Bethea,  who resides in  Newport, Tennessee, was a regular competitor during the 1970s in the NASCAR Late Model Sportsman (current day Nationwide Series) division, traveling all around the Southeast to race against  drivers “The Ironman” Jack Ingram, Harry Gant,  L.D. Ottinger, Butch Lindley, Gene Glover,  Jimmy Hensley, Bob Pressley,  John A. Utsman, Brad  Teague,  plus many others.

Bethea made history again in 1975,  driving  for car owner D.K. Ulrich in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series World 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway to become one of only seven African-Americans to compete at NASCAR’s highest level, currently known as the Sprint Cup Series.

Volunteer Speedway is located about an hour southwest of Bristol, where the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series is competing this weekend.

Volunteer can be best described as a smaller, but similarly-shaped dirt version of Bristol Motor Speedway.  The 4/10-mile track is banked at 32 degrees in the corners, making it one of the fastest dirt tracks in the country.

Wendell Wallace of Batesville, Ark., is the current Super Late Model track record holder, having toured the track at 12.001-seconds (120.004 mph) on March 6, 1998 – one year before the track was reconfigured in spring of 1999 – making it 40-feet wider on the backstretch exiting turn two.

“The Malabar Missile” Kenny Adams, from Malabar, Fla., set a new track record at 11:805-seconds (121.982 mph) during time trials for the United Sprint Car Series’ “North-South Shootout” on Aug. 18, 2000.
