gresham wins, he would eliminate Brett Moffitt if Moffitt finishes 35th or worse in the 36-car field, Darrell Wallace Jr. if Wallace finishes 23rd or worse and Matt DiBenedetto if DiBenedetto finishes 13th or worse. Other elimination scenarios come into play depending on which driver leads the most laps.

We of course will be here all weekend with coverage of all the action from the East Series, to the Modifeds and the ACT Late Models. We'll have the East race on radio on NASCARHomeTracks.com and the ACT race will be on Speed51.com. The Modifed race will be live on SPEED, but we will have live updates.

The top three qualifiers after time trials visit the media center afterwards for interviews. Ryan Newman has won three poles in NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour competition here at NHMS in his career, but qualified fourth. Newman hopes to be back in the media center tomorrow though – as one of the podium finishers in the New Hampshire 100 WMT race. Newman referenced this fact as he sat down for a Friday morning press conference as part of his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series duties.

“I missed my trip in here yesterday after Modified qualifying, but I hope to be back in here again,” laughed Newman.

The weather is the big story in the paddock area today. It is gray and cloudy right now over New Hampshire Motor Speedway. It rained hard last night - hard enough to temporarily flood the infield access tunnel in fact. But things dried out this morning and NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series practice has been taking place as scheduled.

It is almost certain though that it is going to rain later. How much later? We just don’t know. The NASCAR K&N Pro Series East event is scheduled to start at 5pm and some forecasts call for the rain to come in after the dinnertime hour, so the race could be fine. It could also be a race to halfway if it starts to rain earlier. If the rain hurries in though, there could be even more issues – since NHMS does not have lights, a delayed start of more than a few minutes could wash out any East Series racing today. We will keep you posted on all weather developments as the afternoon rolls on.

Corey Williams and his father Dan showed up early for duty today and are seen here waiting for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East garage area to open up.

The ACT Late Model teams were not in action yesterday here at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, most of the teams weren’t even to the track yet. But Joey Pole was – and he got to see some on track action. Pole was tapped to qualify the Fadden Racing #61 entry in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East race by team owner Mike Olsen after its regular driver, Dr. Joe Masessa wanted to make sure that he qualified for the show. Masessa had raced regularly with the East Series in the past, but had taken some time off from racing in recent seasons. Pole time trialed the car in the 22nd position and Masessa will race it later today – after having to drop to the rear due to the driver change.

D.J. Shaw will not be racing in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East event today. The New Hampshire native had a cut tire send him hard into the wall yesterday. The #60 team did not have a back-up car. Shaw isn’t done racing this week though (weather permitting). He is entering Saturday night’s PASS North race at White Mountain Motorsports Park (NH). Shaw finished second to Johnny Clark in the most recent PASS North event there. Shaw is eyeing a full run of the PASS North schedule next season – possibly cutting back his East Series schedule to only the NHMS events.

There is no additional practice for the East Series cars today before their 5pm race.

A few NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour teams have unloaded their cars today. Ken Wooley's Dick Barney-owned #14 team has their Modified up on jackstands. They are working on the rear end of that automobile. Richie Pallai, Jr.'s team was working on the hood of their #39 Modified. Justin Bonsignore's team also has their #51 Modified unloaded and they are working under the hood. Glenn Tyler's #8 Modified was also on the ground, but we didn't see the crew working on the car. Instead, several youngsters visiting the track with the Make-a-Wish Foundation were posing for photos with the car.

The ACT Late Model teams do not have any on-track activity schedule for today either. However, teams are on site to prep their tires for tomorrow’s race. Because of the fact that there are four NASCAR divisions working out of the infield of this one-mile track, the ACT teams and their tire compound has been staged elsewhere on the NHMS property. So we don’t expect to see many of those drivers around these parts this afternoon.

So far, today has been a bit of a lazy day for the NASCAR Touring teams. The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour has no on-track activity scheduled for today. The NASCAR K&N Pro Series East division did not have its garage area open until Noon. Actually, there was a bit of a delay to that as teams were able to line up behind the rear doors of their haulers, but not allowed to open them and get to work until several minutes later.

Good afternoon from New Hampshire Motor Speedway, where the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East, NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour and ACT Late Model Tour are carrying the short track banner on NHMS' fall weekend of NASCAR racing. We'll have coverage throughout the weekend from all three of the short track-based tours right here on Speed51.com. Today's big race is the East Series event scheduled for 5pm.
