On skipping the heat, Sellers says that is a relief to skip the heat, mostly because they will have 25 lap fresher tires than the field behind them to start. However, he does regret not being able to see how the track is handling and says he will intently watch the heats from the top of his hauler to see how it goes.
5:48
Sellers started third here last year and will start first on Sunday. He broke in the heat while leading and it almost cost him making the race.

Tech is underway for the fast qualifiers. (Speed51.com photo)
5:46
Peyton Sellers: “Whatever happens, this is a really good shot in the arm for me after bag luck last year. My crew chief Tony Keen is sitting out this race and it’s all proven to be worthwhile. Me and Lee are right there tit-for-tat. That’s how we are most weeks between South Boston and Motor Mile. It just goes to show you the competition level.”

“My adrenaline level is pretty high right now. That was intense”

5:44
They will start 42 tomorrow. Sellers and Pulliam are the only two locked in. From there, they will take 10 from each heat (3 heats) and then 10 from the last chance race.

5:43
Pulliam says he is glad to sit out of the heat. “It’s an awesome feeling. I’ve got to sit before, back when they let twenty sit [an old qualifying format meant the top-20 were locked in]”. It’s a little nerve-wracking only having two spots lock in”

Lee Pulliam says that he could have gotten Peyton had a slower car not held him up.
“That was my money lap.  We ran tied for the pole, passing a guy. So that’s a bit disappointing. But I’m proud of my guys and hats off to Peyton [Sellers]. He’s been fast all weekend. I think the berst two cars are on the front row. We’ve kept our eyes on them and I know they’ve been watching us.”

Remember, most all that matters right now is being one of the two fastest cars in town. Otherwise, you go to your heat races. Without timing and scoring, we will have to wait to provide everyone’s lap times until the end of this session. But we’ll keep you apprised about where everyone is relatively stacking up and for sure who are your fast two at all times. Your fast two as of this second are Sweeney and Lewis.

The unicorn on CE Falk’s car has an interesting story behind it. CE’s fiancé Kaliegh Shidler was given the opportunity to design the car as the driver needed to spend some time apart from her to get this racecar ready. As a tradeoff she got to design the paint scheme and thus the unicorn Princess Sparkles was born.

In addition to the unicorn Falk’s grandmother’s initials are etched in the car number this week after she lost her battle with breast cancer in 2008. The Falk Motorsports team hopes the combination will be a winning one as they chase the Martinsville win and the Virginia State Championship in the Triple Crown. They are using the hastag #UnicornToTheFront this weekend on twitter for good luck.

One of the more surprising names on the entry list is Gary Lewis. The 45-year old Washington driver was a two time champion on the old NASCAR Northwest Series circuit, picking up some 31 victories, second most all-time. He’s also picked up ARCA West and ASA Northwest titles and picked up victories in some Evergreen big money events in recent years as well as the Idaho 200. To the best of our knowledge though this is his first major race here on the East.

Group qualifying is scheduled for 4 p.m. In a format change for this year, the top two qualifiers will automatically advance to the 200-lap feature on Sunday, bypassing the heat-races early on Sunday afternoon.

The first of three 25-lap heat races begin at 12 p.m. Sunday, followed by a 25-lap last chance race. Ten drivers will advance from each of the heat races and from the last-chance race.
