11:16

The driver’s meeting took place around 10:30 or so this morning.   We will have some information and procedures throughout the day here on the website. One thing that was addressed was the weather.   Precipitation is forecast in various percentages throughout the weekend here at Lanier.   According to Darrel Krentz, the plan is to get all of the action in this weekend.   If that means going to Sunday or even Monday to run the races, they will do that.

11:21

There are around 200 Legends Cars here at Lanier, which will race in four different divisions, based on skill and/or age.Young Lions: Inexperienced drivers that are 12 – 15 years of age.
Semi-Pro: Inexperienced drivers that are 16 and up years of age.
Pro: Experienced drivers 12 years old and up.
Masters: Drivers 40 years and older of any experience level that choose to race in this class. These designations are assigned at the beginning of the year, and a driver doesn’t have to move up to Pro until the next season, regardless of how many wins they might have.

11:26

Yesterday was a day-long practice for all the cars competing here this weekend.   We were told it was a pretty uneventful day, except for a few drivers that had issues when someone oiled down the track and collected a couple cars in the process.   We are hearing that Pro driver Daniel Hemricwrecked his car and had to go back to North Carolina to have the car reclipped.

11:27

LegendsofGA.com was here yesterday (as well as throughout the entire weekend), and has all the practice times from yesterday uploaded here:http://www.legendsofga.com/2009/Lanier/nationals.htm

11:29

Throughout our coverage of the events here at Lanier, you may send in a comment or question.   We will periodically post a question and a response, but we might not be able to post them all or get back to everyone.Feel free to use the Speed51.com Facebook and Discussion Forums to post about the Nationals as well, including wishing drivers good luck.

11:29

Comment From Tracy Hey guys! I just want to thank both LegendsNation.com and Speed51.com in advance for bringing this coverage to those of us who can’t be down there! It makes not being there in person *ALMOST* bearable!

11:29

Comment From David Freeman Thank you to LegendsNation and Speed51 for the coverage.

11:29

Comment From shane will any of the races be televised?

11:30

To our knowledge, none of the races will be televised, but there is a camera crew here.   We think they are part of a reality TV show that is following a few drivers.

11:43

Track drying appears to be complete as they are getting close to qualifying, starting with the Legends Young Lions division.

11:49

Here is how things work for qualifying.   Drivers will get out and get approximately four laps during “European” style qualifying, meaning there will be approximately 10 cars on the track at the same time.   Drivers will receive points for qualifying, which will be 200 for the top driver in qualifying, minus two per position back through the field.Later today, after qualifying has been completed, they will have heat races.   These will be lined up inverted with fast qualifiers starting in the rear.   Points will be received based on the finishing positions of the heat races with 100 points for the winner, 97 for second, 94 for third and on back (based on the normal INEX points schedule for a race). The points from a driver’s qualifying and heat race will be combined to form the starting fields of tomorrow’s races with the top 20 locked into the A Main.   21st – 40th will be in the B Main, 41st – 60th will be in the C Main.

11:50

Young Lions are on the track for the first qualifying session.

11:55

The key for these drivers during this style of qualifying is for a driver to get away from the other cars to get a few solid laps under their belt on the track.   Running up on another car and having to work around them will cause a driver’s time to be slowed down.

12:08

Young Lions qualifying is still occuring.   Three sessions have occured, and so far Chad Finchumhas the fast time with a 15.866 second lap.

12:12

The fourth group of the Young Lions has completed.   Cody Humphreys is overall second fastest with a 15.894 second lap, but he was right behind another driver.   If he would have backed off and sacrificed a lap to get some space, he might be fast qualifier.

12:14

The Young Lions qualifying has been completed.   Scott Hensley, in the final group, turned a 15.688 second lap and is on top of the charts.   We will have a complete listing here shortly.

12:20

Semi-Pro qualifying is on the track now.

There is a ton of speedy-dry on the track from the oil down that they are trying to get cleaned up so the Masters can complete their qualifying session.

1:19

The Masters drivers have completed their qualifying session.   Jeff Haynie set fast time with a 15.799 lap.We will have a full rundown soon.

1:20

We have an interesting situation with Clay Hair.   He was second fastest in qualifying, but according to Darrel Krentz, if his issues with his car force him to a back-up car, he doesn’t get any points for qualifying.   He can change the engine though and not lose points, so we will keep an eye on this situation.

1:21

The Pro drivers are on the track for their qualifying sessions.

1:22

Comment From Nancy B – Houston this is wonderful – keeping up with nephew Z Knowles 51 (semi-pro) – pics would be great too

Comment From Christi Woods Thank you guys for all the updates…….The coverage is awesome as always!!!! Especially when you can’t be there right now.

A multi-car crash in the first Pro heat race has forced the red flag as a few cars were torn up, putting debris on the track.   A battle up towards the front caused the incident.   We will try to get some names of those involved, but the scene is now clear.   We think Nick Pistone and John Freeman were two of the drivers involved.

We are going to take a break from the keys.   We will be back before the start of the Race of Champions events.

6:54

We are back at the keys.   Drivers that are going to race in the Race of Champions events have been introduced to the crowd.   They are currently getting lined up on pit road.

6:55

We are going to work on getting line-ups for the Race of Champions, which will be four races (one per division), 20 laps a piece.

7:04

Comment From GS RACING NORTH POLE AK GOOD LUCK TO ALL THE DRIVERS WISH WAS THERE

7:04

Comment From David Good Job Brian McArdle

7:05

Comment From Bill Close Thanks LegendsNation and Speed51 for the coverage. Keep the info coming!!

