Legendary television announcer Ken Squier, a partner in this track, is now sharing a few words with the crowd. He told the fans in the stands to move closer to their neighbors – but for a different reason than normal. Squier said that there probably won’t be a capacity crowd today, but it would be a good idea to huddle close in an effort to stay warm. Although it is clear here at Thunder Road, it is a bit chilly this afternoon. Currently, it is 37 degrees.

Class festivities – which is a tradition of opening day at Thunder Road has been postponed until the running of Memorial Day Classic here next month. The reason is that it is chilly here today and there is still a threat of showers at some point this afternoon, so track officials have opted to move the show along as quickly as possible.

What is Class Day? It is a cool tradition here at Thunder Road where all competitors from all divisions are honored by coming out onto the infield before racing starts for the season. It is always quite a sight to see the grassy infield packed with the new racecars for the season.

Yesterday was scheduled to be an optional practice day here at Thunder Road, but Mother Nature had different plans. The day’s activities were rained out. Today, things are looking better though. There was rain and even snow in the area early this morning, but track officials are committed to getting this event in and that shows as the track is “hot” right now with Late Model practice. It is overcast and chilly, but that is nothing a few layers can’t fix. The races are on for today!
