Comment From VMS Motorsports Is it still raining, or did it all pass through overnight?

10:20

At the moment, it isn’t raining.   About 15 minutes from the track this morning it was misting, but currently it is clearing up and it is getting a bit brighter outside.

10:24

We say the original schedule as there has been some adjustments.   Practice was supposed to be on the track currently, but that has been pushed back to around noon.   Because of the weather, the track conditions haven’t been the best, so they are giving the track a few hours to hopefully get in better condition so the racing action will be able to take place today.

10:34

Yesterday, qualifying took place along with heat races.   Using a points system, the qualifying and heat race points were combined together to form the Main line-ups.   We will have the results of that momentarily.

10:36

We have had a few questions on car counts.   As far as what we have listed in the line-ups for the A Mains (there will not be any B Mains), the totals are below.   Note, there are a few drivers that either wrecked yesterday or have chosen to not show up to race today.Young Lions – 12 Cars
Semi-Pro – 19 Cars
Pro – 19 Cars
Masters – 16 Cars

10:40

One driver that was here yesterday and will not be here today is Chad Finchum.   While on the track yesterday, Finchum hit a rut and shot his car to the wall.   We spoke to his father this morning that told us he has a cracked rib from the incident.   We wish Chad the best on his road to recovery.

10:43

Alex Kempf was another driver that took a wild ride yesterday.   According to a few in the pits,   Harrison Rhodes lost a drive shaft and everyone went scrambling.   Kempf’s car  ended up going up in the air, end over end, before coming back down and stopping. While his car was destroyed, the driver was just fine, and even raced in the Race of Champions later in the day in a back-up car.   We hear he is back here today to race in the Nationals event.

10:46

10:46

PHOTO: Alex Kempf’s car under the tarp after wrecking hard yesterday (the tarp was just to keep rain off the car since it had been misting overnight, not for any safety or “hiding” issue).   (51 Sports Photo)

10:58

One driver that we are disappointed to hear is not here for the racing action this weekend is Semi-Pro racer Kara Clarke.   Clarke works over at Lowe’s Motor Speedway (NC), and skipped the Summer Shootout Series since she had to work there.   Over this season, on the weekends, Clarke was always racing dirt – either at East Lincoln Speedway or Carolina Speedway. We confirmed with Clarke that she was not able to get off work to race in the Dirt Nationals today since the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series is in town.   While we do understand business, we are a bit confused as to why LMS wouldn’t allow her off work to race in the biggest event of the year for her.

11:00

After the qualifying and heat races, last night the Race of Champions events took place.   Those races are for the drivers that won their state dirt championships throughout the 2009 racing season. The winners of the Race of Champions Events:

Young Lions: Robert Poole

Semi-Pro: Lucas Montgomery

Pro: Dylan Harris

Masters: Randy Kissinger

11:07

An announcement has been made that practice will now be around 1:00pm.

12:06

Track preparations are still occurring here at East Lincoln.   We are not sure if they will make the 1:00pm time frame for practice though. The adjusted schedule had practice starting at 1pm with the driver’s meeting to follow at approximately 2:00pm, then the four feature races to follow.   We will keep you posted on what is happening here at East Lincoln.

12:22

We are going to head down to the pits and take some photos as well as seeing how things are going.   We might stay down on the track if practice kicks off soon, but we will be back well before the features start.

1:41

We are back at the keys.   Practice has not started yet as they are still trying to work in the track. The driver’s meeting will be at 2pm, and hopefully after that the practice will start.

1:55

The driver’s meeting is close to starting, so we are heading pitside to see what is said.We will be back shortly.

2:41

The driver’s meeting has completed.   Everything during the meeting was pretty standard.Inbetween a few of the races, they might rework the track a bit if it gets a bit messy.

2:42

We are going to step back away from the PC for a few moments to take some photos during practice, which is starting right now.   The practice should last for about an hour.We are looking at a 4pm start time for the features at this point.

3:05

The practice “hot laps” have been completed.   The Young Lions drivers are lining up on the track for the opening ceremonies.

3:06

We have had a driver change at the track.   Harrison Rhodes is not here, so Daniel Hemric will race the #36 machine in the Pro race.

Comment From Tracy Is today the first time Hemric has been in the car, or has he raced it before?

3:16

From what we understand, this is Hemric’s first time on dirt today.

3:22

We are going to do our best to post coverage of the races as they happen.   Unfortunately we do not have a decent spot to see the track from where we had to set the laptop at, so we will be running back and forth during the race to post updates.