7:06

The National Anthem has been sung and we are moments away from the first of four Race of Champions events.   Up first is the Young Lions group.

7:08

These races tonight will be interesting.   Some drivers in these races are using back-up cars to keep their primary cars clean and green for tomorrow’s Nationals events, while others are using their Nationals car, which is risky, considering they could tear up their car tonight and be done for the weekend.

7:10

Comment From Britt The updates have been awsome today…..but if there was anyway you could add a race video it would be 1st class…….Thanks

7:11

Unfortunately race video coverage on our end isn’t available this year, but stay tuned to Speed 51 over the next few months as we bring more video clips and coverage from events across the country.

7:12

The Young Lions drivers are on the track.   There are 16 racers that are ready to race tonight in this division’s Race of Champions.   We do not have time to transcribe out the line-up, but Cody Humpfreys and Harrison Rhodes are on the front row.

7:13

GREEN FLAG

7:13

Harrison Rhodes has taken the early lead as they complete lap one.

7:15

Cody Humpfreys is stalking Harrison Rhodes for the lead.   Meanwhile, Blake Jones has moved up from his sixth-place starting position to the third position.   Eight laps are complete.

7:16

Austin Leitner has worked his way into third around Blake Jones.

7:17

15 laps are down, so there are five laps to go.   Harrison Rhodes still leads Cody Humpfreys, Austin Leitner and Blake Jones.

7:19

CHECKERED FLAGHarrison Rhodes has won the Young Lions Race of Champions.   Cody Humpfreys was second, followed by Austin Leitner.

We will attempt to get the full results by the end of the night, but stay tuned as we will have reaction from all four winners tonight at the end of our race coverage.

7:27

The Semi-Pro drivers are lining up on the track.   There are 15 Semi-Pro racers in this race.   Starting on the front row will be Kenzie Ruston and Zach Knowles.

7:29

GREEN FLAG

7:30

Kenzie Ruston got the early jump with Dennis Kiser moving in to second on the first lap.

7:31

Five laps are complete.   Kenzie Ruston and Dennis Kiser have pulled out to a lead over the rest of the pack.   Zach Knowles is still third on the track.

7:33

YELLOW FLAG: LAP 10A single car spin occured in turn four, bringing out the yellow, but everyone was ok and we are good to go back to green quickly.

7:34

Kenzie Ruston still leads Dennis Kiser up front.

7:34

 GREEN FLAG

7:35

Kenzie Ruston still leads with Dennis Kiser second after the restart.   We are unsure of a few driver’s names in the rest of the top five.

7:36

The third place car (#21 – we are unsure of who is in it) has spun on the backstretch, then Dennis Kiser went high in turn one, but no yellow came out.   Kenzie Ruston now has a huge lead with two laps to go over Jeff Bolen.

7:38

CHECKERED FLAGKenzie Ruston is the winner of the Semi-Pro Race of Champions.   Jeff Bolen finished second with Zach Knowles in third. We will have a full-field rundown and race winner reaction at the end of the night.

7:43

The Masters drivers are on the track.   There are 11 Masters on the track.   Bob Kronenberg and Randy Gunton are on the front row.

7:43

GREEN FLAG

7:44

Bob Kronenberg is currently leading.   Meanwhile Clay Hair, who started the race about a half lap down, is riding in last.   It looks like he is using this race as a practice session and wanted to get away from everyone.

7:46

YELLOW FLAG: LAP 6Bob Bass went for a spin in turn four.

7:46

Bob Kronenberg still leads Randy Gunton up front.

7:47

 GREEN FLAG

7:48

Bob Kronenberg held the lead on the restart and still leads, but the driver on the move is Hoyt Demis, who has moved from ninth to second by lap 10.

7:49

Five laps remain.   Bob Kronenberg’s mirror is now filled with Hoyt Demis, who is just a few carlengths back.

7:53

CHECKERED FLAGBob Kronenberg has won the Masters division Race of Champions in dramatic style.During the last two laps, Hoyt Demis was all over the back of Kronenberg and was under him a few times down the front stretch, but Kronenberg would take his line away from him each time.   Demis did get along side of him going down the backstretch and into turn three, but Kronenberg hung it out and was able to beat Demis back to the line to take the win.   Kevin Foisy was third.

7:56

Up next is the Pro division Race of Champions.   Ronnie Freeland and Dylan Ames are starting on the front row of the 13-car field.

7:58

 GREEN FLAG

7:58

Dylan Ames is leading Daniel Hemric after lap one as a scramble at the start had Will Prance tagging the wall, but everyone continued on.

8:00

Five laps are complete.   Up front Dylan Ames still leads Daniel Hemric by  a car length.   Currie Pierce is third.

8:01

At lap 10, Dylan Ames was leading, but he was passed in turn one by Daniel Hemric.

8:01

Daniel Hemric isn’t getting away from Dylan Ames as now the top four drivers are all nose to tail.

8:02

Coming to five laps to go, Dylan AMes dove into the lead in three, but Hemric drove by in four.   They are battling side by side for the lead.

8:03

Dylan Ames is back our from at lap 17.

8:03

The top six cars are nose to tail with two laps to go.

8:04

CHECKERED FLAGDylan Ames in the Pro division Race of Champions winner.Over the final five laps, Ames and Daniel Hemric swapped the lead multiple times, but Ames got out front for the final time, taking the win.

8:04

The Roadsters are next.

8:05