3:24

The National Anthem has been sung and the engines have been fired.   We are a few moments from the green.

3:29

Brandon Schmitt has worked his way now to second with Justin Grimes third.   Robert Poole is back to fourth.

3:31

YELLOW FLAGWe think it was Tyler Lester going for a loop in turn two.

3:32

Up front, Donald McIntosh still leads.

3:32

 GREEN FLAG

3:33

We are halfway in the Young Lions Nationals 30-lap event.   Donald McIntosh leads Brandon Schmitt, Justin Grimes, Robert Poole and Jesse Little.

3:35

There are 17 laps complete.

3:35

 GREEN FLAG

3:37

On the restart, Justin Grimes got in the back of Donald McIntosh going into one as it appeared McIntosh was a bit slow entering the corner.   Grimes went up in the air a bit, but set back down and continued, but lost a few spots.

3:37

YELLOW FLAGCarson Gramm has hit the wall on the front stretch, bringing out the yellow.

3:39

Big trouble for the leader.   Donald McIntosh has a bumper off, so during this yellow, he has to come in and get it fixed.   Robert Poole also had to go to the pits for a bumper infraction.

3:40

Brandon Schmitt is now the leader, followed by Justin Grimes and Jesse Little.

3:40

 GREEN FLAG

3:41

Brandon Schmittt still leads up front.   We also understand that Chandler LeVan came off the track during that yellow.

3:42

Justin Grimes is all over the leader’s back bumper, hitting him through the corner.

3:42

YELLOW FLAGSean Shalvoy has flipped over on his lid in turn two.

3:43

GREEN FLAG

3:49

Donald McIntosh has made the power move to the outside, using the cushion to drive from fourth to first and lead the first lap after the restart.

3:51

YELLOW FLAGOne corner after driving from fourth to the lead, Donald McIntosh lost control of his car in turn one, hitting the wall, taking himself out of the race.   McIntosh was racing while feeling under the weather.   Back home, his sister has the H1N1 Swine Flu, so the family is hoping he isn’t getting it as well.   A win would have made him feel better, but unfortunately it isn’t his day.

3:52

Brandon Schmitt leads Justin Grimes and Jesse Little.

3:52

Seven laps to go.

3:52

GREEN FLAG

3:53

Justin Grimes took a page out of Donald McIntosh’s book, going to the high side to take the lead.

3:54

YELLOW FLAGRobert Poole has hit the wall slightly in turn two.   A lap earlier in turn four, he hit a rut pretty hard and went up in the air.   It is possible something broke when he did that as the next corner he went to the wall.

3:55

Top three; Justin Grimes, Brandon Schmitt, Jesse Little

3:56

Of note, Chad Little, father of Jesse Little, is here to watch his son race.   The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour finale that was scheduled for this weekend was rained out, allowing Chad Little, who runs the WMT, to watch his son race on dirt for the first time.

3:57

Tyler Lester is also off track.   We aren’t sure when he went off the track, but it has been a bit.

3:58

There are four laps remaining.

3:58

GREEN FLAG

3:58

We do see Lester on the track.   He is running sixth.   We apologize for the mis-information.

3:59

Justin Grimes still leads.

4:00

Brandon Schmitt went to the high side to pass Justin Grimes.   Grimes tried to block and contact was made, but Schmitt got by.

4:00

White flag.

4:00

CHECKERED FLAGAll the way from Wisconsin, the Young Lions Dirt Nationals winner is Brandon Schmitt.

4:01

We will be back at the keys in a moment.   We are heading down to take photos. At the end of the coverage, we will have quotes from the winners of all races and photos, and hopefully complete results.

4:18

4:41

RED FLAGDue to the angle of Mike Mueller’s car on the front stretch, the red flag is out so the wrecker can pick up his car.

2009 INEX Legends Semi-Pro Dirt Nationals Winner – Jason Rayle“I was just hanging on, trying to get my vision straight from bouncing around.   The track was fast, but you never knew where those ruts were.   We worked really hard.   The #15 (Lucas Montgomery) was fast.   I knew I was going to get him.   I just had to wait for the right time.   There was a very small area through there, but I found it.”

2009 INEX Legends Masters Dirt Nationals Winner – Randy Kissinger“We set fast time and went out and won the heat race, then came in and the wires burned up on the alternator and they DQed me for that.   I understand that is how it is and I had to start last, and that was ok.   We had 30 laps.

“The track was vicious, no doubt about it.   We came up on the lapped cars and it was crowded.   We hung on and got it.”
